Aquilegia has been considered for centuries a magic plant, associated with the moon and it where the symbol of Aphrodite, goddess of love and fertility… The legend says that the Aquilegia was used by witches to break or create bonds of love. Its Latin named is derived from the word for eagle (aquila), because the shape of the flower petals are said to resemble an eagle’s claw. The common name “Columbine” comes from the Latin for “dove” due to the resemblance of the inverted flower to five doves clustered together.
