Amy had been sick in bed for a long while now, and she could tell her husband was starting to get nervous. Sure, they had both been sick before, but not like this. And not when they were so old together. They had lived into their 80s with each other, and Amy was satisfied. Her hair had grown grey and her skin wrinkled, but he still treated her as a princess. It made her feel good, and she still knew she was worth so much in her husbandâs eyes.
âJohn? Can you come in here with me?â she called out weakly from their room, and he had soon rushed in. She took his hand and pulled him gently into bed with her, not even bothering to ask. It was her time soon, and she wanted to spend it with John. Instantly, she felt his arms wrap around her waist and relaxed into him. âThank you,â she whispered, her voice weak and strained. Maybe she would be okay, maybe not. But she still wanted to talk to him.
âSo, remember that time that Rory and I were going to go on our first date, and I got all dressed up for him, and you said I looked amazing?â she asked, looking up at him. He nodded a bit, his eyebrows knitting together in confusion. He still had the same facial expressions after all these years, and they were so familiar by now.
âThat was when I first realized I loved you,â she said, her voice soft. âAnd I never stopped,â she said, holding onto him. She threaded her fingers through his own, squeezing his hand gently. Hopefully, that would be enough to keep him going. She couldnât have him giving up, and leaving this world before he was ready. Closing her eyes, her breathing slowed and soon, John couldnât feel her chest rise and fall anymore.
His tears started to fall, silently as if she was just asleep and he didnât want to wake her. However, he somehow knew that there was no way he could go on without her. âAmy, Iâm coming for you,â he said softly, his arms tightening around her before he shut his eyes as well. Soon he was fast asleep, fading into the darkness as she just had.
The next morning, Jessica was set to visit her parents. When they didnât answer the door, she set down her plate of snickerdoodles, her motherâs favorite, and pulled out her key. Her hand was shaking as she unlocked the door, and she knew this wasnât a good sign. Her mom hadnât been feeling good for a while, but she  didnât expect her to this bad. Hurrying to the back room, where Amy and John still shared the bed, she found the sight. Her mother and father, curled up in one another, looking as if they were sleeping. However, she knew that they were both gone. The room felt empty, the spirit that once inhabited it had left.
Slumping against the door, she pulled out her phone. âUncle Rory? Yes. ItâsâŚitâs Jessica. I need to talk to you about Mum and Dad,â she said, her voice shaking as a silent tear ran down her cheeks.
