Good question I don’t even know. 

I’m not sure there’s a verse where they would stay in a purely mutually beneficial relationship and never become friends but I suppose in any verse that she was still with Alistair and Nathaniel became some sort of royal adviser against his will? Idk I think he’d have to bear an enormous grudge against her and vice versa for them to never become more than civil to each other.

She’s basically a wild cat. She’ll live in your house and interact with you, but it’s wholly on her terms and by her rules, not yours. She can respect and be loyal and love tremendously deeply, and she will adapt, but she will never truly change.

(( GOD do you even know, nonny, how much I want to write more with Inara? Do you? Because–god, the convoluted, twisted, painful path they would BOTH have to walk for them to ever–we’ve talked about it a bit over messages and stuff and it’s such a fragile concept to begin with that it becomes hard to see how it could actually work, but I am so invested in finding a way, even if the end result isn’t necessarily pretty and neat and tied up in a bow, you know? And Merc is so talented with her characters, and Inara is such an undeniably well-rounded, strong character, that I just–I want it, okay, I want it all.Revka, though–honestly, that’s not something I’d ever thought about? I don’t know if their relationship would ever progress beyond a terse, if respectful, friendship. Alistair has a lot of growing to do if he is ever going to even register on her radar, I’d think, and just as much–if not more–to think of her in any way other than as a comrade and friend. HOWEVER. As a platonic ship? HELL YES. I love surrounding Alistair with people who can teach him to reach his full potential and I feel like Revka and he being friends would lead to a lot of interesting changes and development in his character, and I’d love to see that all play out! ))

“That’s… a rather complicated request.” Nathaniel strokes a thumb over the handle of the hair brush, trying to decide how exactly he wants to proceed. It wasn’t the first time he’d done a woman’s hair - Delilah had been rather adamant that he learn to impress a wife that was no longer in his future - but it was the first time he’d been asked this way. Squinting, he couldn’t help but search for a little more clarity. “I don’t suppose ‘casually nice’ looks like a more popular style?”
