Undisclosed location, New York
âCommander,â Alexander Pierce smiled at him on the screen. âLooks like you had a rough evening.â
The World Security Council Secretary sat there in his pressed black suit, in the tranquility of his huge modern office. The manâs hands were on the desk before him, fingers laced.
He could sense the older gentlemanâs tension from the other side of the screen. It was obvious in the slight elevation of his shoulders, the white of his knuckles.
âIt didnât go as smoothly as weâd hoped,â he told him, not caring how rough he looked at the moment. Pierce isnât out here busting his ass for Hydraâs agenda. âBut we have a solid lead.â
Pierceâs blue eyes widened behind his glasses. âOn Lokiâs scepter?â
Do you fucking doubt me?
He nodded.
âWe need that scepter,â Pierce told him for the tenth fucking time. âWe need the Mind Stone.â
And he understood that. He didnât need the constant reminders. He wasnât the fucking Asset after all.
âWhen will you continue?â Pierce pressed.
âIn two days.â He didnât feel the need to offer more of an explanation. âIâll keep you updated.â
Pierce didnât like his brevity. He knew that. His superior in Hydra also had little patience with his methods.
In the days since the Battle of New York, the world was on edge after witnessing its first alien attack. The Avengers along with the whole of New York City was left weak and reeling. And he began his work for the Secret Empire. He relished his new role in the hidden Hydra network that most of America was blissfully unaware of.
Soon, people would be aware of him. His actions, his new authority.
They would fear him.
And it was their fear, their dread and awe, that he wanted.
âIs there anything else?â he asked Pierce, anxious for a shower.
Anxious for something. While he did have a solid lead on the Mind Stone, the lack of it left him feeling restless inside. Heâd been on a wild goose chase for the damn stone for days now.
Frustration was poison running through his veins and it set his nerves on edge. It kept him from sleeping, prevented him from escaping into simple distractions that were readily available in this modern day.
The older man smirked. âRumlow and his men caught a group of SHIELD operatives near one of our holdings. Iâd like to tell you that they were there because they were sharp, brilliant.â He chuckled. âBut they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.â
âMeaning?â
âYou should go see if you have a use for any of them before theyâre terminated,â Pierce said with a wink. âHalf of them are healthy young women. Theyâll keep one or two for the Asset. Outside of that, take what you want.â
That had him smiling. Perfect.
âThank you,â he said. He refused to address Pierce as sir even though he knew it was expected. Even though he knew it irritated the man.
But what was Pierce going to do about it?
âGo get a shower,â Pierce finally said. âYouâve got blood in your hair.â
He did.
âTalk to you tomorrow, Steve,â Pierce muttered before ending the video call.
Blowing out an exhale, Steve Rogers rose from the chair in Rumlowâs office and stretched. He could just make out the rusty splatter of blood on the flat black of his uniform sleeves. In no particularly hurry, he headed for the locker rooms to get that shower.
After that, Steve would go check out the hostage situation.
Take what you want.
A piece of ass sounded good after the shitty day heâd had.
