Went to the Colours of Impressionism exhibit at the @artgalleryofsa today, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was an interesting collection, the focus on different uses of colour and light and how the progression of the style reflected their use. The most popular piece, as expected, was Monet's 'Water Lily Pond', people crowding around to get a view - but as wonderful as that piece was I was more drawn to pieces like 'The Magpie' (as depicted by the postcard), where the texture of the paint depicting the snow and the subtle lighting really stood out to me. It took some time for me to 'get' Impressionism, but I've come to appreciate the skill that comes with being able to depict such character and depth with strokes of paint without the need for meticulous detail. By sitting in the middle of one or two of the rooms, there are works that are better when they are seen from afar than up close, the bold strokes and even mosaic-like composition creating a striking vision. Once you see the bigger picture a closer examination of its parts would help you realise what it takes to bring such an image together.
