i find it interesting how lucien seems to view clemence in some respect as belonging to him; someone he can tell what to do and where to go. lik during the fight, when he finds clemence on deck with jerome he drags her away from jerome and then takes her to their room.
especially its notable that he tells jerome to let her go rather than telling clemence to come with him, its removing her autonomy(? i think thats the word) by presuming that her being there is by jerome's desires and not hers, like she can't or wouldnt want to be here on her own so she must be being influenced. and i think that can be traced back to lucien’s ultimate desire to live an easy, upper-class life, and his marriage to clemence symbolizes that to him, SHE symbolizes that to him. She’s not quite a person to him, she’s a symbol of the life he wants to live but won’t let himself believe he deserves. But he won’t let himself let go either, so clemence needs to be kept in her place, which is upper-class fine society, first class cabins, dining rooms at teatime. She can’t BE in the middle of a fight with chaos and noise and violence, because that would ruin his idea of the Perfect Life that would be waiting for him if he could deserve it. anyway im tired im goign to sleep now srry for the bad screenshot
