In case you missed it or chose not to participate in the national Parade of football sportsmanship and Advertising Extravaganza, here are some of the shorts that had folks in the disability and social justice communities talking.

Members of the deaf community were further incensed on the Internets when American news outlets showed only  2 seconds of the interpreter for the National Anthem while other outlets gave her equal visibility with the vocalist.

…Aaaaaand Duracell has locked down the deaf/HOH community  (that use hearing devices) for at least the next 6 months

  Coca Cola Super Bowl 2014 Commercial “America The Beautiful”

Coca – Cola offered an add suggesting that we are all Americans no matter what our ethnic background  may be, an that we can be united over our American values and sugary soda…

And finally, even if you have never thought about this issue before or feel that it is not important, we at LOU ask you to consider the following: The inherent freedom of any group in the United States is often tied to the ability of that group to define themselves and their identity, and have that definition respected and maintained by the rest of the members of the country. The decision to be African American, Latino, Hipanic, Chicano, big D Deaf, an individual with a disability or to have a cognitive disability trumps the cost, cultural attachment, ease of reference, or just plain laziness when identifying what the preferred nomenclature for any group may be. Our freedom is in the ability to define what we will be called for ourselves.
