Story:
She was the mean girl of Riverclan, the popular apprentice that had a bundle of friends, rather followers, that did everything for her because they were afraid of being excluded or becoming the target of her bullying.
The adults didn’t put much effort into stopping her. They had better things to do than worry about what some silly young apprentices were doing, which luckily for Cloverpaw meant she could get away with saying a lot of, rather mean things.
Oddly enough, her sharp attitude is what made Otterpaw fall for her. Cloverpaw knew this and used it to make him do what she wanted: hunt prey for her (to eat or to pretend she caught it), give her the best moss, do all the chores.
As warriors, they became mates. Otterfreckle was happy. Cloverfox was getting bored. But she didn’t want to lose such a valuable servant.
She wanted something real. She found it in Scorchheart, the Thunderclan warrior that she met at the border while their two Clans were in a moment of peace.
The two visited often, and Cloverfox found that she didn’t want to make Scorchheart do anything. Simply being with him made her feel full.
But one night they were spotted, by none other than Otterfreckle. Cloverfox panicked. What would happen to her now? What would happen to Scorchheart?
Otterfreckle confronted her later on in the forest, going on about her betrayal to him and the Clan, how it was his duty to inform them even if he didn’t want to. Cloverfox tried to persuade him, as she always could, saying how she loved him. But Otterfreckle had just seen the proof to prove otherwise, and he wouldn’t fall for it again.
When he turned around to continue back to camp, Cloverfox jumped. She bit a chunk out of the back of his neck, and when he continued to struggle, ripped his throat as well.
Digging took a painfully long time. Cloverfox was so used to getting others to do things for her, but she didn’t want to risk getting help. Eventually she was sure the hole was big enough, and buried Otterfreckle there.
The moons following were tough without Otterfreckle to do everything Cloverfox didn’t want to. But her secret was safe, and she was free to keep meeting with Scorchheart.
That is, until one meeting when Scorchheart decided to break up with her, spewing garbage about how they could never be together and yadaydayda.
She saw them at a gathering, Scorchheart and his Clanmate Bouncestep--the stupid she-dung with the stupid name--sitting incredibly close, nuzzling like they were more than Clanmates. Like they were mates! Maybe for a long time too, maybe during the time he was mates with Cloverfox.
It took a while to find an opportunity. She found it during another gathering, when finally Scorchheart was absent. Cloverfox spoke to Bouncestep, mocking concern for her mate. Bouncestep, of course, was wary but curious, and willing to follow Cloverfox away from the crowd and into the clusters of ferns.
Cloverfox tore out her throat before she could make a sound, burying her, which was easier since it had rained the previous day.
Scorchheart was so sad. Cloverfox tried to suggest that Bouncestep had run away, but he wouldn’t believe it. Cloverfox was close to just giving up, but then she realized that she was carrying Scorchheart’s kits.
Immediately, she told him the good news, how they could be parents together. But shaking his head sadly, he refused, and told her that she would have to raise them alone.
Cloverfox shouted at him, too furious to censor herself, screaming how she had killed Otterfreckle to keep their secret, killed Bouncestep so that they could be together.
Scorchheart was enraged beyond words. He raised claws, then lowered them. As much as he hated it, he still cared for Cloverfox on some levels. Even if he didn’t, she was carrying kits. His kits. Stars, what did he get himself into?
He was still angry, still wrapping his head around all that she told him, when he felt something sharp press on his jugular and warmth spread throughout his body.
Alone in the nursery, Cloverfox allowed herself to cry. Then she burrowed in frustration, because her anger at others prevented her from realizing her mistake, and how horribly she messed up.
When her mind was weak, she would ask if they really deserved what they got? What she did? When it was stronger, she was able to ignore them, able to pay attention to the present and forget what was already done.
She loved her kits just as much as any mother. Four kits, three sons and one beautiful daughter. She raised them to be nice, to be good. Funnily enough, two of them became best friends with the kit of one of Cloverfox’s most common targets when she was an apprentice. They were only a moon or two younger.
Moons passed, and Cloverfox moved on. Her moments of regret became less common, but still overpowering when they did occur. Her kits became amazing warriors, Flashspot, Prickleroot, Whitetail, and Reedpool.
The peace between Riverclan and Thunderclan fell, to no one’s surprise. Cloverfox took part in battle with her son, Flashspot. She noticed a warrior gain the upper hand on him, and charged in to help. Right as the warrior was raising what looked to be a killer blow, Cloverfox came between her and her son. Her throat was slashed.
Cloverfox tried not to focus on how much that Thunderclan warrior looked like Scorchheart, and instead on Flashspot pressing against her.
She wasn’t surprised when she found herself in the Dark Forest. And, at this point, she didn’t really care.
Additional Information:
--The warrior that killed her was Bouncestep’s and Scorchheart’s daughter, who was a kit when her mother died. Cloverfox didn’t really know who she was outside of being a Thunderclan warrior, and vice versa.
--I like to imagine that the queen mentioned at the end to be one of Cloverfox’s main targets was Blackdawn’s mother. They likely made up when they were both queens together.
