What a fantastic morning we had last Friday, July 26th at the breathtaking Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design! From the moment we stepped onto the campus of RMCAD, we were in for a treat, diving into the theme of TRUST with the incredible Michelle Gruening—who, by the way, is also one of our fabulous CreativeMornings volunteers!

Before we got started, we had some fun goings on!

Michelle Gruening’s Trust Talk was nothing short of transformative. She took us on a captivating journey through her and her husband’s adventure, illustrating how their experience, while not necessarily life-changing, was profoundly life-affirming. Michelle's insights on trust were deeply motivating, as she shared her personal mantra that guided her through challenges and triumphs. Her empowering affirmations included: “I am strong. I am capable. I am prepared. I am relentless. I will summit.” By the end of her presentation, we felt a surge of empowerment, ready to embrace and trust the process, ourselves, and each other with renewed vigor and confidence.

Whether we're tackling a literal mountain or our own figurative challenges, we can choose to trust the process. Thank you, Michelle, for sharing your journey and inspiring us with your wisdom!

SILLA A SILLA POR UN MUNDO MEJOR

Tener o dar confianza es mucho más que un acto de fe.  Es una elección activa que, quizá, practicas a diario. 

Confianza fue el tema del mes de Julio para CreativeMornings y nadie mejor que María Angélica Sánchez para hablar sobre él, una mujer que para sacar adelante Recupera Tu Silla, su proyecto, ha tenido que confiar en sí misma, su familia, colaboradores y diferentes empresas que la han apoyado.

Cuando María Angélica y su madre llegan a la sede del Nogal de Café Azahar, el espacio anfitrión que por primera vez recibe a la comunidad creativa, la atajo en la entrada para hacerle un par de preguntas.

“¿De qué color es la confianza?” No demora ni un segundo en responder  que es multicolor. No cuenta con un ideal fijo de felicidad, pues cree que esta es momentánea, y que más bien se relaciona con la cantidad de tiempo que una persona puede estar contenta de forma sostenida.  Tal vez ella la experimenta cuando come pollo o patilla, dos de sus comidas preferidas.  “Puedo comer pollo en la presentación que venga”, dice sonriendo. No le gusta un género particular de música, sino más bien depende del momento que vive. “¿Qué canción sonaría en tu banda sonora de este momento?”. “There Will be time de Mumford & Sons”, responde, porque siente que es verdad que hay un tiempo para todo. Su lugar favorito es Italia, pues tuvo la oportunidad de vivir en Milano por 4 años. De ese país le gusta casi todo: la comida, los paisajes, el trato de la gente, el idioma, entre otras cosas. Cerca de las 8:30 a.m, María Angélica pasa al frente para dar inicio a su charla.

Nos cuenta que en el año  2015 trabajó para una empresa del sector automotriz.  Un día fue al área de recursos humanos para pedir un cambio de silla, y le dijeron que le iban a dar una de las sillas del depósito.  Cuando conoció ese lugar lo primero que pensó fue: Esto es como un cementerio de muebles.

Si algo aprendió en esa empresa fue entender la innovación como un acto de simplificación.  Comenzó a hacerse preguntas:  ¿Qué hacen con estas sillas?,  ¿Cada cuánto las botan?  ¿Qué se podría hacer diferente a lo que actualmente hace el mercado de muebles?

Una tarde cualquiera María llegó a su casa con un escritorio verde, lleno de moho, junto con una silla inservible hecha pedazos. Hacía un tiempo había llegado de Europa con el firme propósito de crear empresa para impactar de forma positiva al país. Siempre le había dicho eso a su madre: "Mamá, yo me voy a devolver para ayudar a Colombia."  

Sin saber si lo iba a lograr, ni de qué manera, hizo un trato con  el director de un hospital: Si ella le dejaba esa basura como nueva, él le iba a poner una orden de servicio para recuperar varios muebles que habían hecho parte del Seguro Social.

Su padre, al ver que su hija la abogada, con estudios de especialización y Maestría, había renunciado a una multinacional para dedicarse a arreglar sillas, pensó que  su hija se había enloquecido.  Aún así, y como hizo  Sancho con el Quijote, decidió acompañarla en su aventura. A ella en ningún momento le importó que sus compañeros de posgrado le dijeran frases como: “no pues, se inventó una tapicería play”. 

Juntos atravesaron la ciudad para encontrarse con Peluca, un tipo bajito y mechudo que ni siquiera se preocupaba en usar una careta para pintar.  Él hace parte del gremio informal de carpinteros que se encuentran  ubicados en el barrio 12 de Octubre de Bogotá. Siguiendo las indicaciones de su padre, Peluca dejó el escritorio y la silla como nuevos.

Dos días después María Angélica se volvió a reunir con el director del hospital.  Llevaba la silla y el escritorio que él le había dado, pero ahora lucían como nuevos. No había forma de que no se ganara el contrato. El gran Peluca había reutilizado todas las partes viejas y eso hacía que los muebles fueran mucho más baratos que comprarlos nuevos. Además, el hábil carpintero también aseguró que la garantía por uso sería el doble de tiempo que dan en cualquier almacén de muebles.

Ahí, en medio de la reunión, María Angélica levantó la mirada y se preguntó cuántos muebles podría  necesitar un hospital con cientos habitaciones y miles de empleados.  Esa pregunta la llevo a otra:¿Cuántos muebles botarán al día? Logró dimensionar, a grandes rasgos, la cantidad de trabajo que se le venía encima. 

 ¿Cuál fue el resultado de su locura?

El director se ahorró varios millones de pesos y desocupó una bodega para darle un mejor uso.  Por su parte, ella comenzó a apasionarse por un problema: entendió que la industria de los muebles es una de las más dañinas para el planeta. En Asia, por ejemplo, existe una fuerza laboral capaz de producir 7200 sillas por minuto. 

Tiempo después la contactó la encargada del área de sostenibilidad de una empresa. Ella estaba preocupada porque cada mes debía botar a la basura los muebles de una tienda.   Juntas encontraron una solución de economía circular: Le dieron color a las sillas e invitaron a artesanos para que las tejieran de nuevo. De esa forma el mobiliario regresó a las tiendas.

Al día de hoy, varios líderes involucrados con Recupera Tu Silla, que han tomado la decisión de recuperar sus mobiliario, le han dado vida útil a miles de muebles, los cuales representan toneladas de plástico, madera y aluminio reutilizados. 

Pero esas cifras, o de las de las utilidades que ha generado la compañía no es lo que más le gusta a  María Angélica, sino conocer noticias de personas de comunidades vulnerables que integran su equipo para aprender el oficio de recuperación de muebles.

Uno de los trabajos que más le ha gustado fue cuando recuperaron pupitres  que fueron llevados a la Guajira y el Amazonas con la ayuda de las fuerzas militares.

Fue en ese lugar, el desierto Wayuu, donde María Angélica se convenció de lo que quería hacer por el resto de su vida: trabajar por espacios dignos para los niños.  Allí, un pequeño de no más de 7 años se le acercó para regalarle un dibujo que decía: Gracias por cumplir su palabra. María Angélica le regaló una sonrisa y no dijo nada porque sabía que si hablaba se le iba a quebrar la voz.

Para cerrar su charla María Angélica nos cuenta que para construir la silla de la confianza se debe contar con 3 rasgos: autenticidad, coherencia y empatía. Si alguna de esas patas falla, la confianza se ve amenazada.

What is trust?

"Trust is the glue of life. It's the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It's the foundational principle that holds all relationships." — Stephen R. Covey

Trust is the firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. Trusting oneself involves confidence in one's own judgment, capabilities, and decision-making processes. It is the foundation of self-reliance and self-esteem. Trust in others encompasses the expectation that people will act in a reliable, honest, and supportive manner. It is a fundamental component of relationships and social cohesion.

In Jamaica, trust often revolves around community and familial bonds. The Jamaican culture emphasizes interpersonal connections, with trust being built through shared experiences and mutual respect. Due to a historical context of colonialism and social challenges, trust in institutions may be more guarded. Here in Germany, trust is often associated with efficiency, reliability, and systemic integrity. The German culture places a high value on punctuality, organization, and the rule of law, reflecting a broader trust in institutional frameworks and public systems.

Cheryl Leonhardt is a Jamaican German (Jamgerman) who thinks of herself as a continuous learner. She loves to cook, write and spend time outdoors. She worked as a secondary school teacher in Jamaica for many years and now works at the Carl-Schurz-Haus in Freiburg. She embraced blind trust when she moved to Germany in 2018 to keep her family together and has recently published a book of poetry called Visions in Verse.

So, go with your gut. Put your trust in a higher power, in our institutions, and in karma. Believe that people will do the right thing. Trust the process. And that your creativity is a well that will never run dry. 

When we trust each other, we feel safe to share ideas, give feedback, and take risks. It requires vulnerability and a willingness to be open to the possibility of disappointment or betrayal. So, trust is not purely belief or faith. It is an active choice.
