“I won’t fail you this time... I promise.”
The words not intended for Kafei’s ears slipped out quietly as Link sat by themselves in the back of the Curiosity Shop. Link was mostly talking to themselves, as they often did when they had time to rest. Even with Tatl around, she had her own motives, and Link’s concerns about their own mental health were met with either silence or insensitivity from her. Link certainly didn’t mind the company, but they couldn’t really find anyone in Termina who understood them.
They held the ocarina gently in their hands, a reminder of Zelda, the only friend Link had left at home. She was the only one who understood, who believed them when Link had told her how much they’d been through, that they’d been a child trapped in an adult’s body. Now that Link had returned, they didn’t know what to call themselves anymore, other than simply... lost, and no less of a stranger in their own skin.
There was only a brief moment before footsteps sounded around the corner. All Link could do was pretend that everything was okay, though after a while the facade started to show its cracks, with Link’s doubts and inner turmoil slowly revealing itself. Was there a point in hiding any longer?
