went to the Martha Wells AMA panel today 🎉 I didn’t take notes but I did ask a question and here’s the gist of the response
My question was if she’s enjoyed the process of working on the Murderbot TV series and if she would like to do it again with a different work
(for a previous question, she said that she’s a creative consultant and can’t actually write for the series because she’s not part of the screenwriter’s union)
She said that it’s been really fun because people just constantly send you lots of really cool stuff that they’ve made for this thing you wrote—she would get emails daily of concept art etc, and because it’s a visual medium where background details are visible to the audience, they were always asking her questions about the worldbuilding. She said she one time she was out to lunch with friends at the Galleria (Houston mall) and got a phone call from the show, and they were like “this is urgent—how much does murderbot weigh?” or they’d ask about Mensah’s degrees.
Whether she could do it with another work is out of her hands, but she said if given the opportunity, she would love to.
Another question someone else asked that stuck in my mind was in regards to her Stargate and Star Wars tie-in novels, “Is there another IP you would want to write a tie-in for?” and she said Doctor Who would be it (if she had the time) because she’s been a long time fan. She’s only seen the first two episodes of the new season but thinks Ncuti is just fabulous.
