100 Palettes Challenge
I want to get more active in this space, so I decided to set myself a challenge.
I inherited this book a few months ago:
"100 Years of Color" by Katie Greenwood.
Essentially, Greenwood selected a poster that was printed every year from 1900 to 1999 and put together a swatch palette of the colors in each one. It's an interesting exploration of color through the century that saw the rise of graphic design. It's also an interesting exploration of how different vibes can be achieved using the same palette just by changing which color dominates the piece.
But that's largely besides the point.
I always saw in this book an opportunity to experiment with color. By using a palette that was already picked by someone else, it could force me to think about how to use colors I wouldn't normally pick myself; save me labor of trying to choose colors when I don't always know what I want; play around with colors a professional artist chose to work together; and generally expand my creative horizons in terms of how I understand color and how it can be used.
So I want to use this book as a challenge to myself. 100 pieces of artwork using each one of these palettes.
I'm not going to give myself a hard deadline like 100 days to do it — I have a job, a baby, a spouse, two pets, a house, and will be restarting school part-time in the Fall. But I'm going to try to do AT LEAST one piece a week. I'm also going to go in order of the book just because I know I'll have a hard time keeping track of which ones I've already done otherwise, and I know I'll also put off using the ones I don't like that much, leaving me with, like, twenty palettes I don't like at the end.
A "piece" might be anything. A piece of artwork, a piece of fanart, a poster, maybe I'll redesign a tarot card. I don't want to limit myself in that.
And one more loose limitation: A LOT of these palettes don't include black or white. I will do my absolute best to keep as strictly to the palette as possible and only if I cannot find a way to make it work will I add in black and/or white. I won't add any other colors, though.
So that's the challenge:
-At least one piece a week using the palettes in the book in order -Only adding white/black if I really can't make the palette work without it
I'll make sure to post the palette with each piece.
I also eagerly welcome constructive criticism on color use.
