6 College Survival Tips
1. Schedule your classes the “right” way...
If you can help it, don’t schedule back to back classes. You'll wear yourself out and miss the best time to study (i.e. right before class)
2. Setup a study schedule.
Research says for every hour you spend in class, you will need to study two hours outside of class. If possible, you should study in the same place at the same time every single day. Make sure to review your class notes and ensure that you thoroughly understand them. Prepare for each class as if there might be a pop quiz, because who knows... maybe there will be?
3. Study breaks are for winners!
Take a five or ten minute break during every hour of study. Your brain can only handle so much at once. You’re not doing yourself a favor by studying non-stop. If possible, spread out your studying into several sessions throughout the course of the day.
4. Use the library, computer labs, your professors!
You’re paying a boat load of $$$ to go to school. So if you aren’t using all the available resources, you’re not being effective. Make use of all the libraries, books, computers, labs, and even professors. Leverage all that you can and you will find it easier to succeed.
5. Find a study buddy.
Research shows that students who have study buddies usually get better grades. Now some of you might be too busy to make friends, but don’t make excuses. You can always find someone to study with and you’ll likely find that you are more eager to learn when you have a friend. Teaching your peers about class concepts can also help you learn the concept more thoroughly. Don’t let group study distract you though. Always remember to stay focused and learn as much as possible.
6. Treat your body well.
You only live once, and you only get one body. Treat your body like a temple. Don’t stuff yourself with junk food and energy drinks because you feel like you’re too busy. Take the time to take care of yourself and exercise. You’ll find that a healthier body means a healthier mind. And a healthier mind always results in better grades!
