With a Compostela verifying completion of their pilgrimage, peregrinos have free entry to this fascinating small museum. Included in its collection is the Codex Calixtinus, an extremely important manuscript. Its guide for pilgrims on the camino is well-known to all who make the trek and was the arguably first travel guide. The Codex is important for medieval studies in general, for the manuscript also includes some of the earliest written music in the western tradition and much else relating to the 11th and 12th centuries.
Shortly after this photo was taken in the Spring of 2011 the Codex was stolen by a cathedral worker. It was fortunately returned more-or-less unharmed after being found in the worker's garage. He was subsequently prosecuted for the theft.
