They were bound to show up on her front doorstep sooner or later --- they think they don’t stand out, but they do to each other. It’s something in the way they carry themselves, she thinks. It was why she left the city for her sanctuary this far north. No electronics, barely any sort of paper trail if she can help it. She knew how to live off the grid.
Gretchen spots her almost instantly in the convenience store, when she goes to place her annual grocery order and pick up a few odds and ends. Not a woman she’s met, as far as she can remember, but there’s something familiar in her gaze that unsettles the woman. She moves through the few aisles the store has, considering her options. It could be paranoia. Hopefully it is.
