📖 The Codex Gigas (Giant Book)

📝 The Codex Gigas is the largest extant medieval illuminated manuscript in the world. It is also known as the Devil's Bible because of a very unusual full-page portrait of the devil, and the legend surrounding its creation.

The codex's bookbinding is wooden boards covered in leather, with ornate metal guards and fittings. Long: 92 cm (36 in) Wide: 50 cm (20 in) Thickness: 22 cm (8.7 in) Weigh: 74.8 kg (165 lb)

Codex Gigas is composed of 310 leaves of vellum claimed to be made from the skins of 160 donkeys, or perhaps calfskin, covering 142.6 m2 (1,535 sq ft) in total. It initially contained 320 sheets, though some of these were subsequently removed. It is unknown who removed the pages or for what purpose but it seems likely that they contained the monastic rules of the Benedictines. It is the largest known medieval manuscript. It can be moved by two people.

It was created in the early 13th century in the Benedictine monastery of Podlažice in Bohemia. It contains the complete Vulgate Bible as well as other popular works, all written in Latin.

The length, size, and detail of the codex are of such extraordinary magnitude that legend surrounds its origin, specifically the story that it was written by one scribe in one night with help from the devil himself.

According to one version of a legend that was already recorded in the Middle Ages, the scribe was a monk who broke his monastic vows and was sentenced to be walled up alive. In order to avoid this harsh penalty, he promised to create in one night a book to glorify the monastery forever, including all human knowledge. Near midnight, he became sure that he could not complete this task alone so he made a special prayer, not addressed to God but to the fallen angel Lucifer, asking him to help him finish the book in exchange for his soul. The devil completed the manuscript and the monk added the devil's picture out of gratitude for his aid.

In tests to recreate the work, it is estimated that reproducing only the calligraphy, without the illustrations or embellishments, would have taken 20 years of non-stop writing.

📝 Это пергаментный иллюминированный рукописный свод начала XIII в., созданный в бенедиктинском монастыре чешского города Подлажице (ныне квартал Подлажиц в городе Храст). Вероятно, вся работа была проделана одним человеком, на что потребовалось от 20 до 30 лет. Предположительно, манускрипт был окончен к 1230 г. Свое название "Гигантский кодекс" книга получила не из-за размеров, а из-за того, что в ней собраны все те знания, которыми обладали монахи Бенедиктинского ордена к началу XIII в.

Переплет кодекса – это деревянные доски, обтянутые кожей, с декоративной металлической защитой и фурнитурой. Формат листов – 89 см в высоту, 49 см в ширину; текст переписан в две колонки по 106 строк. Переплет – 91,5 см в длину, 50,1 см в ширину и 22 см в толщину.   Вес – 74,8 кг.

Гигантский кодекс состоит из 310 пергаментных листов, изготовленных из 160 ослиных шкур, или, возможно, из телячьей кожи, общей площадью 142,6 м2. Here is the Codex Gigas.  660 pages, hand written by one monk!  They figure it took him about 30 years to complete.  It is at the Swedish library, but no longer on public display.  However, there has been a reproduction made (!!!!) which is on display in the Czech Republic.

The book may not be quite as exciting to grimoire enthusiasts and other magicians who enjoy old manuscripts, as it contains such things as the old testament, but does get more interesting with 2 versions of the Hebrew alphabet.  The artwork is pretty unique though :D

Some books feel less like objects and more like doors someone forgot to close.

The Codex Gigas, often called the Devil’s Bible, is one of the most haunting manuscripts in medieval history—not only because of its enormous size, but because of the legend wrapped around it.

The story speaks of a condemned monk, an impossible task, a single night, and a terrible bargain made in desperation. But the deeper fear is not simply “the Devil on the page.” It is the moment when fear becomes persuasive, when shame demands escape, and when knowledge is pursued without humility.

This article reads the Codex Gigas not as a cheap horror legend, but as mysterious folklore about temptation, pressure, forbidden knowledge, and the wisdom of pausing before we trade ourselves for relief.
