Comic Sense: July 22nd Edition
Hooray comics! Iām really excited about Power Up, Book of Death, and Wolf. Get reading!
Power Up #1
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Writer: Kate Leth
Artist/Cover Artist: Matt Cummings
Price: $3.99
This is an exciting first issue! I love Amieās character and I feel for her as she struggles to be a good employee while also just trying to be a functioning human being. We only got a little glimpse of the other characters, but I think that this is going to be a fun crew to follow. I mean, what could be better than a goldfish that turns into a whale? The creepy villain guy is properly creepy in a very dignified evil way. The art is fun and expressive and I already canāt wait to see where this story goes.
Comic Sense: July 8th Edition
Wow, what an exciting week!! Weāre just coming off of a bunch of big Marvel, Image, and Valiant announcements and moving into San Diego Comic Con week! All of this excitement, PLUS a bunch of great comics to read! Woohoo!
Archie #1
Publisher: Archie Comic Publications
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist/Cover Artist: Fiona Staples
Price: $3.99
Well this was just super great!! I grew up reading Archie and Iāve been constantly impressed by Fiona Staplesā art in Saga, so the combination of the two was absolutely fantastic! It was neat to see a more modernized Archie before he even meets Veronica. However, I think I might have a crush on Jughead now, which is a sentence I never thought Iād say in my entire life. While Riverdale looks different, the characters are still the good olā Riverdale crew who make the struggles of high school seem both relatable and manageable. This is a first issue that Iāve been looking forward to for awhile and Iām very happy to say that I was impressed. Plus, dang, that Jugheadās jawline and moody smolder.
Comic Sense: February 25th Edition
I almost forgot to write an intro for this because Iām just so excited to tell you about whatās coming out tomorrow!! Whether thatās a result of the comics themselves or the caffeine I consumed this morning, weāll never know! (Jk, itās the comics. Theyāre seriously great this week.) So with no further ado, hereās what you should pick up tomorrow!
Comic Sense: January 28th Edition
I realized last night while I was trying to fall asleep that being a comic book fan is like having a major holiday every single week. Wednesdays = presents, so who needs birthdays or anniversaries or any of that jibber jabber anymore. (Weāll just ignore the fact that you have to pay for your own Wednesday presents because treat yo self, amiright?) And let me tell you, this week is no exception! There are some fantastic comics coming out this Wednesday. Be excited. Be very excited.

Comic Sense: Inaugural Edition
On a weekly basis comic enthusiasts face a dilemma: which series are worth buying fresh off the shelves and which are better left to collect dust in long boxes. With a plethora of new comics coming out weekly from every publisher, going to a comic store can be a daunting task. But hopefully, I can help with that! If you choose to trust my opinions (which you should), Iāll guide you through some of the issues hitting the shelves each week so youāre ready when Wednesday rolls around.
New Age "Comedians" by: Daniel "Da Kernull" Sanders
Comedy, just like everything else in this world, is constantly evolving. Nowadays is seems as though traditional comedy is being replaced with 15-seconds-or-less video clips via Instagram and Vine. These so-called comedians do not perform stand-up, or create full skits that are 3 minutes or longer. While some of these snippets are funny, the majority are not. These āSnippersā ā as I call them ā are not full-fledged comedians. Sporting a wig while speaking and acting like a woman does not make you a comedian, but rather someone who wants their five seconds of fame. Humans have short attention spans; therefore, I fully understand why these snippets are so popular. However, in the monkey-see-monkey-do world known as social media, this trend may have run its course. Iāve personally witnessed via social media, specifically Instagram, a Snipper have over 50k followers with 3k likes on a video clip. Now, Da Kernull is no math major, but that seems like poor odds. I understand that not all people who follow a Snipper may not see every post, but cāmon mayne! Social media has become a platform where someone can say theyāre somebody and people will take their word for it without question. Prior to the social media craze, one really had to prove themselves to generate a true following by word of mouth. If your bread is being buttered by being a social media Snipper, then please ignore this column, but last time I checked likes did not equal paychecks. If you really have talent than get on stage and make total strangers laugh while they are 20 feet away and not 20 million miles away via an IP address. I have seen children blow up via these snippets, but have you seen any children blow up via standup? Itās not fair to comedians who are passionate about their craft and have the courage it takes to step from behind an iPhone or Droid and step on stage. THERE IS NO COMPARISON! Will these Snippers be here for good? Or is it just another social fad? Only time will tell⦠Follow Da Kernull: Youtube.com/Dakernull Twitter.com/Dakernull Facebook.com/Dakernull
