This was the first Bert Jansch track I heard when I followed him out of Pentangle to see what else he was about. I still marvel at this performance. For guitar, and for his vocals. Entrancing.

News on the radio, happy birthday
Happy birthday, happy birthday
one of those songs I just can’t ever ever skip. many of those, but this one is unforgettable to me. viscerally heavy, idk if anyone else feels what I mean - I always say it reminds of the flip side of the same coin to that “The Boys Are Back In Town” song by Thin Lizzy. Like, this overwhelming feeling of relief — something or someone you missed so terribly is finally finally finally back, and now what’s going on?
one side of that coin is clearly outward elation and excitable readiness for action once again. the other side feels more of an introspective expression of relief; inverse to shouting-out and celebrating; a desperate thanks, Jacki might not know exactly how that absence felt for this guy who I think loves her. To me it sounds like crumpling your face in their jacket, smelling them again and crying “oh god, thank god, thank god”. So I like this song very much.
