It must have been nearing five o'clock in the morning when you finally heard your boyfriend's heavy footfalls approaching your shared bedroom, rousing you from your very light sleep. The door creaks closed behind him like always and he hisses through his teeth, as if his best attempt at stealth has been scuppered.
This had been the pattern for the past week and a half, a routine you rather despised.
You would lie awake, his side of the bed stone cold next to you, and stare at the ceiling with the shimmering lights of the moon's reflection flashing above. There you would wait for his shadow to obscure the candescent white as he walked around to his side of the bed, disrupting the steady beams.
Yet, every night the hour seemed to get later and later before he showed up.
Tonight was no different, with the familiar sounds of the floorboards whining beneath his weight ringing in the empty space before the mattress dips on your left. With a quiet, lethargic grunt you roll onto your side towards the man, watching in the low light as he pulls his tight fitting compression shirt off over his head, discarding it somewhere on the floor.
You could almost drool at the sight of his toned back muscles highlighted by the slithers of moonlight that invade through the ornate windowsâthe curtains for which he never seems to useâthe subtle glow clinging to every contour. Though, the distinct lack of something was bothersome to the nagging voice at the back of your mind that had been neglected all week.
You're used to seeing evidence of your touch scattered all over him. Little, rouged crescents where your nails bite for leverage on the rounds of his shoulders, or slender, erratic lines that flare down his back. But they're nowhere to be seen, a flower wilted from a lack of careful maintenance.
"Finally joining me, Bruce?" you grumble as he tries to lie down beside you as quietly as he can, slowly reaching out a hand to find your figure.
"Sweetheart? You're awake?" his fatigue heavy timbre fills your ears when he shuffles closer to you, his warmth surrounding you with hands searching to hold your own. You guide one of his calloused hands to cup your face so that he can feel you nod, and the heat that you find in the well of his palm makes you glad you fought off fatigue.
"Mhm, couldn't sleep." your sentence trails off with a hushed hum, a hand dropping to walk your fingers down his scarred abs as you hastily throw a leg over his hip. The leverage helps to roll his body towards yours, trapped by the waft of your daytime perfume drifting past his nostrils. How it hasn't completely faded is beyond him. Suppose that's the consequence of buying you the upscale stuff.
This, as well as the slight asking lilt to your voice, was your way of letting him know what you wanted, or rather, needed from him.
And he clearly gets the memo, eyes widening with a nonplussed shine and jaw stiffening as the realisation hits him hotly. He hums something deep and resonant as his hand finds your waist, drawing small circles over your pyjama shirtâthat was actually one of hisâwith the pad of his thumb.
"Oh, darling." Bruce murmurs in that velvety, magnetic grumble that you'd grown to love many years ago now. His heavy gaze seeks out your eyes, softening when he finds you already watching him, and his returning stare feels so very apologetic.
"Too tired, I'm sorry." he pouts, squeezing your waist to punctuate his candor.
You let out a frustrated, complaining groan and rest your forehead against his, sighing so that your breath fans over his lips. You want him to feel the disappointment, to notice and cling to how the rejection makes you deflate.
"Please, honey?" you practically whine, pulling him impossibly closer with your knee hooked over his hip, bare legs tangled together. "I've been patient haven't I? Or are you going to make me wait another week?" your tone is almost scolding in your playful, yet completely meant grievance, the tug of a frown resting on your lips.
Bruce almost recoils, his thorned brows raised and lips quirking into a smirk at your affront. The hand that had been cupping your face subtly adjusts to hold your jaw, middle finger curled under your chin with thumb and index finger lightly squeezing your cheeks. He angles your head up to hold your gaze, expression twisting stern but not cruel, more amused than anything else.
"Well, I'm sorry, sweetheart." he begins, sonorous voice dropping to a more sultry rumble that sends a commanding shiver down your spine. "I didn't mean to neglect such a pretty thing."
Your heart starts to thunder in your chest, a steady pounding ringing its beat in your eardrums that ever so slightly muffles the way his honeyed words reach you. It's the anticipation, it blooms ardently in your stomach, neglected sparks daring to find hope and ignite.
"But I've been busy, very busy, and you know that. I promise that as soon as this case is over I'll take good care of you." Bruce smiles apologetically, keening forward to kiss your forehead all too sweetly. The sparks die down in a pitiful way, fizzling out with disappointment dulling them into slumber once more. "Is that what you want?"
You can only muster a frayed whine in response, a undignified little noise that carries all of your burning dissatisfaction. Trying to mask it isn't even a thought that's crossed your mind, far too tired and worn down to want to try. Bringing your hand to grasp his wrist he releases his grip from your jaw in favour of going back to your cheek, thumb sweeping soft caresses where it rests.
"But BruceâŚ" your protest begins again, voice a wavering, shy mumble. He huffs a patient laugh and again raises his brows at you, encouraging your words to spill.
"I need you now." your confession is barely above a whisper, and if it weren't for your close proximity he might well have missed it. "Please?"
Though, you didn't particularly have to spell it out. You being awake at this hour is strange as is, the moment you reached for him Bruce had the inkling that he might be met with that sweet, asking tone you take on when affections between you both have been too scarce for a while. It's the unfortunate truth that the case currently vexing him is taking up his every minute, but he's been sleep deprived before, so perhaps he can sacrifice an hour of rest for you.
He hums and seems to stew over it for a moment, running his calloused thumb over your cheek bone in lazy sweeps. His touch makes your skin buzz eagerly.
Maybe if he hadn't turned to you, hadn't reached with such gentle touches, you could've staved off the desire for one more night. But even just looking at him in all his sculpted perfection brings it back in a way that demands to not be ignored.
"Alright, sweetheart." he starts with a click of his tongue. "You're so lovely, 'can't say no. Is something quick okay?"
You can't help the way you light up. You surge towards him in your excitement and steal a swift kiss from his lips, a contagiously cheery smile shining back at him when you pull away. There's a pause as you watch him, hand sliding down his neck, like taking in his offer, taking in him, before you swallow the lump in your throat.
"If it's okay with you, please." you giggle. Your voice goes quiet then, mousey, like the pound of your pulse makes you realise yourself and go suddenly diffident. But he matches your grin and his shoulders rise with a curt, adoring laugh.
"Of course, darling." he beams." No need to get all shy on me now." Bruce bows forward, stealing another quick peck from your lips, though, this time you try to chase for something headier. But he's already moving out of your reach and repositioning himself beside you.
"How about we try something like this?" In making his suggestion he removes his hands from you to sit up straight, his back flat to the ornate headboard. You hum a hushed tell of confusion as he throws the corner of the duvet back, leaving himself open to your view that sweeps him greedily.
Bruce taps his thigh instructively, thick with muscle, bulky like a tree trunk, wrapped with slender scars and pallid stretch marks. You eye him for a long second, drinking in the image of him under the streaming moonlight. His boxer briefs ride high, bunched up in the crease of his leg, leaving nothing to the imagination, everything outlined underneath the thin fabric. You almost lose yourself in your reverie before his cogent, sonorous voice calls out to you.
"Come sit."
Your brows knit with a flash of confusion, propping yourself up on your elbow and staring for another beat more. But blind lust doesn't ask questions, and you're quick to straddle his lap anyway, a knee settling either side of him. You situate yourself in the cradle of his hips in a way that's familiar, near second nature, but he slowly shakes his head at this, stray strands of greying black falling to obscure your view of his eyes.
"Like this, angel." he gently corrects, lifting one of your legs with a deft hand and easily adjusting your seating so that you instead have one knee between his, clothed cunt hovering above one of his built thighs. You bring your hands to take purchase on his shoulders and shudder as his slides up your leg to your hip, guiding you to sit your full weight onto his thigh.
"Now grind." he delivers the command clearly with a tone that's perplexingly soft, large hands squeezing at the softness of you coaxingly. A breath hitches and stalls in your throat, a weak gasp that failed to escape.
"What?" you near whisper, wetting your bottom lip with your tongue as it seemed to dry out as you sit with mouth ajar.
His hum is deep and patient, lithe fingers flexing to adjust his steel grip. "Here, like this."
With all the ease you'd typically expect of him, Bruce begins to drag you back and forth on his leg, a shallow, bucking type of movement that encourages you to roll your hips in a steady rhythm. Your pulse stutters and one of your hands slides down from his collar to his chest, brushing coarse, greying hair, and the chill of his skin makes you shudder.
"You need to get off, yeah? So get off on my thigh, and then when this case is solved I'll have all the time in the world for you." his voice comes so dulcet that it's almost derisive, every word dripping with honeyed promise, the exact kind that makes your whole body flush hotly. Worse is that you know it's all true, not a shred of actual mocking, and the idea of the night you'll spend once the case is over runs rivulets of arousal into your underwear.
With a mindless, positively dazed nod you begin to follow his lead and rock your hips, pressing damp underwear firm against his bulky thigh and earning yourself a satisfied hum from deep in his chest. "There you go, that's it, sweetheart."
The stimulation feels to be barely enough, a light friction that spits hot sparks that can't catch light. With a frayed whine you attempt to press yourself down harder, pulling your pyjama shirt up and holding it between your teeth to keep it out the way.
Bruce huffs a quiet, fond laugh at your newfound sense of urgency, bringing a hand to your ass to fix his grip and help you bear down. Simultaneously, he bends his leg to push his thigh further flush against you, a subtle ministration that makes a whole world of difference. But, despite the improved angle, you still find yourself rocking your hips desperately to chase the static friction.
You grunt with exertion and move your hands from his shoulders to the sinew of his hips, tilting your own more. You can feel his eyes on you, a knowing gaze heavy as steel, but the fervent desire is a force far stronger than any embarrassment that would make you shy away from this.
Your breaths are shaky, curt, and he watches how your legs tense around his own in your frenzied search. He can't resist helping you, capable hands controlling the rocking of your hips, knowing what you need better than you yourself know.
A sharp gasp is sucked in through gritted teeth when it hits. A sharp, molten shock runs a fiery course up your spine, making you arch with the way it bristles outward over your skin. Finally, you've got it right, desperately humping and grazing your clit with every pass, muffling mindless, salacious sounds into the fabric held captured between your teeth.
"There you go." Bruce drawls fond encouragment, running a crusade-roughened hand up your midriff to your chest, groping and teasing a tit in his calloused palm. "See? Good, isn't it?"
You shudder deeply as he tweaks your nipple between finger and thumb, teasing the sensitive, hard bud. But for some lingering, senseless and stubborn reason, you refuse to give him the satisfaction of your sweet moans. You chew on the inside of your cheek to keep yourself quiet, focussing only on maintaining your steady rhythm. Though you can feel your thighs begin to tense with the effort, a coil twisting slowly in your gut that almost seems to sting.
But your bitten tongue leaves him bemused, noticing how you heave your breaths to pace yourself, but in turn suppress your typical, grateful groans. He watches your face, watches your lashes flutter, features twisting with the waves of pleasure that roll over you, but your jaw is tense with the determination to keep it clamped.
"Sweetheart?" he begs to coax you back to him. "'You being shy, or stubborn?" he asks with a huff, leaning in so his breath fans tepid along your jaw. You don't honour him with a response, zoning him out and attempting to chase the flames that lick behind your navel. He hums something sarcasticly sad and begins to pepper doting kisses where his lips hover.
"Please don't ignore me, angel." he urges between kisses. "I want to hear those pretty moans. I've been missing you too, you know." the tone of his voice drops with both a lilt of heartache and hidden mirth, an inflection that would normally compel you to comply, but you can tell he's enjoying this just as much as you are.
After all, where's the fun without a little pushback? One way or another, he'll learn to get his priorities straight.
"Alright." Kisses turn into grazes of teeth, smears of spit, descending down the column of your throat. "I guess I do deserve the cold shoulder at least a little bit, that's what it is, yeah?"
You humour him with a nod, feeling your skin grow dewy with sweat. But the heat of his mouth doesn't stop, it seeps into you, and it's only made worse when his hand leaves your chest to pull the collar of your shirt aside and make way for more of his advances. He dotes on your collarbone, lingering like unsure whether to mark the skin, but him pressing closer and closer to you throws off your rhythm.
You grunt a muffled complaint and raise a hand to push at chest, practically swatting him with the feeble smack you give. Bruce clicks his tongue against his teeth before conceding and sitting back, but with the way his fingertips dig into you, almost claw like, you can feel his dwindling patience.
"Don't distract me." you huff, shirt dropping from between your teeth. "I'mâ I needâ"
He scoffs a laugh and rolls his eyes, grip curling hard enough to bruise.
"You need" he echoes derisively. "What, darling? I thought it was me that you needed."
You can only groan, absorbed by the hot, mind numbing sensation that has you rapidly barrelling towards that which you begged for. With a shake of your head you plant your hands steadfast on his leg directly in front of yourself, dangerously close to the tent in his boxers, to anchor you. Adjusting the seat of your hips to deepen the angle you continue rolling your sullied underwear against the muscle of Bruce's thigh, but the fire starts to flicker, and frustration begins to fester.
"You know," he starts, leaning in close so you can feel the shape of his words on your lips. The heat of his breath is taunting. "I could help you out, if you listen to me."
"Hngâ"
"You're close, yeah? But something's not quite doing it for you, is it?" his fingers flex where they hold you, like unable to resist.
"Bruceâ"
"So work with me on this. Stop biting your tongue and I'll help you get what you need, okay?"
You mewl a defeated 'fine' and drop your head to his shoulder, sweat damp forehead pressed against his musculature. He bows down to kiss you, caring not for the dew on your skin, and mumbles a pleased, "Thank you."
Keeping one hand fixed on your waist he reaches around with the other to unforgivingly grab a handful of your ass. With that bruising grip he guides the fervorous rocking of your body, drawing you across his leg in strong, languid strokes that make the fire roar something ardent.
His name falls from your tongue in broken, stuttering strings as the sensation feels to override all else, your desperation finally rewarded with the head spinning pleasure you sought. The warmth of his hands guiding your body, the strength and demand of his ministrations, the chill of his breath on the shell of you ear, all the little things have you engulfed so effortlessly and wholly.
"That's it, angel. That's better." he coos, dulcet and ever so pleased with every sound he gets from you. You're pliant in his hands, breaths short and heaving, skin hot to the touch. Like this he can feel the frustration you festered, the honesty of your desperation and the plea you made to him. He's determined to be the reason that frustration melts away, he owes that to you, at least.
"Bruceâ" you stammer in a broken moan, nails digging into his skin and threating to break its palid surface. The electric heat dances over your body, jumping between nerve endings, sparking your system with each rough rock of your cunt on his thigh. It's everything you ached for but now as the tension curls torrid and low in your gut, ravelling tighter with each drag, you feel overwhelmed by the promise of climax that makes you shake.
"I know. Go ahead, darling, I've got you." he keeps up his coaxing, pressing a lazy, doting kiss to your temple. His words spur you on, driving you to pour the last of your energy into pushing yourself over the edge. He doesn't slow his assistance, matching your pace, holding you down with a steadfast grip even when your movements start to stutter.
"YesâFuckâ!" you cry out, your thighs locking up and whole body tensing when it finally hits you in a searing, warm wash that feels to drown you in the all encompassing euphoria. You screw your eyes shut with the force of it and moan out something shaky from a sore throat, body jolting forward as the tension snaps and you collapse against Bruce's chest. He slows you to a stop as it rocks through you, whispering little praises into your ear with his hands keeping you stabilised.
"There you go. Good job, sweetheart."
Silence settles in as you catch your breath, Bruce's touch caressing soothingly up and down the length of your back, both quietly draped in the invading moonlight. You can feel his eyes on you, the weight of his adoring gaze, but it takes a drawn out moment for you to muster the strength to open your own. He doesn't mind, if anything he's grateful to be soaking in the image of you like this.
Eventually you sit back up, though with some effort, and throw your arms to wrap around his broad shoulders, forehead pressed to his. You sigh a heavy breath that fans across his lips before giggling something sweet.
"Satisfied?" he murmurs in asking, raising a hand to cup your cheek and keep you close. You nod in his hold and trap his hand underneath your own trembling one.
"Mhm, thank you, honey." you nod gratefully, pressing a quick kiss to his smiling lips.
"You're very welcome, darling. Now how about we get some sleep?"
"Fine, if we have to."

You bounce your foot anxiously on the floor of the kitchen. The rhythm of its tapping is the only noise to fill your ears besides the tick of the clock your gaze is fixed to, though you've begun to zone that out somewhat.
Four in the morning. He should be here already.
A heavy sigh passes your lips, weighted with a nervousness unlike anything you've known before. Your whole body is tense, stomach twisted apprehensively. It's the worst feeling but you can't shake it, won't shake it until he's back in your arms.
Youâre still not used to this.
Then, as if on cue you hear the familiar thud of a person's full body weight landing on the fire escape outside. And, god, it's awful creaking has never sounded so good until now. You whip your head around to follow the sound, your heart racing and pulse running icy.
Before you know it the heavy presence of the batman is back in your kitchen, his broad stature filling the window bay. His cape is a torn, tattered mess, the volume of the fabric dampened by the weight of grime and residual dirt. But still he hides behind it, hands gathered in its far corners to pull it around his body in the usual, cloak-esque way. The same dirt is smeared across the only visible part of his stubbled face.
The sight freezes you for a moment, leaving you glued to the spot. Like this heâs menacing, a bad omen that lurks in the city's shadows to strike fear into those who oppose him. It takes a moment to remember that the message, that the fear, isnât meant for you.
It's him. That's all that matters.
"Oh, Bruce." It leaves your throat as a gasp and you hurry to stand from your chair, knocking it backwards behind you in the process. Its clatter to the floor makes his head jerk up, eyes widening like snapping him out of a trance.
You help him through the window and support his weight as his feet find the floor, watching the cape fall away from his body to reveal the damage to the front of his suit. He's doubled over himself somewhat, bent at the waist with an arm shielding his front. The sight inspires dread in your gut.
"Shut that light off." Comes his low grumble, coughing the sound of something painful. You roll your eyes but oblige, turning for the light switch. But before you flick it off you take a regretful glance at him.
The torso of his suit is torn worse than his cape, with a gash through the bat symbol that runs like a claw mark across, and into, his chest. Similar scratches wrap around his waist and shoulders, all weeping a sickly red and burning their image into your mind. He looks like heâs been grabbed by something, something beastly that he wonât so much as let you know the existence of.
"Iâm sure no oneâs looking in my kitchen window. Itâs fine." You retort coolly and almost defensively, but the comfort of the darkness engulfing you both canât be denied.
Thereâs a safety in hiding that youâre beginning to understand more and more these days, though youâd hate to admit that youâve picked that up from the bat.
Though, with the darkness comes the shift. It's the circumstance settling in, the realisation of the long night you've got ahead of you now that he's back. It's anxiety inducing in its own, absurd way.
He scoffs his discontent and you rush back to his side, unable to resist throwing your arms around his shoulders while trying to be careful of his apparent injuries. He crumbles into your longing embrace, arms wrapping around your waist and pulling you into him like he can't get you close enough. His head falls to your shoulder, face turned inwards to your neck to breathe in your honeyed scent.
It comforts him, lets him relax his shoulders and makes his chest feel lighter.
"I missed you, my dear." The only words he can muster come out timid and breathless, lacking their usual, Bruce typical, bravado.
"I missed you too, B." You sigh. "Iâve been worried sick."
You pull back slowly, hands on his biceps to encourage him to take a step back. He can barely hold his head up, or rather doesnât try to when you reach for the menacing face of the cowl. It comes off easy and the sight of him has your breath caught in your throat. You drop the mask to the floor.
"Iâm sorry. Iâd never mean to worry you."
Bruce forces a closed lip smile for you, letting out a shaky sigh when you gently cup his sullied face in your palms. He leans down into the soft touch and the dark paint around his eyes smears beneath your thumbs when you glide them across his cheekbones.
"I know. But you know I will anyway." You hum, guiding him down so you can press a kiss to his forehead, caring not for the layer of sweat that sticks to the skin. Bruce nods.
A heavy breath passes his lips and he keens further down to again hide his face into the side of your neck, the tip of his nose squishing against you. You can feel the tenseness in his stature, hear it in each quivering exhale. So you keep him there for a moment, holding him gently with a hand running soothingly up and down his back.
Bruce needs this, but so do you. The adrenaline come down is rough, everything is a blur, all of it down to the autopilot journey that brought him here. It was only when the cowl came off that he realised it all and now the guilt of dragging you into this is creeping in and grounding thick roots.
Eventually he draws back, though somewhat reluctantly, standing tall in front of you with tired, steely blues staring through you. Your hands make a path down the column of his neck, making him shudder before your touch lands back on his shoulders to unfasten the cape from its anchors. It thuds to the tile right next to the cowl.
Heâll collect them on his way out.
"Let's get you cleaned up, yeah?" You offer, voice barely above a whisper. He nods and wordlessly hands himself over to you.
But before you go anywhere you keen onto your tiptoes, reaching to press a chaste kiss to Bruce's lips. He reciprocates with a grunt, hands tentatively holding your waist, careful not to curl clawed fingertips into the plush of your body. When you pull away his eyes seem to shine at least a little bit, a notion that makes your heart warm.
"C'mon then." You smile, taking both of his hands into one of your own and dragging him away down the corridor of your apartment.
With a hand still on his shoulder you gently push him into the tiny box of a bathroom, flipping the light switch to illuminate the garish decorative choices that the landlord wonât let you cover. Bruce leans on the edge of the seashell shaped sink, eyes searching you as if waiting for instructions.
"Stay here." You say softly. He hums and does just that.
With that you sneak away to your bedroom, gunning it for the drawer in the leftmost corner. Rummaging through the pile of clothes that youâve neglected to fold in the bottom draw you try to find something of his, knowing that youâve surely taken a t-shirt or two by now. Eventually you fish out a black henley that has more creases than you knew possible and a pair of grey sweatpants that are bobbled all over. It'll do.
You steal a black, Wayne Enterprises tee for yourself too. Itâs the kind of thing that is of no use to him so they end up yours for lounging around in.
When you return to Bruce he has shucked off the top half of his suit and thrown it over the top of the open door, as well as removed his boots and socks that now sit tucked under the sink, the clawed gloves laying in the basin. This leaves only the bulk of the trousers and the compression shirt that hugs his toned torso. He gives you a small smile when you enter, a weak one, but it's still a smile.
Then it's down to business. First placing the haphazardly folded clothes onto the closed lid of the toilet you turn to the medicine cabinet above the sink. From inside you grab a pack of makeup wipes.
"Come here." You softly beckon Bruce whose standing rigid in the corner of the room, watching your every move. With only one stride heâs at your side, arm brushing against yours.
You pull one wipe from the pack and swivel to face him, again cupping his jaw in your hand and encouraging him to lean over.
"Close your eyes." Itâs a gentle press, damp, a little bit cold, and you notice his nose twitch as you wipe the black smear from the bridge of it. Surprisingly, the dark paint comes off easily with only a couple of passes, and somehow no stain.
"There you go." Humming, you bin the sullied wipe. Bruce blinks a couple of times and finally remembers to relax his face. "Much better."
"Thank you." He clears his throat like suddenly remembering he can speak.
There's a tenseness in the air, the vulnerability of the situation perhaps feeling foreign to the both of you. This is the first time you've seen him quite so beat up and you're sure he's noticed how gingerly you're taking everything. Your words are sweet, pacifying, but he sees right through to your worries.
Pushing past the feeling you step over to the shower bath and lean over the tubs terracotta coloured siding to switch the water on. The pitter patter of the spray hitting the bottom fills your ears and seems to startle Bruce for a moment as his body jumps, shoulders up to his ears.
You've never seen him this quiet, closed off, or timid. It hurts your heart to see your Bruce like this, after all, timid of all things is never a word youâve associated with him. Itâs just not like him, not as Bruce or the bat. But it makes you even more determined to take proper care of him.
You approach him carefully, placing your hands to his squared shoulders and pushing lightly to encourage him to drop them. He forces another small grin for you, a very slight upturn of his chapped lips, and his hands take purchase at your hips with a tight grip. You pinch the fabric of his shirt between your forefinger and thumb, giving it a little tug.
"Can I take this off?" You ask, soothing your hands down his arms. Bruce raises a brow at you, though the fatigued look in his eyes remains.
"Oh." He looks down at himself briefly, as if having forgotten, or rather ignored the state heâs in. He hesitates for a long moment but you wait through it, watching his jaw clench as he muses over your question.
He doesnât know how bad it is yet.
Alongside the surface cuts anything could be hiding under the fabric, and the bruising has probably already settled in. Not to mention the couple of darker, black patches that indicate blood still actively weeping. He doesnât want to scare you with whatever damage could be underneath, forever trying to shield you from the harsher realities of his crusade.
Previous patch ups had been much more minimal, scrapes so small he didnât so much as notice the sting until you pointed out the trickle of blood down his arms. When itâs like that, a quick clean and plaster, he felt comfortably in control and like he wasnât giving away too much to fuel your worries.
But tonight had been far more eventful, straying well away from a typical patrol thanks to an unexpected intruder.
Typically he would turn to Alfred for something like this but with the Batmobile out of commission there was no way even he could make it back across the city in this state. He barely even made it to your fire escape.
He was out of his depth. And so were you. But you hadnât come to realise it just yet.
"Yes or no, Bruce?" You quietly prompt, squeezing his shoulders reassuringly.
After a pause he nods and raises his arms up every so slowly, muscles crying out from over exertion, and looks at you expectantly.
"Go on then, my dear." He says coolly.
You let your hands fall to grab the hem of his compression shirt, carefully pulling it up as it unsticks itself from his skin. There are minor lacerations on his stomach, thin lines that seep red and tack his shirt to his body with dried blood. Bruce hisses and his features scrunch up with the force of the pain.
"Sorry." You rush, freezing your actions. "Does that hurt?" The slight wobble in your voice makes his heart sink and he tries to relax his face. Bruce hums affirmatively.
"Yes but it's alright." He grits. "Just- just do it slowly for me, okay sweetheart?" Despite the slight strain to his words his tone remains perfectly patient, never wishing to be stern with you.
It melts you, the fact that even in this state of discomfort Bruce is so gentle with you. There's no harsh words, no impulsive snatches away from your touch, just a lasting responsiveness that makes this much easier. He could do this quicker by himself and he knows this, but your eagerness to show him this kind of doting breaks him down.
"Okay." You smile timidly as you try to maintain your wavering resolve, relaxing somewhat when he looks back at you with such a delicate gaze. You return to slowly pulling the shirt up Bruce's torso, tucking one hand underneath it to separate it from his skin while the other bunches the fabric up until it's under his armpits. He helps you with the final tug, pulling it over his head and ditching it on the bathroom floor.
You let your eyes scan over him, a body trained into hard lines. There are small, angry grazes on his arms but you only give those a passing glance, your stomach dropping when you look at his chest. His upper half is completely marred by thin, long lacerations that gap slightly at the thickest points. They wrap around his left shoulder, following a diagonal across his chest to his waist where the worst of them end.
"Itâs okay." Bruce says calmly, instinctively, having caught on to your stares. "Iâm okay." He lifts a hand to cradle your jaw and tips your head up just a slight so you have to meet his eyes. Theyâre mellow, still, with no glint of panic or fear to be found in the deep blue. It helps steady you.
Though the tremble of your bottom lip and the apparent unease written on your face is exactly what he feared.
"Hey, look at me." Bruce coaxes, suddenly far more talkative upon recognising the far away look in your eyes.
"I know it looks bad, I know. But itâs all just surface damage. Nothing that wonât heal, okay?"
"Youâre sure?" You utter after swallowing the hitch in your throat, your courage dwindling.
"Absolutely. Iâve dealt with worse, sweetheart." He swallows. "And Iâm not saying that to scare you, just so you know Iâm alright."
Closing the gap between you your head falls into the crook of his neck while your hands rest flat on his chest, feeling the steady rise and fall with bated breath as if you expect it to stop. You stay there for a second and Bruce lets you, his hand sweeping up and down your back soothingly.
Your heart drops when you realise where youâve ended up.
His arms cradle you, his words soothe you, but why should you need to be placated? Beside your palm his blood weeps from sullied skin and beneath it you feel the thunder of his heartbeat, still elevated. Youâve got it all backwards.
Bruce is the one who needs the comfort, the soothing, even though heâd never admit it. Day in, day out, he has to keep a straight face and a calm attitude for the sake of the rest of the team, after all if batman panics, everyone panics. But not here.
Here he is not the batman, not the dark knight, heâs your Bruce. You need to be the one with that straight face, that calm attitude, not the other way around. If not, how can you expect to care for him?
Taking a deep breath you gather yourself and steel your nerves.
"Alright. If you say so." You sigh against his skin. "Now c'mon or Iâll run out of hot water." You admonish lightheartedly, reaching for his heavy duty belt buckle. He huffs an airy laugh.
"And what a shame that would be. Someoneâs eager to rush." Bruce chides, leaning in to kiss your temple while you fumble to undo the heavy utility belt and free it from the clasps that anchors it to him.
"I'm eager to get you clean, B." You scold, jovial. "You smell."
Bruce scoffs and for a split second you see the corner of his mouth twitch, the smallest suggestion of a smile that he muscles back down.
"I canât say I realised berating me would be part of this." He says with a shake of his head, words dripping with sarcasm. "I get enough of that as is, you know?"
You can hear in his tone that heâs amused by it all, allowing himself to get more comfortable as he slips out of the midnight mindset.
You roll your eyes at him, though playfully rather than with any venom. "Based on what I learnt from Alfred, itâs necessary."
Another sigh of a laugh pushes through his nose and a more promising suggestion of a smile, or rather smirk. "I shouldâve known." He utters under his breath. "You two do love to scold me."
"I wouldn't say I love it." You finally get the belt fully off him and set it down on top of the tank of the toilet, quickly running out of places to put the various suit pieces. You can see why there has to be specific spots for all of these things. "I just try to keep you aware."
"Aware?" He echos, brows furrowed and timbre quizzical.
"Mhm. Most people would call you insane if they knew what you do out there." You shrug like itâs obvious, though only meant with levity.
"Oh, yes." He rolls his eyes with the same attitude. However, some sincerity lurks.
He knows it's a lot, the stress he must cause you. It's why heâs let you into one of the routine parts linked to his crusade, one that gives you some peace of mind in the control you can have when patching him up like this. Even today, despite being a more taxing day, a day thatâll leave a scar. He thinks it's helped. He hopes he's right.
"Arkham would love to have me, donât you think?"
You canât help but to laugh at that, the kind of spontaneous giggle that has you tucking your chin back and turning away from him as if you can hide the way it sways you. But you could never hide it from Bruce. He sees it in the crinkles beside your eyes, the way your shoulders quake with the force of mirth. The shaking of your head seals the deal.
"Theyâd have a field day with your mind, B."
With a bit of effort you tug his armoured trousers down and cringe at the heavy clunk of them hitting the tile, stepping away to let him kick them off his ankles. The compression leggings and boxers come down much easier at least.
"Now get in the tub." You say softly, gathering up the separate components of the bat suit and trying to at least fold them in some sort of way, though the panels of kevlar make it difficult. You do the best you can and leave it heaped in the sink.
Bruce shrugs and follows your instruction, pulling back the garish, floral print shower curtain to hide his body behind it. He sighs contently when the warm water hits his irritated skin, washing off loose dirt and traces of blood. Though the ache that starts to settle in is a feeling he knows all too well, a bruising weight on the whole body that makes staying on his feet a task within itself.
You hurry to get in alongside him, stripping yourself of your clothes much faster than you did him and hastily folding them up on the edge of the sink.
"Coming in, hon."
The curtain rings jingle obnoxiously as you tug it into place, smoothing its material with your hand before turning to Bruce. He is standing with his back to you and face towards the steady flow of water that cascades over him, running over his shoulders and down the column of his spine. His black hair somehow manages to get even darker with the cling of the water, though youâre left to wonder why heâs chosen to stand with his face under the shower head.
You stifle a giggle and step towards him, wrapping your arms around his midriff and pressing your cheek to rest on the expanse of skin between his shoulder blades. He jolts ever so slightly when you touch him, but soon relaxes into your familiar hold.
The two of you stand there for a moment, delighting in the feel of the warm water and the simplicity of each other's company. It's nice, a weird tranquility you had yet to grow used to. This combined with the knowledge, the feeling that Bruce was safe for the moment, made your heart thrum faster in your chest, its rhythm filling your ears.
Taking each of your hands Bruce slowly unwinds your arms from around him, apologising under his breath when he does. You pull your hands close to your chest as he slowly turns, staggering you both back a couple of steps, his head clear from the downpour that continues down his back.
Like this, with his head hung low to level with you, vulnerable bodies not even a step apart, you can see how exhausted Bruce looks.
His eyes are dull, half lidded, and the creases from the corners of them swoop down into shadowy, dark bags beneath them. His jaw is set stiff, teeth gritted, and you can hear the hinge click when he tries to relax it. The tension in his body is unforgiving and every muscle strains to accommodate it. And the scruffy stubble heâs been sporting the last couple of days only adds to the look.
You canât help but to chew your bottom lip anxiously.
"I know you said youâre alright." You begin, voice quiet and cautious. "But are you sure?"
Unexpectedly, he smiles. Itâs toothy and gracious and pulls at his lips with a snicker sneaking past them. For a second you arenât sure what to think, waiting still in the echo of his timid laugh. But the switch, the ignition of something in his eyes that brings the life back into them, it makes the bristle of adoration wash your skin warm.
"Do I look that bad?" Bruce cracks back, scrubbing his hand down his face and scratching the stubble on his chin. You roll your eyes and reach for him, cold hands cupping warm cheekbones with thumbs sweeping soft arches beneath dark circles.
His hands take purchase around your wrists, the pads of his thumbs resting against the line of your pulse. It skips that bit faster for him.
"You look tired. Thatâs all." Your voice stays soft but thereâs no masking the concern laced into your words.
"Hm. I suppose I am." He says flatly, unphased by the point of exhaustion he always drags himself to.
"Am I working too slowly?"
Bruce shakes his head and leans further down to you, an intimacy in the way he closes you in.
"No, no. I like that you take your time. Iâm used to too many things being slapdash."
Before you get a chance to protest any further Bruce closes the gap between you with a soft, almost shy, kiss. Your hands fall to his shoulders though slightly hover, cautious of his apparent injuries. He scoffs against your lips.
"Please, Iâm not fragile." His simper only grows stronger.
You click your tongue with no real venom, pressing an extra kiss to his chapped lips before reaching to snatch a balanced shampoo bottle off the edge of the tub.
"I know that."
Sage, spice and a dash of sandalwood, something you had bought and placed here so he didnât have to leave your place smelling like vanilla every time. Sure, itâs not as nice as whatever he has at home, but itâs the thought that counts. Plus anything smells better than iron and Gothamâs street musk, and you think a little spiciness suits Bruce quite nicely.
"Step out of the water, honey." You instruct carefully, noting the way Bruce's cheeks seem to tint a delicate pink, something you would've missed had you not been so close. He takes a cautious step towards you, trying his best not to slip on the grip mat that lines the bottom of the tub.
"Turn around." You nod your head towards the water and watch as he glances between you and the steady stream from the shower head. His lips pull into a subtle pout, an expression you wouldnât have recognised once upon a time with how he hides any outward tells of disappointment. But now itâs easy to see.
"But then I can't see you." He retorts in complaint, a smug lilt hiding in his tone. You sigh and pinch the bridge of your nose to feign annoyance.
"Bruce." You raise your brows at him. His expression is stoic but you know itâs a mask, know heâs secretly amused with himself. He grumbles a fine and turns on his heel, but not without a guilt tripping huff.
"Thank you." You prise open the shampoo bottle and empty a healthy amount into the well of your palm, admiring its translucent green shine before weighing it evenly between both hands and bringing them to the back of Bruce's head. He hums happily while you begin to work.
You start at the crown of his head, sudsing up the outermost layer of his hair before scrubbing into his scalp with your fingertips. The scent of the shampoo fills your nostrils, a much needed refresher. You continue your motions through the top length of his hair, gently working in the lather while being sure not to pull the strands. It's oddly precise, and far more delicate than Bruce's usual wash routine.
But it's nice, the sensation of your nails gliding over his scalp, carefully working their magic. It's almost like he can feel the stress leaving his tense body with every calculated touch. So much so that he lets his eyes fall shut, lashes kissing the high of his cheeks, and basks in your doting attention.
You canât help but to admire him. His hair, thick and soft, is ink black, it almost seems to absorb the light instead of reflecting it, itâs that dark. As your fingers interrupt the way it wants to naturally lay close to the roots you find a peppering of grey, little dashes that catch your eye. You arenât particularly surprised by the discovery, though.
"Is this what usually takes you so long when you shower?" Bruce says, tipping his head back for you.
You donât respond for a moment, too engrossed in scrubbing his scalp. He clears his throat to rouse your attention.
"You just said that you like how I take my time. Did you not?"
He sounds caught when he says, "Yes, but youâre very thorough." He shrugs and you watch the muscles ripple. Though the motion encourages a rivulet of fresh, bright blood to seep from one of the slender wounds, making a stout path down his back.
"Would you sooner I donât?" You scoff, almost offended. Itâs a lighthearted, unbelieving tsk, a tiredness of his habit to analyse and dissect everything that happens around him. You donât mind, not really, thatâs just Bruce.
"No, no. Itâs nice." He reassures, tone softening. "But my hair isnât particularly long to warrant it."
You hum thoughtfully and smile, feeling him relax beneath your touch when you kiss his scarred nape. Finishing with the back of his head you do a once over to make sure he's properly covered, amending a spot you missed by his right ear and patting his back firmly when you're done.
"Alright then, you can rinse it now." You smile, wiping your sudsy hands down the length of his back, making him shudder. Bruce grunts and looks at you over his shoulder, a subtle pout tugging at the corners of his lips once again.
"Are you not going to do it?" He balls, slightly exaggerated but off guard nonetheless. You fail to stifle a laugh as you shake your head, feeling your body flush warm in adoration.
"No, I canât from here, B." You chide lovingly. "If I did, you'd have to put your face under the water. Iâm afraid youâll have to do it yourself." You can see the disappointment on his face as his eyes narrow and he hesitates to respond, a rarity from him.
"I donât see how thatâs a problem. Arenât you supposed to be taking care of me?" Bruce retorts with sharp brows arched. You respond with the same expression, head tilted ever so slightly.
"Fine, but don't complain at me when you get water in your eyes." His smile is immediate, a signature, self-satisfied smirk.
"Alright. Though, if shampoo gets in my eyes that's totally your fault, sweetheart."
A heartfelt sense of relief finally washes over you when Bruce steps into the water, an avalanche of bubbles rolling down his spine without you even touching his hair. He still flinches just a little when you begin to scrub his scalp, but his stiff posture soon loosens.
What matters most is that he's back to being your Bruce.
The sarcastic remarks, the familiar smirk that pull his full lips thin, his charming, steely eyes that narrow with the playful looks he gives. All these things that you feared might slowly disappear with each passing patrol restored with just a bit of devoted care, and a palm full of shampoo.
He grunts while you run your fingers through his hair, tipping his head back to help you better clean the top. The water runs slightly filthy at the bottom of the tub, though the cowl does a mostly adequate job at keeping his hair clean. Well, clean of muck of Gotham grime, the sweat is another story.
You again pat his shoulders when the job is done, but twice this time. He turns around, satisfied, and cards his hand through his hair, slicking it back and out the way. He opens an arm to you and you step into the embrace, pleasantly surprised when he tucks you against his side.
"Thank you." Bruce hums, kissing the top of your head.
"Thank you?" You echo, puzzled. He nods his head like he's proud, smile never faltering.
"Yes, of course." Bruce says, feeling much more himself. He says it like it's obvious, deserved even, but it throws you off track. You laugh, blinking up at him.
"But I havenât finished yet."
"No, but youâre doing a good job."
"Hm. Thank you."
The beat of silence is pleasant, warranted, despite your slight confusion in the reprieve. But as quickly as he had brought you there you step away from his side, driven by a sense of urgency.
"All right." You clap your hands together, waving off his remark and glancing at the lined up bottles of product with water dripping down their labels.
"One or two shampoos?" You ask innocuously.
Bruce seems taken back by your question, giving you an askance look to show it. But as always he quickly wipes it away.
"Two, of course. I know the state of me might suggest otherwise but Iâd hope thatâs not too much to ask." His lips purse and you can see that he's holding back a further remark. Yep, definitely back to being your Bruce.
"Itâs not. Turn around again, please."
Before you know it you know it you've done another shampoo and conditioner on top of that and with every step Bruce is acting much more like his usual self. He doesnât need to say it, you can just tell heâs feeling better now, only getting more chipper and talkative, throwing sarcastic digs your way and trying to pull you into his arms every so often.
The relief was indescribable. The difference between this Bruce versus the one that had sullenly arrived on your fire escape was a drastic juxtaposition. Yet another reminder of why these moments to recover are so important, and why he let you be a part of them to begin with. Itâs reassuring to see him step back into himself, to see how he always bounces back.
But you had been dragging it out somewhat, knowing that now youâre faced with the part you were dreading most. The wounds. The bleeding stopped some time ago and the washout from the shampoo has helped loosen some of the dried blood that was tacked to his skin, but the toughest task still remains.
Bruce can see your unease, watching your eyes scan his torso up and down as if trying to rationalise what you do next.
"Donât psych yourself out." He urges, gentle hands squeezing your shoulders. "Itâs not as bad as it looks, remember?"
You balk. "But itâs still worse than what Iâve helped you with before."
"That doesnât mean you treat it any differently. Maybe slower, if anything." Another squeeze and a touch that glides down your upper arms, offered with a reassuring smile.
You hum and reach for the soap dish, his hands falling away from you and eyes following your movements. Itâs a small, scentless bar, suited for delicate jobs like this.
But despite his reassurances the sight of his injuries still inspires dread low in your gut. It feels a sisyphean task. You can't help but to stare woodenly as you stew in your uncertainty.
Bruce observes you patiently.
"I said donât psych yourself out."
"I heard you the first time." You turn and set back down the now empty soap dish.
"You heard me, but you didnât listen."
"Oh myâ" You pinch the bridge of your nose with your free hand and your eyes screw shut. The look of annoyance. He knows it well.
"Donât lecture me, Bruce. Youâre off duty."
He huffs his amusement while you wet the soap in the running water and rub it between your hands to coat them in a layer of soft suds.
You begin with the smaller grazes on his arm, thumbing around the small lacerations to clean off any grime that surrounds them that got through the rips in his suit. There isnât much, Bruce is too careful, but in a couple of places thereâs skids that look as if he was dragged across the floor.
A bigger flake of dirt falls from his elbow and disintegrates in the water at your feet. He watches intently as you work up his arm, following the curves of his toned musculature and purposefully dodging the laceration on his shoulder that wraps around the curve of his skin. When you reach his collar you have him turn and rinse the arm, making sure to treat the largest of the cuts very carefully.
What can only be described as a web of dry blood flitters off of the shoulder wound and disappears down the drain in a swirl of soap bubbles. He tsks, not phased by the sight but not a fan of it either. You're a little more shaken by it, however.
The cuts on his chest are still lined with that same, sticky dry blood that webs over the thin openings, making it hard to tell what the wounds actually look like. You worry for what you'll find.
"Do you want me to do it, instead?" Bruce offers, reading your unease. "I don't mind."
You hesitate, chewing on your bottom lip. You watch how his chest rises and falls, the steadiness of the breaths he takes and how it animates his body. The bruises are in full bloom now, shades of blue and purple painting his pallid skin. It makes your heart ache.
The shake of your head is firm, determined.
"No, it's okay." Soapy hands return to him and to the task at hand. "I've got you."
"Watch your step, I don't want you to fall." The shower curtain is drawn back and you stand on the tile with a towel wrapped around your body. Bruce's hand is in yours as you guide him out of the tub, his own towel thrown over his shoulders.
"Thank you, but I think I can manage just fine." He hums. But as he goes to lean his weight on one leg his foot nearly slips out from underneath him and you have to hurry to steady him with a hand that flies to his shoulder.
"You were saying?" You snigger.
He scowls and playfully rolls his eyes. "I stand corrected."
Bruce is already looking much better than when he stepped into the terracotta hued tub. His skin is clear of dirt and dried blood as is his hair, the pink has returned to his appled cheeks, and he smells so much better. Not that you'd ever tell him smelt that bad but god, he did.
The only remaining issue is the cuts, the majority of which are scattered over his chest and shoulders. But even those are looking better still, they have settled from the angry red that they were and one or two of the smallest ones are already trying to scab over.
"Sit down, please." You instruct, sweeping up his clothes from the toilet lid and handing them to him in a heap. He nods with a hum.
After towelling yourself down you retrieve your underwear from where it was folded with your clothes on the sinks edge and throw them on, followed by Wayne Enterprises shirt you picked out. The sight of the bat suit's clawed gloves still laying in the basin makes you sigh. You're glad that repairing the suit isn't your responsibility, after tonight it's going to need just as much TLC as Bruce does.
While Bruce wrestles himself into the bobbled sweats you step around the sink and once again open the cabinet above it, fishing out a first aid kit you had put there months ago.
You used to always have a makeshift one, a few plasters, gauze, the bare minimum really. But after finding out about Bruce's⌠secret, you felt an upgrade was more than necessary. Alfred helped you put it together, all you need for if the bat turns up on your doorstep, or by your window, looking worse for wear.
It's seen a couple of uses, mainly when a pre-existing laceration reopens and you have to amend it before going out to dinner. Or, there was the time that he took a particular tough punch square on the chin. Because he was missing you he came straight here instead of retreating to the manor, and it became your job to patch up the way the skin split. You're pretty sure it didn't scar but his current stubble situation stops you from checking.
Regardless, this is the biggest first aid job you've been saddled with thus far. You try your best not to let that fact intimidate you.
You turn to Bruce with the hydrant red box in your hands, happy to see him half dressed and now sat on the lid of the toilet. His shirt is draped across one knee and left to wait, and he's thrown his towel over the bath side after scruffing his hair dry with it.
He recognises the kit immediately and the familiarity of your current situation makes him smile just slightly.
You step into the space between his spread legs and his hands immediately find home at your waist, toying with the fabric of your shirt. His shirt? Your shirt. You set the box on his lap and flip it open, first grabbing the usual saline to properly clean his cuts.
"Ready?" You smile, looking forward to getting this over and done with.
"Mhm." His lips twitch but eventually pull into a bigger, matching grin, albeit a little subdued.
With your own hands clean you soak a small cloth in the solution and let your gaze meet Bruce's. His true-blue eyes have been steadily following your every movement all evening and almost seem to gleam when you look at him.
When you bring the cloth to his split skin he initially winces, the dull pain perhaps bringing about some kind of sting. But his posture soon slacks as he gets used to the damp press, almost like a kiss over the contusions. He sighs, letting the tension he was holding dissipate.
"Well this is familiar." Bruce quips, squeezing your waist in calloused hands while you wash over the cuts framing his chest.
"It is, isn't it?" With your cloth you climb up the length of his arm to dab the smaller cuts there as well as the long one on his shoulder. The more you work away at him the easier it becomes, and you can only hope that you're doing a sufficient job of it.
When you're done you drop the cloth into the sink and dry the cuts with a fresh gauze pad.
Bruce hums happily, snaking his arms around your back to pull you into him. A poorly timed embrace but you accept it none the less, hooking your chin over his shoulder and breathing in the freshness of your lover all clean.
Yeah, the spiciness suits him.
"Thanks, sweetheart." He mumbles against the shell of your ear, hands caressing up your back, tracing along either side of your spine.
"We're still not done yet." You giggle, dancing your fingertips down his arms as you pull back. He shrugs knowingly and leans back, watching you dive back into the first aid kit.
"True. But at least the worst of it is."
"Yeah, I guess you're right."
Next is a little palm sized tin. You pop it open to retrieve the steri-strips that hide inside, thin and slender plaster like strips to hold closed the wider cuts, aiming to reduce the chance of a scar.
"Hopefully they won't scar too badly." You grumble under your breath, feeling the weight of the responsibility. His hands, having returned to your waist, again squeeze you delicately.
"I wouldn't worry about that." Bruce reassures. "One or two more won't do me any harm, I've got plenty of bad ones anyway."
"But if it scars that would mean I didn't take proper care of you," You mutter like it's the most obvious thing in the world. You close the tin and swap it out for a different, fractionally larger tin. "And we can't have that."
It's a wonder how the simplest of sentiments can melt Bruce in an instant when they come from you. It catches him off guard, the warm feeling sitting on both his heart and in his stomach, like a whirlwind of butterflies that makes his face hot.
He hums affirmatively and doesn't let on, though the way his cheeks tint ruddy would give it away if you weren't looking elsewhere.
Popping open the cigarette box style tin you rummage through it with index finger and middle, picking out the largest plasters you have. It takes a mix of those and conforming bandage to get him put to rights, but after some fumbling the job is finished and you can finally take a breath.
You kiss the patch on his shoulder and he seizes the opportunity to hook an arm around you once again.
"Am I all sorted?" Bruce noses against the side of your head, his fingertips pressing dimples into the soft give of your hips. You shiver and nudge his opposite shoulder with an open palm.
"Mhm, those should be okay now. But I won't be offended if you go to Alfred for a second opinion sinceâ"
He grabs your face with a forceful delicacy, thumbs cupping the round of your cheeks while his pinkies hook under your jaw.
Bruce kisses you. All reassurance, thanks and admiration. His lips are a little chapped but still feel silken soft against your own, as does the tip of his nose that bumps yours. You can feel him grinning against you and curve your lips to follow before he draws back.
"Thank you, sweetheart."
His voice comes thick, honeyed, almost sounding choked up on his gratitude. His boyish smile is back, the one that seeps infectious happiness and shines like a full moon being watched from the same fire escape he crashes on to, and the hardened look in his eye is gone, washed away with the suds that swirled down the drain. He looks positively rejuvenated, shining with the kind of cheeky charm you're used to.
Words fail you. A warmth flushes over your body head to toe, rising goosebumps all over your skin like a breeze had crept in. You pick the black henley back up and hand it to him sheepishly, nodding a shy response.
"You're welcome, B. I'm just glad you're okay."
He pulls his shirt on swiftly, moves the first aid kit from his lap onto the wet tiled floor, and stands with a groan. Stretching his arms up to the ceiling until both shoulders click he then drops his hands again. He steps toward you and takes both of your hands in his own, enveloping you in his shadow as his head blocks the light shade.
"More than okay, all thanks to your help." Turning the both of you around he begins walking you backwards out of the bathroom. You let yourself be led, taking each blind step back plenty slowly.
"Well, I didn't do that much." You counter. Bruce's expression falters for a second, screwed, disagreeing.
"But you did it well, very well."
"You think so?"
"Of course." He stops in your bedroom door, lurking at the threshold. His hands return to find your hips now, instead, and your own take purchase on his biceps. He squeezes like he always does, a reassurance he loves to give.
"I know it's scary, and I'm sorry." His face softens with his sincerity. "But you kept calm and you helped me out a great deal. So, yes, you did a very good job, my dear."
Heat bristles up the back of your neck, a bashfulness that creeps over the face and pulls your lips into a toothy smile. You can feel the force of it, the tug that's reminiscent of a soreness from laughing too hard.
"And I'm not even done yet."
"You're not?" His thorned brows furrow, knotted handsomely in the middle, puzzled but intrigued.
With a titter you sneak out of his hold and flop yourself down onto the bed, positioning a pillow behind you as you rest against the headboard with open arms.
He keeps his post in the doorway, the same bemused expression remaining. The raise of one brow asks a question.
Your grin never dulls. You pat your stomach with one hand and make a childish grabbing motion with the other. He exhales a long 'ohh' under his breath and practically hurls himself onto the bed beside you, as well as he can in his current state. The mattress springs creak in both welcome and complaint when he weighs them down.
Bruce wedges an arm around your back and lays himself between your legs, his head resting on your stomach like it were a pillow. His other hand sits on your thigh and draws lazy patterns across the soft skin, it almost tickles but you welcome the careful touch.
Meanwhile one of your arms comes to rest around his shoulders while your other hand combs through his hair, fingertips drawing lines along the silvery grey hiding at the roots.
You both sigh in turn, a long exhale of stresses held and finally relieved after a long night of tender love and care. Bruce noses even further into you, squeezing you tight.
His voice comes mumbled, lazy and muffled against your shirt. "Thanks, darling. I owe you."
"Do you?" You keen, your interest piqued.
"Mhm. I'll take you some place nice to make up for the scare, promise."
You bark a laugh, warm and endearing. It rocks him subtly and he winds his other arm around you, clinging tight and cosying down.
"You don't have to, honey. Like I said, I'm just glad that you're okay."
He shrugs, shoulders nudging into you. "'Want to though."
"Alright, we can do that, then." You concede.
Silence falls, comfortable and easy, a type of peacefulness that drives home the importance of these moments to recover.
It's taken a lot to get Bruce to let you in, to work up to this point and allow you familiarity with his life as the batman. Of course he had wanted to hide it away, to live in the illusion that he can draw a line between the lives he leads and keep you on one side of it. But he knows now that letting you in was the best decision he could've made.
Because you reward him with normality.
Typically, if he returned to his empty bedroom at the manor, he would collapse with some suit pieces still on and wounds still weeping. He wouldn't allow himself the opportunity to shift where his mind resides and would wake restless, unsatisfied.
But by sharing in the intimacy you would usually show him as Bruce and not the bat you break down the strict divide between the two. You show him how his two lives can coexist without sacrifice of the other.
He's all one man. And he's all yours.
"I love you, sweetheart." He's looking up at you now, neck twisted almost uncomfortably all so that he can see your pretty face and the even prettier smile that tugs your features when the words leave his lips.
"I love you too, honey. Try to get some sleep, yeah?"
As if it were a command Bruce nestles his head back down and lets his eyes flutter a shut, a small hum of 'okay' leaving him before exhaustion catches up to him and pulls him into a deep sleepâŚ

free drinks at the iceberg lounge sounded all too tempting when you first heard of tonightâs event, but what you hadnât known is that some of gothamâs finest faces would be in attendance, and a certain suit and tie has his eyes set on youâŚ

Ice at the bottom of a hurricane glass. You swirl it idly as it melts down, nudging increasingly smaller cubes with the end of a straw. You contemplate another as you swing your feet with your boredom but the bar staff are already inundated with constant orders. Youâd hate to contribute to the onslaught any more than you already have.
But, for you, the night has already run its course.
While others are just finding their momentum, whisked away in the mindlessness of a drunken buzz, youâve about run out of the patience you had reserved for the evening. And even then you didnât start with much.
Itâs Oliver Queenâs birthday, or so youâve been told. You havenât actually caught a glimpse of the man all night but on occasion youâll hear a voice obnoxious enough to be his echo over the crowd. Raucous laughter always follows but itâs hollow, performed to please and believed by the man in the middle.
Itâs the kind of people youâd expect to find, suits and ties and dresses with plunging necklines. All of these people attend as a formality, business partners and investors, acquaintances and maybe even rivals. You doubt that thereâs a single person among them who would call tonightâs host a friend.
At least thatâs one thing you have in common.
Maybe it wasnât worth being here after all. You werenât invited but it seems like nobody formally was. Queen had rented out The Iceberg Lounge, opened the doors, and given it no further thought. Even as a total stranger getting in was easy.
And sure, the couple of drinks youâd managed to get from the open bar certainly tasted pleasantly expensive, but the novelty quickly wore off thanks to all the tipsy businessmen you had to trade pleasantries with.
You should leave before they get any worse.
Though, just when you thought youâd found a safe table tucked in the corner to call yours, yet another suit and tie decides itâs the perfect time to meet your eyes. But heâs not just any suit and tie.
âMr. Wayne.â If you had a sip of your drink left you may well have choked on it.
Dark, slicked back hair with a few strays that hang down from a widow's peak and reach the eyebrows. Greying strands by the temples and a clean shaven, sharp jaw. His expression is steeled and eyes cold behind thin framed glasses, but thereâs a flashing glint of acknowledgment that shines briefly. He looks gorgeous, as neatly put together as is typically expected of him.
But he almost looks startled when you address him, despite standing across the table youâre clearly situated at. Although he quickly muscles down the telling way his brows jumped up.
âApologies.â He nods, clearing his throat and fixing you a stare down his nose. âI didnât realise there was anyone over here.â
Youâre not sure if you should think of him as rude for that. Though, it is quite true that the corner youâve tucked yourself into is otherwise desolate.
Itâs not particularly close to the bar but instead above it on one of the balcony type floors the venue boasts, giving you a good look down at it. The DJ of the night is as far from you as you could manage and the wall speaker that should be interrupting you is broken, creating one of the few pockets of relative quiet in the whole building. The light is less abrasive, too. The rest of the place favours white light that stings like LED headlights but they donât reach you over here. Itâs a nice spot, actually.
And the man across from you mustâve thought the same.
If you knew him you wouldâve known that he considers this âhis tableâ, wouldâve known that this is where he always slinks away to when the unpleasant company of the place becomes too overbearing. No one ever joins him over here, itâs an unspoken rule of sorts, so he stands unsure for a moment upon making eye contact with you.
His tolerance for socialising has already been pushed to a limit this evening, patience worn down even worse than yours. But something about you makes him hesitate. He looks you over, eyes sweeping up and down what isnât blocked by the table, and reaches for the chair opposite you.
âIs this seat taken?â Mr. Wayne asks with a casual confidence about him, a voice thatâs smooth as velvet. He doesnât wait for your answer before he starts pulling the chair out.
Nervousness makes a grab at you, upskittling something uneasy like butterflies in your stomach. His gaze is immobilising, it wipes your mind of any rebuttal. You nod, pursing your lips and sitting back in your seat in an effort to look more presentable.
All night youâd been trying your hardest not to get trapped with someone like this, successfully making a getaway the other times men of money had tried to engage you. The energy it takes to humour them and their out of touch conversation topics is never worth it, after all. But now youâre cornered.
âSorry to intrude,â He starts, setting a mostly empty whisky glass down on the table. âI hope you donât mind too much.â
You glance at it beside your own. No ice. Neat. And right about now the last sip of it is looking like the perfect remedy for your throat thatâs suddenly gone dry.
âThatâs alright. I was just about to make my way out of here, anyway.â You shrug, trying not to look at him for worry your expression will give away your antipathy.
âSo soon?â
But you can't deny that the sound of his voice is alluring. Heâs well spoken, purposeful, and lacks the grating drawl that all of his associates seem to possess.
âUh, yes.â You stammer, made shy under his unwavering gaze. âNot to be rude but this isnât my sort of crowd. I can't stand these types.â
He either ignores or fails to realise the fact that the generalisation you made includes him, and hums a low noise of understanding.
âNot rude at all. Neither can I.â
It seems the irony is lost on him.
You canât help but laugh, trying to bite back the coy giggle that begs to fall from your lips, poorly hidden behind your closed fist that conceals your smile. The sound sets goosebumps running down Mr. Wayneâs arms, a little electric thrill that catches him by surprise.
Maybe itâs not so bad that youâre here, after all.
A more muted, polite chuckle comes from across the table, a deep rumble thatâs heavy in its charm. His social battery is suddenly rejuvenated, awake and alive as the sweet sound of you fills his ears. The stare he gives you only becomes more brazen as he looks through his brows with something like a hankering starting up at the back of his mind.
You feel scrutinised. Ear tips flush hot and a shudder down the column of your spine has you clearing your throat and stopping your tittering with a cough into your first.
âSorry.â The whisper comes before you can register the thought. âI donât know why that tickled me so much.â
A grin tugs his lips, a flash of white teeth thatâs most fetching. Youâre not a regular, he can see that much, and heâs disappointed by the idea that you wonât be here to rescue a sour night in the future. The realisation brings on a sense of urgency.
He canât let you slip through his fingers.
âAre you sure I canât interest you in another drink?â He prompts, reaching for his glass to polish off whatâs left.
Thereâs a pause, a moment of reservation, surprised by both his asking and the fact that you donât immediately hate the idea. Youâre loosening up, growing somewhat used to his company and finding yourself intrigued by his unexpected chatter. But maybe itâs just the jealousy over that last sip.
âYouâd be lucky to get to the bar.â With a nod you guide his eyes to the crowd of drunkards surrounding the place from all angles. All seats are taken and some unsophisticated types have taken to sitting on the bar top, much to the chagrin of the staff.
Mr. Wayne hums. âI suppose that does look rather univinting, doesnât it?â
âMhm.â You look back at him.
Thereâs a poignant pause, a tsk of his lips pursing and you feel inclined to reach for your glass again, maybe swirl the ice around some more.
You thought heâd be glad to hear that youâre leaving, working under the assumption that he was seeking solitude as youâve heard that he so often does, not half the socialite heâs said to be. You also thought youâd be in more of a rush, that you wouldâve stood by now and taken your leave. But something keeps you in your seat.
âWell then. Can I at least see you to your car?â
Eyes dart up, something like bemusement lingering. But behind thin glass lenses the look he gives you is as resolute as ever, giving nothing away. You want to groan but you bite it back.
âOh, I appreciate it but thatâs alright. I walked, actually.â
Finally, his expression falters.
Itâs discreet, something you wouldâve missed had you not been staring. But a crease pulls between his brows that knit taut together, the bridge of his nose scrunched, and the corner of his lip twitches with what couldâve been a frown. He composes himself too quickly for you to know for certain.
Itâs a late night in Gotham and a weekend too, Saturday having turned to Sunday only a couple of hours prior. Itâs the worst night for it, really, at least according to patrol records. But the greater of his worries is this damn event. All of the criminals that would typically be in the lounge at this time have been kicked out for the sake of this egofest, making the streets an even bigger risk than whatâs typical.
Walking home amongst them, especially looking as you do, would no doubt be a grave mistake.
âRight.â Mr. Wayne nods, curt and visibly tense.
The pads of his fingers drum on the table in front of you and he glances into his empty glass as if the idea heâs looking for will be swishing at the bottom. You wait, left to sit with your confusion while he muses.
âIâd hate to beâŚâ He starts, trailing off in uncertainty. It takes him a moment to find the right words, suddenly careful in how he regards you. âBrash.â
You watch him wince, growing skeptical. âBut?â
âBut,â He huffs. âI know this area well enough to suggest that walking home isnât the best idea, unfortunately.â
Another pause. Shorter this time. You glance at your hands where they rest in your lap, thumbs twiddling. You can feel his gaze draped heavy on you, expectant and resolute.
âWell, I donât really have another option.â
He jumps in rather hastily. âI can drive you, instead.â
You donât dare to look at him, knowing youâll find out how persuading he can be. âI appreciate that, Mr. Wayne. I really do butââ
âBruce.â
âPardon?â
âCall me Bruce. I insist.â He sits back in his chair and holds his head a little higher, recovering some of the nonchalance and bravado thatâs typical of him.
The tension is nearing on stifling, a heady presence in the air that feels to push on your chest with its eagerness to have you acknowledge it. It doesnât look to make the same impression on Bruce, though. Heâs relatively composed by comparison, but with another glance down at your lap you miss the way he tugs at the collar of his shirt as if itâs suffocating him.
âOh.â You feel your cheeks warm, whole body flushed by an ardent heat that makes you shy.
âWell, Bruce, as nice as it is for you to offer, I'd hate to waste your time.â
He almost looks offended, incredulous that youâd suggest such a thing.
âYou wouldnât be wasting my time, you can be sure of that. I was looking to get out of here myself, anyway.â
And just like that heâs twisted your arm.
A combination of his charming timbre and steady tenacity were sure to be your undoing. Youâd anticipated it when he sat down, but still you could kick yourself for it. Although, you could soon be thanking yourself instead.
âWell, only if youâre sure.â You concede.
âBut uh, without sounding rude, should you be driving?â He raises a sharp brow and you point at the empty glass that his fingers are still wrapped around. He scoffs but finds your concern endearing.
âThis is all Iâve had. But if youâd prefer, I donât mind sitting a while to sober up.â
To your relief he takes no offence, shrugging suited shoulders coolly. If anything heâs glad to have the opportunity to talk some more, set on bypassing the formalities and banal small talk, all of the things that create an obstacle between you both.
âIâd like to, if thatâs alright with you.â You nod, a polite smile pulling at your lips. His breath hitches in his throat, a skip of his heart.
All this over a smile. He has to wonder if you know what youâre doing to him.
âOf course. But letâs talk there, not here.â Finally, Bruce lets go of his glass and rises from his seat, walking around to your side of the table. Extending an open palm he offers you his hand, his stature imposing at this angle.
Your heart races as you slip your hand into his, the heat of his touch bristling up your arm when he closes his grip.
âMy car is right outside. Shall we go?â
The music fades, the bass grows weak, lost beneath the crowd of murmurs that you leave behind. Youâre surprised no one notices him passing by, a head above the horde with a notorious grin thatâs sure and no doubt on show right now. But no one seems to care.
You donât know why you thought that they would. After all, a dolled up and otherwise unfamiliar girl hooked onto the arm of Bruce Wayne is nothing if not typical. But to you itâs slightly troubling.
For no apparent reason you expect someone to notice that your hand doesnât rest comfortably on his blazer clad bicep, that your steps donât fall in a nice rhythm with his. You donât feel like you fit the bill of his usual conquest and yet he himself has this eager glow about him, satisfied to have you at his side and keen to escort you out of this underwhelming event.
To think that your evening has strayed so far from expectation, itâs nerve-wracking but electrifying. Perhaps you would be better off taking it in your stride.
This isnât an opportunity youâll see again, after all, company youâll likely only share in once.
You hold your head a little higher and by the time youâve somewhat quieted your mind youâve reached the back exit. Security offer Bruce a steady nod and a man of intimidating stature opens the fire door for you, holding it steady as you both pass through, you ahead of Bruce.
The night is bitter, a biting breeze turning the air cold and eliciting goosebumps down your arms. You look over your shoulder for Bruce who is barely a step behind you. His hands take purchase on your upper arms, tepid palms sweeping up and down to encourage some warmth into your skin.
âThatâs me over there.â He nods ahead and you follow his eyeline, landing on a pristine black jaguar.
You know it immediately from the hood ornament, the big cat polished and proud. However, despite this itâs a less flashy pick than what you had expected. Itâs no doubt expensive, of that you can be sure, but itâs otherwise a classic little car thatâs surprisingly quaint.
With a grip that's steadfast on your arms he walks you toward it, his presence behind you acting like a push forward. He only takes a hand away to fish in his pocket when youâre standing by the passenger side. Itâs three doors, relatively low to the ground, and through the window you can see the beige leather interior.
It only takes a second for him to have it unlocked, the jingling keys hooked onto his index finger as he opens the door for you. But before he invites you in he unexpectedly folds down the passenger seat. It slides forward on its rails and opens up access to the back bench, a comfy, deep seat in the same pristine leather.
Bruce steps back, an outstretched arm holding down the collapsed front seat when he turns to you.
âI figure we can sit in the back for now, if you donât mind. More comfortable since weâve got some time to kill.â
âOh?â You utter, barely more than a breath. But he isnât discouraged, looking at you with a patient smile. You nod and duck into the back seat, shuffling over to the furthest side.
It only takes a moment to appreciate that heâs right, it is more comfortable. Relaxing against the back bench you find it to be surprisingly spacious, having been concerned about the amount of room when you first stepped in. It looks cramped from the outside but once youâre situated itâs more than pleasant.
Tinted rear windows offer a sense of security and privacy while blocking any harsh light that tries to shine in. And with the front seats pushed forward youâre allowed plenty of legroom, which is a clear necessity for Bruce as he gets comfortable next to you.
Leant forward he pulls the car door closed, leaving the seat folded as he leans back with a sigh. His knee is pressed snug against yours and for some reason it makes your heart jump, a giddy skip of a beat while he doesnât even seem to notice. You make no attempt to move away.
âMuch better, donât you think?â Bruce asks, a sidelong glance over his glasses trained heavy on you.
You nod, returning a less confident look. âMhm.â
The tension is mounting again already, if it had ever abated at all. Thereâs something about him thatâs causing this nervous energy to thrum through you, an eruption of butterflies in the gut and a heat down the back of your neck.
Itâs commanding you but you feel no inclination to stop it. If anything, you're enjoying it.
âI havenât seen you before, have I?â
And there he goes making it worse. The question comes impassively enough, innocuous on the surface but youâre not ignorant enough to not hear his further implication.
When you give no answer he reaches for you with an assertive hand taking purchase on your leg. Lithe fingers hook around your thigh while his thumb sweeps soothing strokes just above your knee, an unexpectedly chaste ministration. Regardless, a breath catches in your throat, a gulp you strain to swallow down.
âUh no.â You manage your quiet retort. âThis isnât my kind of place.â
Bruce hums, now gazing passively at where his touch rests. âThen what brought you here?â
You shrug. âHonestly? I just wanted to sneak a couple of free drinks, they were letting anyone and everyone in, so.â
âOf course they were.â He seems unimpressed. âQueenâs security are a joke.â
âDonât mention him. It was bad enough knowing I was in the same building as him.â
Bruce laughs, a break through his composed and collected attitude to something more hearty and sincere. Heâs glad youâre finding your voice now, working past that shyness and giving him a proper look at you in all your sweetness.
âNot a fan then, I take it?â He asks knowingly.
Youâre quick to shake your head and mimic a more coy type of laugh. The mirth thatâs found its way around you allows a far greater sense of comfort, abandoning your unease as youâre finally able to drop your shoulders and give up your performative properness.
âGood, me either.â He squeezes your leg and the press of his fingertips makes you shudder. But he doesnât comment.
Heâs eating up every reaction, every giggle, every smile. Itâs all so earnest and he simply isnât used to it. But he needs more of it, craves being a familiar person to you, not someone new you have to hide yourself from.
But he knows that isnât an option. Instead, heâll need a quick fix, something a little more improper that can still sate the desire youâve roused in him.
âWill I see you again?â
As easy as that he shifts the mood, a sense of severity brought in by his raspy timbre.
âHm?â
His hand slides up your leg, resting mid thigh. âWell, given that this isnât your type of place, do you think Iâll see you again?â
For some reason you find it difficult to answer, tempted to ask him to repeat himself just to buy some time although you heard him loud and clear. Itâs a weighted question and you donât want your answer to be taken as rejection. But you speak truthfully.
âI suppose not.â You again shrug and sigh. âI can't say I liked it in there.â
Bruce nods. âWhat about out here?â
âOut hereâs much better.â
He smiles and you do too, a silent understanding.
âIn that case,â He keens forward, ducking his head close to you and glancing at where his hand rests. Your heart thunders and you can do nothing but stare at his smug smirk. âIf I may not get to see you again, how about we make the most of this?â
Your response is uncharacteristically quick. âIs that why you brought me back to your car?â
He scoffs, nonplussed but pleasantly amused. The smirk becomes something toothier.
âNot entirely. I will still be making sure that you make it home safely tonight. But if thatâs all you need from me we can get in the front andââ
Then his hand starts to withdraw, whether because heâs unsure or because itâs his way of giving you the choice you donât know. You grab it anyway. Perhaps a little too eagerly.
âI uh, I thought we needed to kill some time first?â
Finally his gaze flickers upwards, a glint in his eye as he stares over frames that slide down his nose.
âYouâre right.â Heâs absolutely beaming, eyes pushed to squint by a grin so wide it pulls dimples into place either side of it. His touch climbs higher, a tenacious grip that stills once his fingers brush the hem of your dress.
âIs this okay with you?â He asks patiently, trying to tamp down his hungry grin.
You nod, a breathy whisper of âyesâ falling from your lips.
âCome on then. I want you on my lap.â
Brows shoot up, your heartbeat droning in your ears as it quickens. You forgot to anticipate his boldness, forgot that this is nothing atypical for him. But it only furthers your excitement as he reaches over you to take you by the waist, a guiding pull and command to straddle him.
Take it in your stride, you remember. Enjoy the experienced touches he can offer you and let go of your inhibitions.
Knees plant either side of his hips, the leather seat moulding beneath the weight of you both. The hem of your dress is forced upwards as your legs spread over his thighs and his eyes immediately dart to the exposed skin, gaze greedy and climbing up your figure until your eyes meet.
âThere you go.â Bruce hums, hands resting comfortably on your waist. His grip falls stronger now, thumbs pressing valleys into the soft give of your body. âHowâs that, sweetheart?â
You gulp, the pet name hitting your ears heavy. He sees the way you shiver, the way your eyes glisten and hips unknowingly shift. He swears to himself that he wonât miss a thing, that heâll truly make the most of this, of you.
âGood.â You nod with a sweet half-smile, your hands coming to rest on his broad shoulders. He returns the grin, again leaning forward but even closer now, his breath fanning hot on your cupid's bow.
âGood. Can I kiss you?â
One hand comes up to cup your jaw and his thumb rests idle by the corner of your mouth. You feel dwarfed in his hands.
You nod into his palm and he pounces.
Haste lends him to roughness, a bruising kiss thatâs all hunger and no hiding. Bruce pulls you toward him with fingers hooking around the back of your neck, thumb resting on the apple of your cheek and he could groan at the heat radiating off of your skin. You canât help the gasp you let slip into his mouth, fingertips curling into the collar of his blazer as if to brace yourself.
You feel you should be startled but the way his affections immediately set shockwaves rolling over your skin leads to something much more pleasant. Youâre brimming with excitement, pulse quick and body pliant.
Itâs a fumble to match his fervour, trying to follow his lead but heâs evidently got a better handle on this than you do. The press of his lips is confident, a graze of teeth on your bottom lip while your ragged breaths dance over his defined cupid's bow.
A muffled yelp peaks at the back of your throat and seems to snap him out of his carnal greed.
Bruce slows like it never happened, becoming much more deliberate with his actions and offering slower, sweeter kisses like apologies before pulling back. Youâre left breathless at the loss of his lips.
âSorry.â He clears his throat with no real sense of remorse to be found in his tone. His glasses are askew and the lenses foggy, cheeks ruddy and smile boyish. The sight makes your eyes wide and you feel the same smugness he so often shows for the first time tonight.
âGetting ahead of myself, arenât I?â He laughs airily. âYouâre just so sweet I canât help it, darling.â
Mimicking his cheery laugh you turn away from him as bashfulness bubbles up in your chest. You can feel his spit on your lips and it makes you dizzy, mind slowly but surely fogging over with lust. His hand settles back on your jaw while you catch your breath, a light touch that now seems to hover patiently. You can hear his expensive watch ticking with his hand so close to your ear and it only scrambles your mind more.
âI donât mind.â You utter after a moment, leaning into his touch and lifting your head. He immediately locks eyes with you, pupils blown and murky with something lying within.
âYou donât?â Bruceâs voice falls deeper, raspy with his asking.
You shake your head and find yourself unable to break the fierce eye contact. You could swear that a spark bounces between you, something unseen but palpable, perhaps even undeniable.
His hand falls away from your waist as he reaches to remove his glasses, folding them neat and discarding them on the neighbouring seat.
Thereâs a shift, his gaze far more intense without the obstruction. He favours your thigh now instead as fingertips nudge underneath the hiked up fabric of your dress and grope at supple flesh. They rest like they belong there, squeezing experimentally.
âGood.â He hums, low, satisfied. âWouldnât want to scare you off now, would I?â
Another laugh, short lived but earnest with your nervousness boiling over.
âIt would take a lot more than that.â One of your hands slides off of his shoulder and down his chest, palm pressed flush against toned musculature. Despite his cool demeanor his heart is racing just as fast as yours, thundering beneath your touch.
âThatâs what I like to hear.â
Heâs back on you in an instant but maintains his composure this time around. His kiss is teasing and brisk, making you shudder as the chaste exchange does little to satiate the way heâs got you wound up already.
You know heâs doing it purposefully when you feel his pleased smile and your little whinge of protest only makes him worse. Pausing a breath between each slow kiss he tortures you with his sudden leisure, touch drifting from your jaw to your neck.
It forces your hand, spurring you on to chase him and press deeper into the kiss in search of what you ache for.
A low huff hits your lips when you reach and tug his tie, desperate hands seeking to urge him closer. His shoulders leave the back seat as he leans deeper in answer to your command and the leather creaks with the shift of your bodies. It makes your head spin, having not anticipated the way he bends to your wishes so gladly, emboldening you all the more.
Your breath hitches when his hands take purchase on your hips, one over your dress and one pushing further under it. With a steady grip he pulls you flush against him, hips to hips, and you shiver when he very intentionally guides you to grind over his lap.
A shy, unbidden moan escapes the back of your throat. You can feel him beneath you, a hard, heavy warmth that nudges your thigh as he rocks your body into his.
His doting deviates away from your lips, open mouthed kisses along the line of your jaw that drift down the column of your throat. A shaky breath tumbles from your mouth and you tip your head back to accommodate and encourage him.
Without thinking you begin to rut down against his lap, pliable in his hands and following his lead as if urged to. Bruce easily slows and lets you take over with your newfound fervor driving you.
Itâs as if heâs been showing you precisely what he wants and guiding you to do it, wordlessly asking by planting the seed and pushing to advance the exchange.
First, the kiss. He was heedless and unabashed, immediately looking to dash decorum that had kept you at arms length when he first found you and instead make way for prurient curiosity. Then, his touches. His hands search your body like they know it already, brazenly exploring and searching for soft skin, mapping out the shape of you. Thereâs no time to be proper or reticent, no need either.
Bruce simply needed to show you that, show you what you can have and encourage you to seek it out, invite you to match his ardour.
Biting your bottom lip you find your breathing becomes more ragged as you beg to chase the sensation thatâs shaking you. Itâs like a fire starting low in your gut, embers steadily coming to life that make you hot from head to toe. But itâs not enough friction.
His lips pepper a generous slew of kisses over your collarbone, nipping testingly and seeing what kind of rise he can get out of you. All the while youâre panting above him.
His hand under your dress shifts, making a path from your hip over the top of your thigh, fingers rolling around to the inside and resting by your bikini line. The pad of his thumb barely nudges you, a featherlight drag over your underwear.
It sends a searing spark bouncing up your skin.
You gasp and your hand flies to reactively grab his wrist, lithe fingers wrapping around the line of his pulse. His touch stills.
âYou okay?â Bruce rasps against your skin, hovering at the base of your throat. With bated breath he watches you swallow a gulp and nod a strained âmhm. But he stays frozen for another maddening moment before pulling back.
âNeed to hear you say it.â He says flatly, meeting your eyes with an immobilising gaze as he sits back. âCan you do that for me?â
Your momentum is halted and it dizzies you for a moment, pausing to gather yourself. âYes.â You choke out with a dazed look about you.
Your eyes flicker to his lips and you slowly let go of his wrist, thumb gliding along the pulse point there for the satisfaction of feeling it thunder when you say; âTouch me. Please, I need it. I need more.â
A grin takes over his features, wicked with satisfaction.
âMore?â He croons. Turning his palm to the sky he picks back up with torturously drawn out movements. Your dress is more like a belt as he pushes further beneath it and forces it to gather above your hips, leaving you open to him. With eyes on you he cups the bump of your cunt over your underwear, middle two fingers gingerly grazing a line over dampened fabric.
âMore.â You nod ardently. With a roll of your hips you try to press down into his palm but his other hand on your waist keeps you held how he wants you, stuck still in place.
âPlease.â You repeat, a weaker voice and shakier breaths.
Bruce hums like contemplating your pleas, kiss bitten lips smirking.
The pad of his thumb barely skims over your clit, light enough it could be mistaken for an accident, but the way heâs observing you now tells you it wasnât. Nothing is an accident with him. Heâs very meticulous, learning your body and responding in kind to what your reactions give away to him. Youâre putty in his hands.
A small, shuddering sound escapes you and your eyes close instinctively. Youâre wound so tight that frustration begins to make a home with you and youâre biting your tongue in order to not whinge at every fleeting sensation he offers you. But he can feel it how tense you are, see it in how your jaw is clenched. His pity is your liberator.
Two fingers press heavier, rubbing you through your underwear and teasing the wet spot thatâs gathered there. The fire in your gut flickers and eyes close tighter, face scrunched and chest heaving. Hot breath fills the car and the windows begin to fog.
âEyes on me.â His thumb comes back and nudges tentatively, drawing loose circles that have you arching with anticipation. Static thrums beneath his fingertips, it warms your skin and steals your breath, taking you a moment to concede.
Blinking bleary eyes open you find him staring, ink drop pupils trained on your face.
âThere you go.â
Lithe fingers push sodden cotton by the wayside and his middle draws a line up the centre of your cunt, spreading you open and gathering a wet pearl on the pad of his finger. You shudder deeply and your hands fly to his shoulders, bunching up luxury fabric in clawing at his blazer. He doesnât seem to mind.
Steely eyes never once leave your own as he begins to toy with you. Smearing the wetness he finds you sat in he returns his attentions to your clit, rubbing loose rings. His touch is much firmer, purposeful, as he begins to dote on the sensitive bud.
You fold with the force of it, head hanging down as you grit your teeth around a sharp moan you struggle to bite back. Bruce clicks his tongue but his ministrations donât still.
Shockwaves rove up your skin like electricity making bouncing connections that wrack you from head to toe. It comes on fast, facing the brunt of your frustration head on and amplifying each sensation. But it already begins to feel like bliss.
With thumb replacing his finger Bruce steadily works you open, easing the tension out of your body and coaxing you to be pliable in his lap. His other hand migrates from your waist to your stomach, trailing up, up, until heâs brushing his fingers along the bottom curve of your breasts. He pushes gently, a steadying touch that sits you up right so he can see you properly.
Your neck cranes, your mouth slightly ajar, and he smiles a particularly cloying smile when heâs got your focus back.
You expect him to speak, to croon a sweet something thatâs equally smug. But he just bites his lip and brings his middle finger back to your weeping cunt, shallowly nudging and teasing your hole.
The emptiness suddenly becomes glaringly urgent, a chasmal nagging low in your gut that aches to be soothed. You squirm, your thighs burning to keep yourself seated still.
âPlease.â Is all you can manage through a gulp. He can see the desperation in your half lidded eyes, feel it in your fingertips pitting into his shoulders. His gaze shifts to something contemplative, an unsure brow.
âPlease, Bruce.â Your voice comes splintered by a whine, kiss swollen lips almost daring to frown.
âFuck.â Bruce surges forward, a strong arm wrapping around your waist as his chin comes level with your collarbone, hot breaths rolling over the hollow of your throat. Slowly, oh so slowly, he pushes his finger inside you, crooking ever so slightly at each knuckle until seated.
âYouâre irresistible, you know that?â
The shy moan you let out rumbles beneath his lips as he peppers delicate kisses down your neck, overwhelming your senses and wasting no time in beginning to pump his finger. He barely pulls back, working steady and deep and delighting in the way your hips buck in response.
Frustration melts away, the sparks come alive and fire flickers low and lascivious. Itâs just the beginning but it already feels so good and youâre wrapped up in the heat of it all. His cologne engulfs you, spicy and sharp and perhaps dizzying, or maybe thatâs the soft press of his lips searching your neck for that tender spot he knows will make you shout out for him.
Once he finds it heâs a headache.
You shudder deeply when his lips drag over the soft spot and he zeroes in on it, open mouthed kisses sullying your skin with a hint of tongue to soothe. Your mind is hazy, thoughts thrown somewhere else, extent to which you donât realise his ring finger teasing alongside his middle until heâs pushing in hurriedly.
Choking out a ragged moan you again grit your teeth and tense involuntarily. Itâs a welcome intrusion but his fingers are larger than your own and noticeably so as it takes you a second to let out the shivering breath you found yourself holding. But now heâs got you right where he wants you.
Itâs not a rush but Bruce doesnât waste time, fucking you on his fingers and keeping the best pace he can muster without getting selfish. You welcome him easily, rivulets of arousal running over his knuckles with each pump inside you, slick and soft and so ready for him. He can't get enough.
You make him want to be selfish.
Picking back up those languid circles he again bullies your clit beneath the tip of his thumb, this time aided by the wetness spread over you that makes a mess of you both.
His name slides off your tongue, over and over again in increasing volume as he picks up the pace of both fingers and thumb. Your eyes water, lash line beaded damp, and the ripples of pleasure begin to pool something tight in your gut.
Deft fingers strike deep and rhythmic and at a seconds notice he curls them, seeking and soon finding the sweet spot nestled inside you. Your body jolts, you throw your head back, and an unflattering cry escapes your throat.
âFuck!â Itâs right by his ear when your head drops again and he groans against your skin, shuddering as the beautiful sound rings in his ears. Teeth graze and lips suck at your neck, a particularly sharp suck before he parts in order to get a good look at you, taking in your undone state.
Youâre trembling. You donât realise it but he does and cradles you tighter, muttering strings of praise to get you through.
âThatâs it.â Bruce coaxes, timbre low and thick with lust. âJust like that. Youâre doing so good, sweetheart.â
The fire burns blue, all encompassing and ardent as it soars brighter with each passing second. With every upsurge of his pace youâre feeling the knot tie low in your stomach, tantalising but harsh with how it makes your legs quake and breaths short.
The strike of his fingers is unabating and he draws increasingly tighter rings with his thumb, never sloppy and always blissfully precise. Your nails are in his suit, if you had the mind to think youâd worry about damaging it but thereâs nothing in your head other than the heat of his hand, the puddle that has been smeared to the crease of your thighs, and the cord pulled taut that signals your approaching climax.
âBruce,â You whine, broken and breathy. âI-I think Iâm gonnaââ
He sits back hurriedly and levels you with a dazed stare, nodding like encouraging you with actions never once letting up or faltering.
âGo on.â He grunts. âThatâs it. Thatâs right.â
You screw your eyes shut, body thrumming with red hot anticipation that hurtles you towards the edge. Youâre whining, panting, grinding down into Bruceâs hand all up until youâre sent falling into your orgasm.
A screaming moan is pulled from your chest and you collapse in on yourself with the force of it. It cascades over you in a blistering wave, seizes agency of your legs as you shake through it, and thereâs nothing you can do but ride it out.
Through the fog you can hear Bruce croon fondly and faintly. His hand slows but doesnât stop, guiding you through the high of nerve-numbing bliss. You canât stop the trembling when you slowly come back down, slumping your head onto his shoulder with hands braced on his biceps.
âThere you go.â Bruce rasps, kissing at your hairline as his free hand sweeps up and down your back. Itâs surprisingly sweet and grounding. âGod, youâre beautiful, that was beautiful.â
You hiss as he withdraws his fingers, your wetness running sticky all down them and into his palm. He doesnât mind one bit, though, as he spreads the gush of your orgasm just to hear your overwhelmed whinge right by his ear.
âSorry, darling.â He isnât.
Watching as his hand comes away from under your dress you see the sheen on his skin, sitting yourself up as he brings the two digits to his tongue. You almost feel inclined to look away but you canât, mind hazy and transfixed on everything about him. It makes you flush warm as he hums and pulls sullied fingers from his mouth, his spit replacing your slick. You bite your lip.
âFuck, thatâs good.â His voice is gravelly, timbre deep, and he huffs with amusement. Licking his lips with a small dart of his tongue he pauses to muse, eyes sweeping you up and down before ultimately landing between your legs.
âOh shut up.â You finally manage, words finding you again.
His head shoots up. âHm?â
Nervous laughter rolls off your tongue, shoulders quaking with giddy mirth. Heâs got that bemused look again, incredulous, and sharp brows crease in the middle.
âWhat? Do you think I donât mean it?â Itâs lighthearted but you can hear the lilt of challenge, the suggestion of a point to prove.
âWellââ
âBecause I do.â He doesnât waste a second. âI can even show you how much I mean it.â
âYeah?â
âYeah. Give me your hand.â
Itâs not as if you were genuinely harbouring any self doubt in this moment, your mind too scrambled to even consider it, but if you were it all wouldâve melted away.
With a domineering grip Bruce guides you to palm him through his trousers, hard cock twitching the second your touch grazes him. Your breath hitches in your throat and your words die on your tongue, mouth going dry and face burning hot.
Fingertips trace the outline of him, rubbing with the heel of your palm and shuddering at the way he groans a throaty sigh. Heâs straining against the fabric and between the weight of his cock in your hand and the way he holds your touch against him you notice the ache creep back in almost immediately.
Desire. It bubbles up inside and fills you with an ardent, commanding need. The same type of urgent lust thatâs afflicting Bruce.
âSee?â He stares, trying to catch your eye but you donât look away from the tent in his pants. âYouâre really getting to me, driving me crazy.â
Your eyes deviate to his belt, as does your other hand.
âCan I?â
His hands withdraw to make way for you, idle at his sides. âPlease do.â
The leather snaps against itself as you hurry to pull it loose and the clink of the buckle seems to ring in your ears. You donât bother to pull it free from the belt loops, instead hastily unfastening the trouser button and rushing down the zip. Then you push your hand beneath the clothing.
As Bruce tips his head back with a groan you see his adams apple leap, the sound rich and rewarding. You run your thumb along his cock over white briefs, silently gasping a breath when you find a small but noticeable wettish patch by the tip. You rub at it and feel his cock jump at your touch. It makes brisk heat roll over you in a shiver, molten down your spine.
He clears his throat and levels an indiscernible look at you. âTeasing me now, hm? I suppose itâs only fair.â
Pulling his dress shirt free from beneath the waistband he rucks it up around his waist, a peek of happy trail and a surprisingly defined v-line gracing your eyes. He notices you stare but you donât get the privilege of seeing any more than that.
âBut I really canât wait any longer, sweetheart.â
Thumbs push beneath both briefs and trousers and usher them down his hips just enough, no more than is necessary to fist his cock out from its confines. Your eyes flicker from his eyes down to where he slowly strokes himself, spit pooling in your mouth as he spreads the sheen of precum over the ruddy tip, and you hear him huff a chuckle thatâs all air through the nostrils.
âMe either.â You mutter, forcing yourself back to his eyes and meeting him with a glassy gaze. He smiles, surprisingly sweet, and looks at you fondly.
âYeah?â
âYeah.â
Bruce leans in to kiss you but the hunger he displayed before is nowhere to be found. Itâs a chaste peck, soft to an almost startling extent. You go to lean in, to chase him for something headier, but heâs already pulling away and leaning his forehead against yours.
âJust give me a second then, darling.â
With brief difficulty he shucks his blazer off, freed of the fabric that had been stifling him as the heat in the car had risen. Uncharacteristically, he doesnât fold it, just sort of screws it up and ditches it on the seat with his glasses. But not before reaching into the pocket for a recognisably square packet.
It occurs to you to roll your eyes, click your tongue or have any quick witted thing to say because of course he keeps a condom, if not a couple, sat waiting in his blazer pockets. But you donât care enough to poke at him for it, because today itâs worked to your advantage. Besides, thereâs barely any thoughts left between your ears at this point, too blinded by the oneiric bliss thatâs within your reach.
He makes quick work of it, youâd expect no less, and the foil is abandoned somewhere on the floor of the car.
âReady?â Bruce asks gently, eyes searching yours for any forthcoming hesitance. But there is none. You nod and smile coyly, hands taking purchase on his shoulders while one of his takes you by the waist.
You hum a terse âmhmâ and let him guide you into position. Weak legs strain a subtle burn as you sit up, hips forward and hovering above his, anticipation eliciting goosebumps down your arms. With his free hand he makes sure your underwear is suitably pulled to the side before encouraging your hips down, pausing when his cockhead nudges your cunt and you shudder deeply.
âLet me hear you say it, sweetheart.â He drawls. âYou know how this goes.â
You canât help the frustrated groan you let out, head slumping forward and you scoff, unbelieving.
âCâmon, Bruce.â His name falling from your lips, exasperated but still sweet in your way, tugs at him more than heâd like to admit. âYou know you want this, too.â It doesnât sound half as confident as youâd like, mousey if anything, but it does the job.
âOf course.â He smirks, canines biting his bottom lip. âBut I want you to tell me how much you want it, too.â
His fist wraps around the base of himself to guide and again he drags his tip over your cunt. Itâs slow, teasing, and sets a spark bouncing up your skin thatâs torturously tantalising. You moan quietly behind closed lips and rock your hips forward to chase the motion.
âBruce,â You begin, hand trailing down his chest with nails barely grazing. You watch him suppress a shiver that emboldens you.
Fingers wrap around the luxury black tie he wears and with a tug heâs brought forward until your lips are level, your tepid breaths fanning over his sharp cupidâs bow.
âFuck me, please? I thought thatâs all you wanted?â
Dark brows keen up and his mouth falls ajar, bravado dying on his tongue. You wait in the silence and keep him pinned with a begging stare, eyes wide and hopeful, pupils darkened and blown.
Another drag has you both tense as he lines up at your entrance, the hand on your waist encouraging you to ease downward. His grip keeps him steady as you comply and begin to sink down onto his cock, the fat head bullying inside you as you hiss through gritted teeth and screw your eyes shut.
âBut, for the record,â Bruce grunts, words bristling over your lips. âIf I were to be so lucky, Iâd want an awful lot more than just this.â
âWhaââ
Youâre left without a second to process his words as he greedily snaps his hips upwards while continuing to tug you down, forcing his cock to seat deep inside as your bodies become flush, hands now squeezing your hips with an iron grip.
âFuck!â You gasp, tears pricking at the corners of your eyes and nails again digging into his shirt-clad shoulder.
The sting throbs, not impossible but not yet comfortable as you try to get used to the stretch. Itâs not subtle, at all, it feels like heâs split you open but it stokes the fire within you so thoroughly. Thereâs a fullness about it that's hot in the gut and without so much as meaning to youâre rolling your hips in search of the sensation.
He groans but doesnât interfere, staring down at where your bodies meet and reaching to slacken his tie, unfastening the shirt's top button that seems to choke him. The windows have long turned foggy, the temperature in the car a stark difference to the bitter night outside and neither of you care to remember where you are.
âThere you go.â He croons. âJust like that. Good girl.â
The praise goes straight to your cunt and you squeeze around him, earning a chesty moan that rumbles free from his throat. You pick up a more confident pace as you grind on him and your hips stutter with the exertion, but the sting is slowly melting away with each rut forward and turning into something fervid.
He notices your expression relax, monitoring your reactions until your face is no longer scrunched and your mouth falls open with strings of whines so hushed they barely reach his ears. You wrap his tie around your first and yank as if holding yourself up on it. Bruce canât help but to smile cloyingly.
âDoes that feel good, sweetheart?â He hums, honeyed and sickly saccharine, almost tipping toward mocking. âMaking yourself feel good on my cock, yeah?â
âOh godââ You mutter beneath your breath, the best answer heâs going to get.
Hands on your hips begin to slowly raise you up just a fraction, barely an inch before bringing you back down. But it sets off a whole other shockwave. It starts light, raises the hair on the back of your neck, but elicits fiery flickers low in the body where that pooling of lust sits.
With commanding touches Bruce bounces you on his cock, steadily working faster, bringing you higher, until youâre left with barely the tip before he slams you back down and seats himself fully inside you. Itâs bliss for both. Every stroke gets easier as he works you open even more and your dripping arousal spreads a mess on both of you, making it easy for him to slip inside with every motion.
Lewd, wet noises start to echo already but youâve no mind to be embarrassed about it, too wrapped up in every slap of skin to care. You have to wonder if the car is rocking, unsure if thatâs what youâre feeling or if itâs just all Bruce, but you could swear you feel the back of the car jounce.
You let yourself be moved by him, arching your back and biting your bottom lip hard when he begins to snap his hips up to the same rhythm.
It sends bolts of electricity running through you, a bone deep, nerve sizzling pleasure that fills your body. The heat curls low and wet, all encompassing and distracting. It seems to block out the world around you, everything but Bruce, no concept of time or place, nothing.
Or so it seemed.
Your heart jumps a frog in your throat and you stiffen up, head snapping to the side.
From outside of the car suddenly comes an awful lot of chatter. The drunkenness is apparent from both the volume of the voices and the way the words spoken sort of slur together, many drawn out and others said wrongly. The people holler and giggle, you hope just passing through the car park, filtering out of the venue, but it makes you unsteady.
Bruce groans at the sound of them, unbothered if not inconvenienced, but notices the way it startles you. His hips slow, but donât stop, and one of his hands comes up to cup your jaw and coax you to face him.
âYou okay?â He asks carefully. âDoes that bother you?â
Your eyelids flutter, torn between resting closed as ripples of pleasure still grip you or snapping wide open and trying to check behind you.
Eventually, you give a small nod. âCan they see us?â
Only then does Bruce go still, leaning forward and attempting a glance through the steamed up windows, then over your shoulder at the windscreen. Nothing. He sits back and shakes his head.
âNope. If I canât see them, they canât see us. Is that okay?â
âBut the carââ
âSuspensionâs good, âpromise.â
You arenât quite satisfied with that answer and he can see it in the knit between your brows. His thumb sweeps soothing over your cheek and he leans in close, a gentle, tender kiss that stays pure for a moment.
âCome on, sweet thing.â He coos, timbre low and velvety. âIâve got you, itâs alright.â
Slow and testing he starts again with his hips, barely rocking and encouraging you to ease back into a steady rhythm. You let your eyes close and lean your sweat dewy forehead to his, sighing shaky before you nod.
âThatâs it.â Another kiss, reassurance and coaxing. âItâs just me and you, yeah?â
The dulcet âyeahâ you huff against his lips is all he needs to allow himself to pick the speed back up, this time holding you still and focussing on thrusting up to meet you. Itâs even easier than before and your body immediately gives in to whatever he makes of you. Your inhibitions gradually melt away again, brain enveloped in that same haze that allows your salacious side to take the helm, worries assuaged and desires reignited.
You slump your head onto his shoulder and your hands brace on his stomach, fingertips curled to claws that bunch up his shirt. He scoffs a laugh and his dominant hand comes down between your bodies, seeking the bump of your cunt and immediately zeroing in on your clit.
A hot jolt surges through you and you arch with a choked moan of his name falling free. Your ears begin to ring, every grunt and groan he lets out bouncing around inside your head and boring a way into your memory.
More voices pass by but you donât allow yourself to care, forcing focus on the heat of his body, the snap of his hips, and the calloused pad of his thumb. He reintroduces the tight circles immediately, a heavy pressure under the tip of his thumb that bullies your poor, oversensitive bud.
âOh shit.â You squirm in his lap, fingers digging dips into his sides and you can feel his muscles tense with every upward thrust. Pressure coils in the deepest pit of your stomach, tying a taut knot that scorches with ticklish familiarity and sets off the trembling of your thighs, if it had ever really stopped.
âGod.â Bruce curses, head lolled against the back bench, chin tipped skyward. âYou feel so fucking good.â His other arm snakes around your back, hand anchored on your waist, keeping you posed perfect right where he needs you.
Again you feel the car begin to jostle, mimicking the rhythm he maintains with subtle rocking up and down on the rear wheels. Bruce either doesnât notice, or doesnât care.
Your head feels heavy with the haze and you let it take over. The fire turns blue much faster this go around, nagging more desperately with each ripple of pleasure that tears through you. Itâs funny how it makes a priority of itself, how quickly other matters are pushed to the wayside in carnal pursuit of your climax.
âBruce,â You utter meekly, words bristling against his neck where you duck. You feel him hum more than you hear it, the thrum vibrating through you.
âPlease, Iâm soââ
âMe too. Fuck. Me too.â
Resisting the weight that bears down on you, you pull back to look at him, really drinking in the disheveled state youâve brought him to. His perfect hair falls tousled from how he had it neatly styled, a couple of stray strands long enough to reach his eyes while others stick to his forehead. The shirt he wears has been creased plenty by your grabbing and his tie is much the same, loose, askew, and youâre drawn to reach for it again.
A tug and your next moan has his eyes flickering open, fierce eye contact locking you in. His jaw is tense, throat bobbing. He smiles.
âAre you going to come for me, hm?â
His voice is thick, gravelly, pulled from a throat slowly growing hoarse from each groaning utterance he lets slip. You nod urgently.
âPlease, please let me.â
The rhythm is lost, his hips stutter and with his steadfast grip he slams you down against him, the ministrations of his thumb never breaking. The heat is blistering, the knot is wound so taut it splinters, and you bite your bottom lip so hard you could pierce it.
âLet me feel it, sweetheart.â
A surge shoots bright hot up your spine and you crush in on yourself, eyes forced shut as white flashes blindingly behind closed lids. The tension snaps and your legs jerk as you briefly lose command of your muscles. Youâd be surprised if your roaring moan couldnât be heard from outside of the car.
But itâs heaven. Hot, wet heaven that gushes and squeezes around Bruceâs cock.
The shocks it sends through you is like nothing else, deep satisfaction that bounces between nerve endings and flushes your whole body with a wave of warmth. You lose yourself to it.
âYesyesyesââ
Bruce hisses through gritted teeth. His hips buck wildly and both hands grasp roughly at your waist, pulling you down and using the leverage to push him over the edge. It has you teetering on the verge of overstimulation as he slams you down once, twice, and one final time as he crashes head first into his own orgasm.
He cranes toward you with the power of it, face returning level to your collarbone and nose nudging at the base of your throat. You can feel him quaking, large thighs tensing and relaxing in quick succession as he spills into the condom and blabbers incoherently into your skin. Your nails rake up the nape of his neck into his scruffy hair, cradling the back of his head as you both roll through the high.
The world slows and the car goes still but bodies continue to shake, wracked with aftershocks in the comedown.
Then he chuckles. Not at you, not at anything, heâs giddy in the glow. Sitting back lazily against the leather bench he pulls you with him, a much softer embrace as you both gasp down breaths like panting dogs, chest heaving and hands shaking as they wrap around his neck. His touch stays resting around your waist but goes lax from the bruising grip he had, now favouring caressing up and down your sides dotingly.
âThat wasâŚâ You start but trail off for a lack of words, head spinning while you try to hold yourself up.
âMhm.â Bruce grunts, draping chaste kisses along the sharp of your jaw, the underside of your chin, anywhere he can reach. It brings you back down to earth, helps you back into your body, but keeps you blushing warm.
Steadily, you raise, guided by his hands. You both cringe when he slips out of you and you whine at the rush of cold air, features scrunching up as you startle. Dutifully, he reaches and rights your underwear back into place, regardless of the sullen state of them.
âAnd,â He says, bringing his hand between your bodies with the face of his watch angled up, still ticking away.
âI think we killed plenty of time.â
A smirk tugs at his lips, pulling the corners up with the worst smugness youâve seen of him yet, simpering sly.
âShut up.â You scoff, incredulous. But it does earn him a small laugh, that same giggle that enchanted him earlier. Bruce leans in to steal another kiss and lingers for a second longer than needed, greedy for the sweetness as your night together draws towards its end.
âIâll give you a minute. Still got to get you home, yeahâŚ?â

The mug on the coffee table is still half full but the tea it holds has long gone cold in neglect. The overhead light has been buzzing its candescence for hours without reprieve and will for the time being until someone wakes to relieve it of its duty. But the sofa cushions are warm, soft, and the blanket is wrapped around you just right.
It couldn't be helped, even though you really had tried to stay awake.
The tea was intended to be a late evening caffeine boost, less flagrant than a coffee would've been at this hour but just enough of a kick to drag out the night. Maybe it would've been if you had finished it. Or maybe you should've just had the coffee.
Though, the open book beside it worked no better as a means for staying up. And neither did the ceiling light you left on so that you could see the pages. You tried to get stuck into the story, hoping to become wrapped up in the print and fritter the hours away in a different world, oblivious to the time passing. After all, there's been many nights where you'd have to coax a book free from Bruce's hands to get him to rest. But, regrettably, your pick was too easy to put down.
Perhaps if you had asked Bruce for a recommendation you'd still be turning pages into these late hours. Perhaps if he'd been home on time you wouldn't have needed to in the first place.
In fairness, it's no fault of his own. When you're the host of the most anticipated galas Gotham can offer it's not easy to sneak away or excuse yourself from the event any time before the first a.m. You get passed between meaningless conversations, give out more modest smiles than anyone can count, and become terribly weary somewhere along the way.
This particular event had been planned for a long while now, another charity gala funded by Wayne Enterprises, as they often are. Typically you would be there at Bruce's side but there's something about the way some folk get so brazenly drunk at a charity event of all things that stops you from going. You don't have the same patience for them that Bruce does, not after a certain point.
But youâd been missing him that bit extra tonight, feeling far too aware of his absence through the afternoon and evening, and so you thought it would be a good idea to stay up and wait for him to get home. He had told you that he hoped to be back any time between one and two a.m. which didnât seem too unreasonable, or too difficult to wait out.
But you had already started yawning when two turned to three, and sometime between three turning to four you dropped off.
You didnât mean for it when you stretched your legs down the length of the couch. Or when you pulled the fleecy blanket up around your shoulders. Not even when you laid your head into the throw pillows and slouched to lie down flat. But regardless of intention a tired body pulled an equally tired mind down into slumber, and in a half asleep state you could only hope that Bruce would see and appreciate your efforts.
The wall clock reads four thirty seven when he finally reaches home, though it canât be read in the complete darkness that weaves through every room. Or rather, most of them.
Bruce is hardly thinking of much else as muscle memory brings him down the corridors, ready to leave his formal wear in a heap on the floor and clamber into silken bed sheets, ready to lie at your side and draw your sleeping self into his arms. But the slither of warm light that sneaks beneath the sitting room door interrupts his musing, waking him somewhat.
Approaching slowly he knocks once, then twice with the knuckle of his index finger, finding the door left ajar as it pushes a slight further open. He waits for a second, hearing nothing, then curiously pushes the rest of his way in.
The overhead light is a sharp shift by comparison to the corridors steeped in darkness, but with a couple of heavy blinks and a grumble Bruceâs eyes adjust. At first glance he sees nothing, no one, as the back of the couch is faced toward where he stands in the doorway. However, he knows itâs atypical for something like that to be missed. Because if you had neglected to flick the light off on your way out, Alfred wouldâve surely caught it before he retired for the night as well.
At least he thinks thatâs right. Given the lateness of the hour, he starts to doubt his reasoning.
Bruce clears his throat with a cough as if to make himself known in the room and steps around the side of the sofa, hand gliding idly across the back of the cushions.
Heâs not quite past the arm when he spots you.
Youâre laying on your side with your face turned towards the couch cushions, the blanket is balled up in your fists that nestle under your chin and your knees are tucked up in order to comfortably fit the length of the seat. The mug is still half full, wobbling on the edge of a coaster, and your book is left lying open, face down, text to table.
The rush of adoration floods Bruceâs mind, leaving the tips of his ears and highs of his cheeks warm with a blush. Itâs a pleasant surprise, one that makes his heart skip a beat. He's so glad to see you that for a moment it doesnât occur to him how strange it is to find you down here rather than upstairs, cosied up in bed.
He waits for a moment, breath held and hands still, to see if you stir. You donât. From this angle he can just barely see the rise and fall of your chest as you breathe steady and sleepy, a heartwarming image of serenity.
He pushes a patient sigh out through his nose and paces around the side of the coffee table, steps far slower than they were a couple minutes prior. Thumb tucked underneath to save the page he picks up the book by its spine and scans the rest of the table for your bookmark, unsurprised to find it slung to the opposite corner with little care. He tucks it in along the page join and sets the book down closed.
Suddenly, things start to make a little bit more sense.
Bruceâs eyes canât help but to land on you again as he looks up, a boyish smile pulling his lips thin. He had thought, hoped, that you might try to stay awake and wait for him to come home. Suspicion was raised when he was half way out of the front door, his arm around your waist and lips pressing a gentle kiss to your temple with a whispered promise of âsee you in the morningâ.
But rather than an echo saying the same he got a shy âsee you laterâ in response that couldâve made him late had he contested you on it.
Instead of pushing it he left with the suspicion sitting quietly yet prominently at the back of his mind. Though it did make him talk a little faster, cut some banal conversations short and excuse himself from others' company when they tried to garner his attention. Not that it did any good in the end.
He thinks about calling your name, or rather whispering it, an intrusion into the roomâs quiet just to see if it reaches you in your slumber. Bruce shakes his head, maybe not. Instead he brings himself to your side, half hunched and hovering over you, and softly shakes your shoulder.
âSweetheart?â He nudges, voice hushed and dulcet.
You donât budge but your breathing stutters and for a second he thinks you might rouse. It makes him oddly nervous, the realisation hitting that he may have to disturb you from what looks to be such a comfortable rest. His hand slides down your arm to your bicep, resting and drumming his fingers there thoughtfully.
He shouldnât wake you, the night has progressed too far already, it isnât reasonable to unsettle you at this hour. But leaving you by yourself for the night, on the couch of all places, feels just as rude to him. Especially since you had been waiting for him, presumably.
Bruce scrubs his hands over his face and sighs, conflicted. The scales weigh even with differing guilt.
âAlright.â He mutters to himself. âWeâre going to head up to bed, okay?â And now to you.
Thereâs a moment of hesitation, a split second spent strategizing before appreciating that thereâs only one approach he can really take here. Bruce wedges one hand between the sofa cushion and your shoulder, his arm draped across your back, and the other steadily hooks under the bend of your knees. As carefully as he can manage he crouches slightly to scoop you up into a bridal carry, cradled comfortably in his arms.
Your head falls to rest against his chest with a dull thump but your eyelids twitch and features screw up with recognition. Bruce swallows a nervous gulp and waits with breath held once more, gaze downcast to watch you closely.
The crease between your eyebrows remains when you squint, your eyes barely open.
The nervousness returns and Bruce keeps his voice down as best he can in his hurry to apologise. âSorry, darling.â He begins remorsefully, consciously masking a frown. âI didnât mean to disturb you.â
The velvety timbre of his voice sounds so far away through the haze of your sleepy reverie, though each word seems to become louder than the last the more you rouse. As he speaks he begins a steady path out of the sitting room, bumping the light switch off with his arm as you leave and finally silencing its droning buzz. Relieved at last.
âThough,â He continues, glad to see your eyes fall closed again not a second later. âIâm sure you understand that I couldnât leave you by yourself for the night. Especially not downstairs.â His voice falls quieter as you go, walking you down adjacent halls swallowed by half shadow and splinters of moonlight that slither their way in through curtain gaps on ceiling height windows.
Each step Bruce takes sways you gently, a very subtle, rhythmic movement that grapples to keep you soothed and anchor you down in your rest. But at the same time each tread of his socks on the carpet makes you increasingly aware of your surroundings. The echo of his footfalls, his arm around your back, the flickering of the light passing over your closed eyelids.
But itâs the pull of his aroma that gets you.
Itâs subconscious more than anything, a deeper recognition that lingers for a few moments before its significance lands. Itâs a subtle spiciness at first, the kick of an expensive cologne that tries to mute all else. But it isnât quite successful. Under it all is the cling of the manor.
Itâs hard to pinpoint. Thereâs a homeyness to it, itâs unbidden, something that always has been rather than something introduced with intention or purpose. You can never be sure if itâs the fabric conditioner Alfred uses for most things or if itâs shampoo Bruce relies upon, the scent of which never dulls. Regardless, whatever it is follows Bruce like a shadow.
And on patrol nights, robbed of time by the demand of duty, itâs that subconscious awareness of this undefinable shadow that tells you heâs home. Heâs an expert at sneaking in, of course. Thereâs no thud of heavy boots hitting the floor or slamming doors to alert you, itâs all more practised than that. Instead, when he joins you under the sheets you notice the shift in the air and the cologne carried on it. It always reaches you, and tonight is no different despite the circumstance.
âHere we are.â Bruce clears his throat to announce, walking you into the master bedroom. He brings you to your side of the bed and carefully lays you down atop the covers, the fleece blanket from the couch falling away from you somewhat as his hands slip away. But he hastily wraps it back around you upon noticing.
âSorry again for waking you, sweetheart.â The apology comes automatically when he notices you groggily rubbing your eyes with the heels of your palms and stretching your legs out with a breathy groan. The trip upstairs felt like it had barely taken a second, and it takes you a moment to get your bearings.
âSâokay.â You manage through a yawn, getting comfortable against the pillow and blinking up at him. The sweet sound of your voice filling his ears reassures the part of him that was feeling guilty, assuaging the worry that came with it. The rush returns to him, a deep seated infatuation that makes his face flush with red warmth. He really is glad to see you after the night heâs had.
Bruce smiles brightly, keening down and pressing a kiss to your forehead where he lingers for a moment, tepid breath bristling over your skin when he hums.
âWhat were you doing there anyway?â He asks idly, somewhat sure heâd figured out the answer anyhow.
âHm?â You roll over to watch as he paces around to his side of the bed and switches on the lamp that sits on the nightstand. The space immediately around him floods with a short reaching, golden glow that brings focus to the tiredness etched into his features. It pulls at your heart a little bit.
âIn the sitting room. Itâs not like you to fall asleep on the couch. Or anywhere but the bed.â Bruce takes a step back and pulls loose his tie, craning his neck as he does so and ditching the unfastened article on the floor. You ogle the way the light drapes over him, half listening and half asleep.
He shoots you a patient yet quizzical look that brings you back to the conversation.
âOh, uh.â You stammer, sitting up a bit and pulling the blanket away from yourself. âWell, I thought youâd be home sooner, so.â
The words âlike you promisedâ linger thickly in the air. Neither of you comment on it. But you both know.
You shrug, continuing. âI was going to wait for you to get back. Guess I fell asleep.â Shuffling up the bed you drop the couch blanket off the edge where it heaps on the floor with a thump, tucking your feet beneath the proper bedsheets. Bruce looks up at the sound.
âGuess you did.â He retorts lightly, a half smile pulling his lips. He somewhat hurries to unbutton his dress shirt and shuck it off his shoulders, carelessly leaving it in the same pile as the tie where they will gather creases all night long. His trousers and socks are quick to follow, abandoned with the same carelessness.
You both pull at the silky bedsheets, with you shimmying down to get yourself properly underneath them and Bruce pulling his corner back to make a way in. He sits first, reaches to turn the lamp off and check the time on the alarm clock, and lies down at your side once the room plunges into darkness.
The bed creaks a complaint as you both situate yourselves, fluffing pillows and turning left then right until you find the right dip in the mattress to hold you. And when you finally find that perfect spot youâre left facing one another, close enough that your shallow breaths tickle his top lip. A heavy sigh escapes him.
âIâm sorry, darling. Itâs easy to lose track of time in there.â Bruce grumbles, gruff and overtired.
âThatâs okay. Youâre here now.â You reach for him in the pitch black, hands finding his broad shoulders and caressing over and around his back. The chill of your touch elicits a shiver from him as you lock your fingers together at his nape.
âMhm, I am.â In truth it still catches him off guard. Itâs not that he expects you to be upset, to face your back to him or let it all pile up in a long-standing grudge. No, but he might never get used to how forgiving you are.
It occurs to him that maybe itâs because he doesnât feel he deserves the patience you show him. Not with the mind numbing events that run overtime every time, not with The Bat, not with any of it. Or equally because itâs one of those qualities that donât come around him very often. Heâs never found it in anyone but you and wasnât sure how to react, act accordingly, and sometimes he still doesnât.
But so long as you forgive him, he can forgive himself too.
Bruceâs hands gravitate towards you like yours did him, taking purchase on your sides with fingertips pressing eagerly. He pulls you towards him with ease and wraps his strong arms around you, selfishly occupying your space and holding you tight so you canât shuffle away. Not that you would anyway.
But you can feel the urgency in his embrace and from it guess whatâs running through his head. âI would've been okay, you know. The couch is more pleasant than it looks.â You reassure one more time for good measure, carding a hand into his dark hair and smiling when he lets out a pleased, relaxed sigh.
âAnd I wouldnât.â His voice falls deeper, timbre tugged by lethargy. âI donât get much rest without you at my side.â
An airy giggle bubbles up out of your chest, heart warmed by the notion. âInsomniac.â You scoff, throwing a leg over his hip and kissing his cheek softly. You can feel the smile that pulls at his features, skin flushing hot beneath your affections.
âMaybe.â The sheets shift with the shrug of his shoulders.
Silence falls, eyes close, and everything slows down into a well deserved serenity. Bruce listens to the soft lull of your breathing and feels his head get so very heavy, a night of socialising with ignorance and fortune all while keeping up appearances catching up to him all at once. It drains more energy than it's ever worth. You do right by staying home.
âDo you have to get up early in the morning?â You whisper regrettably, wondering if you need to anticipate another unwelcome wake up. Bruce groans and holds you closer, tucking his face against the junction of your neck and shoulder, words rumbling across your skin.
âUgh.â He drawls, trying to recall. âI think so. Six oâclock? Maybe. Some kind of meeting.â
The regret roots deeper for his answer and you huff an objecting sigh, drumming your fingertips on his back idly. It only lulls him further.
You pout, cradling the back of his head. âNo.â
âNo?â
âNot anymore.â You decide, stubborn and already robbed of too much time. âYouâre sleeping in until at least nine oâclock, with me.â
Bruce sputters a chuckle at that, a low rumble that shakes his chest. The sound warms you, the kind of goosebumps that reward the mirth and encourage your defiance by reminding you why you do it at all. Because with Bruce you always get what you want.
He concedes as easily as youâd hoped. âHm. Wonât argue with that.â Another shrug of his shoulders and he seems to relax all the more, perhaps put at ease by the idea of a lazy morning at your side.
Moments like these are valuable, more so than anything material Bruce has to his name. Theyâre reprieves, reminders as to why he goes out and does all the many things that demand to occupy his time. Because you reward him with the chance to quiet his racing thoughts, bring his defences down and give him a sense of normalcy that he doesnât find anywhere else. Thereâs nothing else that matters here, not his name, not his work, not his duty. Itâs just you, all you.
So if being granted even more of that means missing one measly meeting heâll gladly deal with the consequences of his apparent absence later. Hell, if it were up to him heâd miss all of his commitments if it meant more time with you. But the rarity of these true moments of peace only makes them more special, so he can live with that tradeoff. Since it isnât up to him, anyhow.
Both of your bodies go lax, untangling slightly in favour of finding a comfortable enough position to sleep in. Because as much as he would hold you this close all night long, the arm that's wedged beneath you has already gone dead, tingling with pins and needles.
Bruce hesitates to withdraw, his hand raising to cup your jaw and swipe gentle caresses across your cheek with the calloused pad of his thumb. With a hum he tips your head down slightly, just enough so he can once again leave a soft, chaste kiss on your forehead. He smiles into it, overcome with how grateful he is to have you.
âGoodnight, sweetheart.â
