Bechdel's: Fun Home
This story by Alison bechdel, is very interesting. It's about her growing up or being raised by her father, they would do many things together (as said in chapter 1), reading this comic I noticed that it is being narrated by a third-party (not the characters themselves), instead of the narration being inside of the panel's they are on top. And I also noticed that there's color but not in realistic variations, just in blue.. white.. greys for shadows and black.
For this post, I just want to elaborate on chapter 1. To me chapter one was very relatable, especially when she stated her friends thought she was rich or wealthy due to her living in a big house, With people saying so, it didn't change how she thought of herself and her family. She knew she was fortunate but never thought or wanted to take that mindset of her possibly being above everyone else. I know I've been through that, where my friends who see the things I had and saw the house I lived in, they will call me "Rich Girl", I could have taken the idea and believed I was because my friends say so; but I knew I wasn't what they described me as. In this chapter, she also described her father and how he was and from her description he was a jack-of-all-trades, he was able to paint, to "turn trash into gold" as she put it and he was really good with his hands . He was a playful father and also a businessman all at the same time but was always able to get the work done.
-How do you think he was able to juggle his work, his extra curricular activities and being a father all at the same time? Could he secretly be Superman?
- Can you find the story, no matter what chapter or if you read the whole comic, relatable to yourself and the way you grew up?
- Did you ever experience the Curiosity of maybe others were right about you and your life?
- What other messages or other details have you noticed by reading the first chapter?
