So close!
It might just be me, but I love it when I get back from running errands and realise that I didn't have to tell anyone along the way when my baby is due. I guess I just find it awkward, because everyone expects me to be further along than I actually am, and so I feel embarrassed telling the truth. Plus, the looks of genuine shock and disbelief make me feel like a freak.Â
Anyway, yesterday was so close to being a good day. The girls and I went out to the post office, the bank, the library, and the supermarket, and although I conversed with many different people over the course of the morning, not one person asked me the dreaded How Much Longer question. Bliss!
However, we decided to take a family trip to the mall after my husband finished work (he needed business attire for his new job, I wanted some 5-W tablets, and it seemed like a good excuse to have dinner at the food court), and wouldn't you know it, I had to tell three different strangers that I still have six or seven weeks to go. Ugh! Two of the three enquirers were women, and they were very polite about the whole thing; one was a man and he was a total douche. I asked him where the 5-W was. "Oh ho ho ho," he chuckled, "it certainly looks like you need it, ho ho." Dick. "Ha ha," I responded drily. He showed me the tablets, and I told him I'd take them. We went to the counter, and he paused to look at me critically. "So, it is just 5-W to go is it? Ha ha." No it's not, you fucking jerk, I still have seven weeks to go, I'm just buying the 5-W now because it's a convenient time for me, so give me my goddamn purchase so I can get the hell out of here. "Uh, yeah, sure. Something like that." "Oh yes, ho ho ho, not long to go at all. Good luck with that, ha ha." God! Could he possibly have been any more annoying, condescending, or just generally jerk-waddish? My pregnancy is not a goddamn joke, and it certainly doesn't give anyone, let alone a man, permission to look me up and down and judge me on my physical appearance.Â
Honestly, when it comes to pregnancy men just need to shut the hell up. Forever.Â
