Yeah, it seems that way, doesn't it? I can understand that, had there actually been a relationship established between Cole and Marie ... and something to care about, but since we never saw any of that, I don't get why people are so upset about Elsa's involvement with him. And I think it's pretty shitty that people would label her as "bad" or a "temptress" because they're both an equal part in it. Sad that people can only see the "bad" in the relationship rather than the good...

I agree, it would have been cool to see her at least another time... especially since I find it positively adorable that she's played by Aaron Staton's actual wife. But you know, Nick...then everyone would be all.... "WEHHH WHY IS THERE SO MUCH BACKSTORY IN THIS GAME I WANT MORE FIGHTING AND SHOOTOUTS FUCK CHARACTERIZATION." Gamers are never happy. And I personally think it's pretty obvious why Cole likes Elsa... because she's equally fucked up and has also been through some shit, but maybe it's just me. Do those things really have to be stated? Maybe subtlety is a lost art. Or maybe I just read too much into things. *shrug*

I think a big part of it, from what I've seen, is definitely the whole "NO YOU SHATTERED MY EXPECTATIONS OF YOU ALL OF MY HATE." And it's like... I think the whole point is that Cole isn't a perfect guy, and no one is. And yes, there was definite foreshadowing. It seems subtle because again, Cole's characterization is quite subdued... but the way he looks at Elsa and the frequent trips to The Blue Room are a clue. Even Roy calls him out on it at one point XD And yeah, Cole is... definitely not a perfect cop or even a perfect guy, hence all that backstory :/ Pretty obvious, at least to me, he was just glory-hounding and trying to live up to personal expectations and ideals that nobody could possibly uphold.

So yeah, maybe it was a cop-out. Who knows? It all could just be poor writing... and just a plot point. But that's how I see it in any case.

It's cool that you don't have a problem with it. I guess... in general people getting hung up on the affair ruffles my feathers. I didn't feel much for Cole up until that point, but I liked him more after that, because he felt like a more "real" and flawed person to me. And I guess I wonder... do people feel the same about real-life affairs? Or just in the game world? I guess I find it funny how characters are held to such high standards.
