Despite how many times they fumbled with regards to what I wanted for Rossi this season, I think the writers really got it in the last few episodes.
The #1 most underappreciated character trait of Rossi’s is that he’s a former Marine. And people forget that being a former Marine can mean he has Frank Castle skills.
Stuck in a bunker? Fuck it, time to build a homemade explosive device out of scrap and murder tools and literally blow my way out of my prison while also fucking with my captor mentally and destroying his ability to use me as leverage.
Like can you even imagine any of the other characters doing so? Trying to get out? They would all do that. Messing with my captor? They would all do that. But deciding to make an IED and blow my way out of an underground shipping container? Only Rossi is just skilled enough and just crazy enough. I mean, rewatch the scene where Luke finds him. Rossi might not have had the strength to get out completely but he was, what, a foot from the surface? Man nearly rescued himself!
Go back through the main series and you’ll see it, people underestimating Rossi for a whole variety of reasons, especially age, forgetting that his greatest tool is his ability to not only absorb knowledge but apply it. He’s like season 1 Spencer mixed with season 5 Morgan. Theory and practice.
