Angst Starter for @commandersmoothdogâ
Visibility was almost zero. Tony could only see a couple of feet in front of the car as he made his way home from work, driving as slowly as he could without pissing off the other drivers. It reminded him too much of another time, another storm, another life.
Visibility was almost zero. From his place in the front seat, Tony could barely see a thing. Mum was driving slow, but that was no guarantee, not with how icy the roads were.
Frank Sinatra crooned through the speakers, but Tony ignored the music, it was mostly habit that had him putting it on anyways. He hated driving in a quiet car, hated the way it felt oppressive, like a prison. Gibbsâ car had always been quiet, no music to be heard. Tony refused to drive like that in his own car.
Mum was talking about the movie, asking Tony his opinions on the actors in her rich British accent, that voice that he loved to hear when it was aimed at him, the way she curled the words. His own accent was thick with Italian, but it was sounding more and more like mumâs each day.
There was a bridge up ahead, one that Tony crossed every day without problem. Still, his hands tightened on the wheel as he knew it was drawing nearer, the memories creeping in on him.
There was a bridge up ahead. Mum didnât see it before she hit the patch of ice. She lost control of the car, and they went spinning, out of control, hitting the railing, over the side, into the river.
There was another car in his lane, headlights coming towards him. At the last second, Tony swerved, hit the railing, went over the side of the bridge. It was just like that accident, all those years ago, only this time it was Tony behind the wheel, his life flashing before his eyes, and all he could focus on was the thought that he was going to die the same way his mum had.
The car hit the water and he was stuck in his seatbelt, unable to move, unable to get out of the seat. Pain on his right side filled him, but he was too busy trying to fight, trying to get out of his seat, trying to get out of the car.
âMum, mummy we have to get out of the car! Water is coming in! Mummy! We have to get out of the car! Mummy!â
The last thought he had before everything went dark was that this was going to kill Steve.
âCommander McGarrett?â The voice on the phone wasnât one that would be familiar to Steve, for all that they were all familiar with the majority of the hospital staff. âThis is Leilani Kahale with Queenâs Medical Center. Thereâs been an accident.â
In the hospital room behind her, Tony was hopeless to do anything, to say anything to stop her from worrying Steve. He was laying in a bed, his right lung punctured by a broken rib- the same rib heâd broken in that accident- and he could barely move without wanting to scream in pain. The most heâd managed to get out of the nurse was a promise that sheâd call Steve from his room, so he could hear what she said to his boyfriend.
âIâm afraid Anthony DiNozzo has been hurt,â she continued, her voice steady and calm. âWe have him here in a private room, but he insisted that you be called. If you want to come down to Queenâs, heâs in the ICU, room 458.â
