Cold mix asphalt patching FAQ
What is cold patch asphalt?
Cold mix asphalt repair material is used for patching potholes in all weather conditions.
Cold patch asphalt, also known as cold mix asphalt, is a combination of mineral aggregate and emulsified or cutback asphalt with additives. Aggregates can be made with virgin materials or reclaimed asphalt pavement, also known as asphalt millings. The latter option is commonly used when trying to save money. Cold mixes can be made on site or at a mixing plant and then transported to the site. The flexibility to create this type of asphalt off-site is particularly useful for faraway roads.
Cold patch asphalt is a type of asphalt, just like hot mix asphalt, warm mix asphalt, mastic asphalt (sheet asphalt), and so on. Cold patch asphalt is commonly used on rural or low traffic roads. Cold mixes are commonly used for temporary patches to repair worn pavement and potholes when there is no hot mix readily available.
Cold-mix materials are durable and flexible, allowing them to self-heal even under pressure from freeze-thaw cycles, which makes cold mixes ideal for non-engineered roads. It can be used for binder, base, top courses, and leveling, as well as structural overlays.
What are the benefits of cold mix asphalt patching?
There are many benefits associated with cold mix asphalt, such as:
   Easy to maintain and recycle.
   Minimal material and transportation costs.
It can be mixed on site or off site and then transported to location.
Flexible material that is strong enough to withstand temperature fluctuations.
Cost-effective solution for repairing rural roads that are nowhere near a hot mix plant.
Eco-friendly option made from water-based materials at ambient temperatures, which reduces emissions, energy consumption and toxic fumes.
High quality cold mix asphalt repair material is featured with excellent viscosity and guaranteed permanent repairs.
What is cold mix asphalt used for?
Cold mix asphalt does a good job repairing failed patches, utility cuts and potholes. While cold mix can be used at any time of the year, it is often used during poor climate conditions such as during winter.
Graded stone can be used to create a high quality cold mix and is comparable to hot mix asphalt pavements. Asphalt emulsion mixtures are commonly used for local roads, as they make a great option when it comes to improving the strength and overall quality of thin pavement surfaces. Due to its flexibility, high void volume and ability to self-heal, cold mix asphalt is tough under pressure and resistant to cracks and surface fatigue.
Cold mix asphalt should only be applied over a base or pavement that is in pretty good condition and does not have any base or drainage defects. If there are distresses in the base or pavement, repairs must be made prior to applying the overlay for best results. We may also recommend an emulsion tack coat, especially in areas with curves or grades.
How long can cold mix asphalt last?
The life expectancy of cold mix asphalt is around one year. It is very important to use high-quality materials that are properly compacted in order to get the most out of it. Not all cold mix asphalt is made equally. Everything from the materials used, to the manufacturing process and installation alter how it holds up under pressure.
How much cold patch asphalt do I need?
How much pothole repair material will you need to do asphalt repair or patching? We have a form as following to help you determine the amount of pothole repair material you will need to ensure bond strength and ultimately maintain the integrity of the asphalt repair or concrete repair. How to apply cold patch asphalt? How to use cold patch asphalt? How to patch a driveway with cold patch asphalt?
Steps to Repairing Potholes with Cold-Patch
Step 1 – Sweep and Clean: Remove large loose rocks and other debris in the distress area.
Step 2 – Open the cold patch asphalt bag, pour and spread cold-patch material into pothole: Pour to a level approximately 1cm above surface to allow for compaction
Step 3 – Level and compact the area by using a tamper, pate compactor, board, jack hammer, or a portable road roller that provides an even, level compacted surface.
What tools do we need to apply cold asphalt?
The tools needed for cold asphalt application are simple. Cold asphalt requires a shovel, a rake, a plate compactor or portable roller. That is everything all you need to repair small to large asphalt damages.Â
What time of year can we use cold asphalt?
Cold asphalt can be used anytime when you see a damage in the driveway. It works in cold weather and even water filled potholes.
How long does it take for cold asphalt patch to harden?
Cold asphalt patch is specifically designed to remain somewhat pliable after application. This allows the product to continue to fill small voids and crevices, through continued compaction. Filling these voids prevents moisture from getting into the repaired area, and ultimately causing your patch to fail. You can drive over your patch immediately, so while it may seem like it has not set up, it is performing just as it was designed to.

How is cold mix asphalt made?
Asphalt is emulsified in water and soap before mixing it with aggregate. In emulsified state, asphalt is easy to work with because it is compact. Given enough time, the emulsion will break and the water will evaporate so that the cold mix takes on the properties of cold HMAC.
