âhalf his ageâ by jenn/ette mcc/urdy:
far too polarizing for what it is (why? the average american reader is weird about sex scenes, particularly sex scenes like the ones in this book)
which is to say the book relies on a supposedly shocking premise that is in actuality pretty tired, although it was obviously inspired by the authorâs personal experiences and was no doubt cathartic for her to write.
the POV character makes observations that are by turns interesting and redundant. itâs difficult to write a believable teenage character (especially one who happens to be a girl) that adult readers donât call âpretentiousâ or âunrealisticâ if not just âannoyingâ so make of that what you will.
I wanted more from the setting since it was specifically named (anchorage, alaska) but it had so little to do with the characterizations of these lonely people.
at one point the POV character is having a conversation with her older man (who was originally her creative writing teacher) where he confidently comments that f. scott fitzgeraldâs writing style is âtoo floweryâ for her, and she automatically agrees, thinking that she likes simple writing that âgets to the point.â which is like. mildly charming as metatext, but it also kicked up one of my primary criticisms of mc/curdyâs writing here, which is thatâŚ
the metaphors in this book - especially the ones that concluded the chapters - were too simple. the clockwork orange poster metaphor near the end, for example, was brought up an unnecessary number of times, and there wasnât much to it to begin with. this was emphasized for me via the audiobook narration by the author herself, which I found so rushed that I played the whole book at a slower speed for better retention, and even that couldnât give me the substantive pauses at the end of a chapter/section that I usually want, because the writing itself wasnât quite there.
I appreciated the attention to bodily fluids and unpleasant scents etc etc. âgross parts,â to quote our main character waldo. lots of us want to do Gross But Not Too Gross, which isnât what this book was doing. the problem is whenever a writer leans in this direction I always think they can stand to make it worse đ myself included.
will i ever get tired of horikoshi making bakugou look impulsive for 0.2 seconds before reminding us heâs actually a strategist just as much as midoriya is? absolutely not!!
but for real bakugou snatching the civilianâs wallets from the villains before he proceeded to blow them up is the perfect example of expectation of who this kid is vs who he actually is. from the way he physically rushes into the fight to the mockery against the villains weâve got everything to believe at first glance that heâs just attacking mindlessly when in reality heâs evaluating the situation and making quick decisions for the best outcomeÂ

HECK YESOk, so at this point, to be completely honest, I had no idea what this research was going to be other than âfind stuff out about vampires to make Viktor suspicious,â BUT NOW I can answer it with an actually good answer.Â
(adding a cut because this is going to be long, and after this point, major spoilers for my vampire/modern fantasy YOI au A Heart Beats at Night)
