Where Reigen ended up with Uu-chan and really love the small ghost dog. He's really happy about having a small companion with him all the time, making him feel so happy.
But it's not-so-slowly eating at his life energy.
"Ritsu" Shigeo had scolded lightly after the teenager had run out of their office.
"What?" his brother snapped back at him, "It was eating at him and you saw just like me how it was already taking a toll on him" he argued to defend himself.
"I don't understand why you allowed him to keep that spirit in the first place" Ritsu then pointed out.
And honestly, Shigeo wasn't too sure himself. He knew it would likely cause problems for Reigen, but he had not expected it to happen so quickly.
The teenager had looked so happy to have Uu-chan, somehow he had felt like he couldn't take it away, not yet...
"Still, you didn't have to do it in front of Reigen, you've clearly upset him, he really liked Uu-chan"
"So what? It wouldn't have happened if you had exorcised it from the start, he even gave it a stupid name" his brother pointed out, looking away when he met his brother's disapproving glance.
It had been unnecessary to do it in front of Reigen like this.
Shigeo couldn't get out of his head the way Reigen had begged Ritsu not to do it, trying to stop him from exorcising Uu-chan. He had even promised he'd find a way to not get his life sucked out of him (even though it was impossible).
But it had been no use, with only the
flick of a hand, Uu-chan was gone and Reigen was left staring at where it had been a moment before. After that, he stormed out of the office, eyes looking shinier with tears.
Shigeo took a deep breath to calm himself down, his stress having gone up from the previous situation and him trying to tell Ritsu to stop.
"I'll go check on him" he simply stated, grabbing his coat to put it back on.
"But it's still office hours..." Ritsu started, before quieting down when Shigeo gave him a look. He wouldn't need to do so if Ritsu had listened when he asked him to not interfere a couple of days prior, that Shigeo would take care of it.
"We don't have any clients scheduled for the evening, I trust that you can deal with anyone coming in" he stated as he made his way to the door, "Do call me if something too big comes up".
Once outside, he paused, unsure where to look first. He knew there was a park nearby and decided to go check there first. He had taken small breaks there with him, maybe he had gone there.
It did take a while, since Reigen wasn't on any bench on tables. He instead found him hidden in the deserted playground area, inside one of the structures.
He couldn't help but feel his heart squeeze a little when he saw that Reigen was hugging his legs close to himself, face hidden in his knee while his shoulder jumped with the quiet sob he could hear.
"Arataka" he tried calling him, talking more softly than usual.
He only saw the teenager close up on himself even more, ignoring him. This made Shigeo sigh quietly, hesitating for a moment before crawling into the small space. He was obviously too big for the hiding spot, but ignore the way his legs were already cramping, sitting quietly next to the teenager.
He wasn't sure what to do now that he was here though. Ritsu was the one dealing with emotional people, since Shigeo never knew what to do.
Reigen was a people person, easily dealing with people, even if they were angry, sad or scared.
So Shigeo was left at a loss of what to do, sitting awkwardly next to his sobbing (self-proclaimed) apprentice.
after a while, he lifted his hand, hesitating for a moment, before his hand started gently patting his head, fingers carding through blond strands slowly.
"I'm sorry" he finally said, looking at the ground. "I knew Uu-chan would likely be a source of danger for your life, but I still allowed you to get used to it" he explained, "I knew we would need to exorcise it at some point and I still allowed you to get attached to Uu-chan".
He paused for a moment, sighing at the thought of his own mishandling of the situation.
"I'm sorry that I caused you to feel pained like this" he apologised again.
When he felt Reigen straighten up again he pulled back his hand, turning towards the teenager who quickly tried drying his tear with the sleeve of his uniform. "It's not Shisho's fault" he quietly said, "Ritsu was right, I was stupid to get attached to Uu-chan, to begin with".
Shigeo couldn't help but sigh at the choice of words his brother had used, shaking his head slightly.
"My brother may be a smart man, but he's not always right" he pointed out. "I know he can be harsh" he then started again, smiling a little when he heard Reigen scoff at the word he used, "But I know he did it because he was worried for you".
"Yeah right," the teenager replied, looking away to the other entry.
"I know you two don't get along," Shigeo admitted, which he would need to be blind of really oblivious not to see, "But I know deep down he doesn't want to see you harmed either and for him, doing this was probably the easiest way to keep you safe".
Silence settled between them again, Shigeo watching as Reigen was nervously playing with the laces of his shoes, looking lost in thought.
"It's still not Shisho's fault" Reigen ended up saying after a while, a little frown on his face. "I know Shisho wouldn't do something that would harm me" he then added, sounding so certain of his words, looking back at him.
"It's still me who mishandled this situation" Shigeo pointed out, to which the teen shook his head, not taking any of this.
"I know Shisho would have eventually exorcised Uu-chan" Reigen stated, "I'm sure you thought it would be alright for a while but things got out of hand quickly".
Then the Reigen offered him a little smile "But I'm still happy you allowed me to have Uu-chan for a while, it was nice to have a pet for a while" he admitted.
"It still made you sad and upset" Shigeo frowned, unsure why Reigen was so alright with it.
Reigen hummed quietly at his points, thinking. "Well... I guess it's a little like having to say goodbye to your pet because it's their time to go" he explained, "Although what happened is more like seeing your dog be hit by a car". The idea made Shigeo cringe a little not quite liking the idea, it sounded even worse.
"What I mean is" Reigen continued when he saw his master's expression shift, "Even if I was really upset when it happen, and that I am still sad now, I'll get over it, it's not as if you had killed my family or something".
Still, even with Reigen's attempt at making Shigeo feel better about the situation, he couldn't stop himself from feeling bad that he had caused him to be upset in the first place.
"Is there still something I can do to make you feel better?" he offered.
He heard Reigen sigh, even if a smile grew back on his lips quickly, before it became a little shy, not looking at him directly anymore. He seemed to hesitate for a moment, before saying "Actually, I think a hug would be really comforting, and I really liked it when you played with my hair like that," he admitted.
Shigeo didn't reply immediately, unsure what to say. He wasn't really keen on touching people in general, and it felt a bit inappropriate for him to hug his employee. But he also really wanted to help him feel better.
As Reigen was about to dismiss the idea, Shigeo replied "Of course I can" before shifting around, his back now facing the entry he had used, opening his arms.
He soon found himself with arms full of Reigen, who hugged him tightly.
The position was a bit awkward, seeing how small the space was, but they managed to settle for something semi-comfortable.
It didn't take long for him to hear some sniffling from Reigen, probably holding himself from crying.
So Shigeo held him in his arms for a moment, one of his hands carding through his hair again, waiting for the teenager to calm down. He didn't mind taking as long as it would take for him to feel better, hidden from any prying eyes.
He didn't know for how long he held Reigen in his arms like this, hand playing in his hair softly, rocking them slightly. It was already dark outside when Reigen finally let go of him, Shigeo making sure he was alright one last time before they got out of the hiding spot.
Shigeo took a moment to stretch his leg, a bit stiff from the weird position he had to keep despite his size.
"Office hours should be over now" Shigeo pointed out, "Do you want to go eat ramen?" he then offered.
He smiled softly when he saw the way it immediately lightened up Reigen's mood, giving him an obvious positive answer.
"We'll pass by the office to pick up your bag and then we will go eat" he stated.
With that they made their way to the office, Shigeo feeling a lot calmer than before now that he saw Reigen feeling better.
