âSpockâs telepathic abilities: a personal headcanon
Spock has enhanced telepathic abilities(higher then the average Vulcan) he can do things other Vulcans canât do. Heâll also senses things and say itâs the tricord. Or he might not be entirely aware of them.
1. In Season 1 Episode 23, âA Taste of Armageddonâ, Spock mind melds through a wall, implying the he doesnât need physical contact to mind meld. (Quote) Kirk: Are you sure you can do it, Mister Spock? â¨Spock: Limited telepathic abilities are inherent in Vulcanians, Captain. It may work. It may not. â¨Kirk: Do your best. â¨(Spock goes to the door and begins to slowly work his way across it. Outside, the guard starts to blink and shake his head. Spock reaches the place directly behind the guard and looks as if he is doing a mind meld through the wall. Slowly, the guard opens the door and enters. He is swiftly disarmed and knocked out.) â¨Kirk: Thank you, Mister Spock. â¨Spock: My pleasure, Captain.
2. Example in season 2 episode 3, âThe Changelingâ, he mind-melded Nomad, a machine. Not something with an inherently conscious mind(at least in TOS).
3. Season 3 episode 19, âRequiem for Methuselahâ, Spock figured out what Rayna is (an android) from almost the start, and he could tell what was behind the door. Both instances without physical contact, again showing that heâs not strictly touch telepathic.â
Interesting concept! (Sorry I didnât respond earlier; I was at a cottage for the long weekend and wasnât checking social media, but it looks like @greenjimkirk had you covered and posted the same submission. I donât know if I should also post this, since itâs already out there, but I guess I will this time.) Itâs always fun to call Spock out on the fact that he claims that Vulcan telepathy is âlimited,â then proceeds to mind meld with everyone and everything under the sun, from Horta to space probe (and also, in The Omega Glory, managing to convince yet another being to follow his suggestion by the power of non-touch telepathy).Â
Of course, Spock is also so canonically a lying liar when it comes to everything regarding his life and heritage (one of his âancestorsâ married a human, hiding all other relativesâ identities until they show up, Vulcan biology, âI exaggeratedâ) that I wouldnât put much stock in his description of âlimited telepathic abilities.â Heâs probably just misrepresenting, as usual.
