Your Turn Programme
In May 2011, 6 of Chaucer’s Y9 students took part in a 3 day programme with students from 5 schools across Sheffield called ‘Your Turn’. The programme is led by Common Purpose, an organisation dedicated to helping different people from across a town or city meet, work together and consider how to make their voices heard. The group worked in city centre venues including the Electric Works on the Digital campus near the station - where they utilised the helter skelter that is a feature of the building, providing a quick route from top floor to ground level!
Programme activities were very varied and included working with NatWest Bank, Greentop Community Circus and Yorkshire Police. The students were encouraged to develop their communication skills alongside their understanding of civic issues and all of them felt that their confidence in voicing their opinions had increased significantly. We were delighted (but not surprised) to receive exceptionally positive feedback about their involvement and participation from the leaders of the programme. They were an absolute credit to the school so well done to Alexandra Holmes, Daniel Fowler, Samantha Farnsworth, Chloe Leggitt, Ross Kay and Kimberley West.
