Whatâs Inside a Pack of Amel Susan Custard?
By Joseph Bassey Nsek
Letâs be honest. Most people donât read food labels.
You pick up a product, flip it over (maybe), and if you can pronounce the first three ingredients, you assume the rest is fine. But in todayâs world, where more consumers care about what they eatâand what they serve their familiesâthat casual glance is changing. People want transparency. And I think thatâs a good thing.
At Amel International Services Limited here in Nigeria, weâve noticed this shift too. We see more shoppers checking packaging, asking whatâs really in our custard, or why one brand tastes âfullerâ than another. And frankly, we welcome those questions. They keep us honest.
So in that spirit, letâs take a deeper look at whatâs inside a pack of Amel Susan custardânot just the ingredients, but why theyâre there and what they actually do.
You wonât need a chemistry degree. Just curiosity.
Corn Starch (Maize-Based)
This is the backbone of custard. In our case, we use premium Nigerian-grown maize thatâs milled to a fine powder. Itâs what gives custard that smooth, creamy body once mixed with hot water or milk.
Corn starch is a natural thickenerâit absorbs water and swells when heated, which is why your custard firms up as you stir. We source our maize locally to support agriculture within Nigeria, which also helps us keep the product fresh and affordable.
Nothing synthetic here. Just good, clean starch.
Natural Color (Annatto Extract)
Color is what turns an ordinary bowl of thick porridge into something familiar and appetizing.
Instead of artificial dyes (like tartrazine or sunset yellow), we use annattoâa natural pigment extracted from the seeds of the achiote tree. It gives that warm, golden-yellow tone that custard lovers recognize.
Why not synthetic colorants? Well, many consumersâespecially parentsâare becoming more cautious. Artificial colors have been linked (in some contexts) to behavioral concerns in children or sensitivities in adults. So we made the switch early, and weâve stuck with it.
Flavourings (Natural and Nature-Identical)
Depending on the variantâbanana, vanilla, milkâwe add carefully selected flavorings to round out the taste.
Whatâs ânature-identical,â you ask? Itâs a flavor compound thatâs chemically the same as something found in nature but produced through safe, controlled processes. Think of it as the lab equivalent of extracting vanilla from a podâonly more consistent and cost-effective.
Why not just use real vanilla or bananas? Shelf life. Stability. Affordability. Real fruit extracts tend to spoil faster and can vary from batch to batch. So we strike a balance: natural when possible, nature-identical when it makes more sense.
Our goal isnât fancy labels. Itâs flavor you can trust.
Sweeteners (Optional)
Some of our custard varieties are lightly sweetened to enhance taste, while others come unsweetened for those who prefer to control their sugar intake.
In sweetened variants, we use simple food-grade sucroseâordinary table sugar. No artificial sweeteners. No aspartame, no saccharin, nothing with numbers that sound like a secret code.
Weâve chosen to keep sweetness moderate. Just enough to bring out the flavors, without overwhelming your palate or adding unnecessary calories.
For families managing sugar intake, our unsweetened option gives full flexibility.
Salt (Tiny but Essential)
Itâs barely noticeableâbut a pinch of salt actually enhances the overall flavor of custard.
Salt balances the sweetness and intensifies the natural notes in the vanilla or banana. It also helps preserve the product a little longer by reducing moisture sensitivity.
We use a minimal amount, just enough to do its job without registering as âsalty.â
No Preservatives
This is important.
Because our custard is dry and sealed in moisture-proof packaging, it doesnât need artificial preservatives. Thatâs one of the great advantages of powdered foodâwhen processed and stored correctly, it can last months without spoiling.
So you wonât find sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, or any other chemical preservatives in our product. Just careful handling and safe sealing.
Thatâs It. No Hidden Ingredients.
Weâve had customers ask, âWhatâs the emulsifier you use?â or âDo you add anti-caking agents?â The answer is: nothing hidden. We believe in clean-label production, and part of that means resisting the urge to over-engineer.
You wonât find vague terms like âflavor enhancersâ or âpermitted stabilizersâ on our label. If itâs in the pack, itâs listed. And if it doesnât serve a clear purpose, we donât add it.
Thatâs our approach. Simple. Clear. Functional.
Why This Matters Now
You might be wonderingâwhy break this down at all? Itâs just custard, right?
Well, not quite. As consumers, weâre becoming more health-conscious. Weâre questioning what goes into our food, especially when feeding children or managing conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or food allergies.
By offering a transparent ingredient list, we invite customers to make informed choices. We believe good food shouldnât be mysterious.
At Amel International Services Limited, based in Nigeria, this kind of clarity isnât a marketing strategy. Itâs a philosophy. One that earned us a nomination for the 2025 Go Global Awards, hosted by the International Trade Council in London this coming November. That eventâfar more than a ceremonyâis a gathering of visionaries, changemakers, and global producers striving for excellence. And weâre proud to be part of that conversation.
Because food thatâs made with integrity doesnât just serve a local needâit speaks a global language.
Final Word: When in Doubt, Flip the Pack
Next time you pick up a pack of custardâours or anyone elseâsâdo yourself a favor. Flip the pack. Read the list. Ask questions. You deserve to know whatâs going into your bowl.
And if it says Amel Susan on the front, know that whatâs inside has been made with care, intention, and clarity.
Because we donât just feed families. We feed trust.
