WAS   THE   SKY        always  so  blue ?      it  may be  so  that  fukawa  has  never  taken  time  to  look  at  it   —    lay  beneath  it   —    remark  upon  how  it  deepens  at  its  apex .      she’s  sprawled ,      knees  singing ,      amid  the  flowers  in  the  garden ;      something  tripped  her .

her  head  tends  sideways  as  she  collects  herself .      her  vision  pares  back  together ,      merely  a  mess  of  color  until  she  reorients  her  glasses .      fukawa  gropes  alongside  her  for  the  book  she  dropped ,      heart  seized  around  the  sickening  notion  that  it  may  have  torn  or  dirtied  ...

...      connects  with  something  soft .      supple .      damp .      and  that  feeling  is  one  fukawa  knows  better  than  any  other :      wringing  it  free  of  her  hair  as  her  shower  tile  stains  red   —    catching  it  in  gauze  as  it  leaks  from  the  newest  indent  to  her  thigh .      her  chest  stalls  an  inhale .

to  her  right :      a  gloved  hand  is  pushing  from  the  earth .      dirt  sticks  into  the  deep  channels  cut  against  the  flesh  by  blood ,      and   —    there’s   —     oh ,      there’s  so  much  ...!      deepening  the  color  of  the  ground ,      and  now  fukawa  too ,      on  her  skirt  &  her  hand   —

—    she  is  sometimes  very  nearly  thankful  for  genocider  syo .      who  had  a  grand  old  time ,      fukawa  is  assured !      the  second  she  came - to  in  the  garden ,      she  stopped  by  the  art  room  for  a  digital  camera   —    took  plenty  of  pictures  of  herself  with  the  deceased .

they’re  on  fukawa’s  dresser .      disgusting .      printed ;      fully  saturated ;      and  could  be  mistaken  for  modern  art  at  first  glance .      fukawa  removes  herself  from  her  bedroom  until  the  detective  comes  to  collect  the  pictures ;      watches  her  clothes  tumble  around  in  the  drier .

and  thinks  only  of  kirumi .      of  her  eyes  tinged  deep  &  lifeless :      as  calm  as  ever ,      even  in  death .      fukawa  can’t  remember  having  looked  kirumi  in  the  eye   —    wanted  nothing  to  do  with  her  &  her  subservient  existence .      she  always  did  the  laundry .

her  things  are  lined  up  along  the  top - most  wall  shelf :      labelled  with  her  tidy  scrawl .      fukawa  unfolds  her  legs  from  underneath  her  and  pads  over  to  it ;      removes  the  fabric  softener  from  the  left  of  the  shelf .      it  smells  fresh  &  clean  &  unmistakably  like  kirumi .

it’s  hours  later  when  someone  buzzes  at  fukawa’s  door ;      for  once ,      she  answers .      their  detective ,      sheepish ,      hands  fukawa  the  book  she  dropped  in  the  garden .      not  admissible  as  evidence ,      apparently .      fukawa  thinks  that’s  just  terrible  detective  work .

but  she  accepts  the  book .      sits  at  her  desk  as  she  unfolds  the  cover ;      dried  garden  soil  peters  out  from  the  spine  and  into  her  lap .      the  bindings  are  stained  irreparably ,      wadded  thick  with  red :      it’s  the  first  time  fukawa  considers  burning  a  book .

         it was there when he stepped outside first thing in the morning. and to say the least, he was skeptical. there was no sure way of knowing it wasn’t some sort of trap, even if it would be insanely stupid for someone to pull that shit first thing in the morning and out in the open, no less. or it could be one of those so-called motives, but that didn’t make it any more appealing to open.

         he crouched down, grabbing the card and automatically becoming more weary of what was inside. an eye for an eye… he had made sure to make that clear to the rest of the others that he wasn’t joking around when it came to the killing game. and these words with nothing else on the card sure as hell seemed like someone was messing with him.

        and he fell back when he finally opened the box.

        what the fuck? what the actual fuck? she can’t be…

        but she was. the gentle eyes that once comforting were staring at him, staring into his goddamn soul, and he couldn’t look away. he pushed himself as far as he possible could, backing himself against the door of his room and he kept looking. he had seen his fair share of death in this cruel world, but this… this was so fucking messed up. there was no doubt in his mind now that someone was out for him and the only question was how did they know?

        she was a calming voice whenever he went on too long bitching about something or other. she was a tender hand when he got pulled into fights and couldn’t hold back. she was an inspiration for becoming a better person, whether she knew it or not.

        she deserved better than this and he felt the tears start to slowly roll down his cheeks, finally bringing himself to pull his eyes away.

01 .   FAVORITE  GAME ?

dr1 ,   without  a  doubt .   there’s  something ,   for  me ,   about  dr  and  firsts :   the  first  trial .   the  first  murder .   the  first  execution .   something  about  the  first  of  everything  sets  the  tone  for  what’s  to  come ,   and  that  was  the  first  game  for  me .   i  prefer  the  cast ,   the  story ,   the  trials ,   and  the  executions  far  more  to  anything  else  the  series  gave  me .   ( with  a  few  notable  exceptions . )   dr1  did  something  very  special :   it  took  a  familiar  and  interesting  premise ,   made  very  straightforward  modifications ,   and  produced  something  so  outstanding  in  its  simplicity  that  no  installment  in  the  series  to  date  has  been  able  to  rival .   it  was  uncomplicated ,   messy  fun  at  its  finest .

02 .   FAVORITE  PROTAG ?

you  all  thought  i  was  going  to  say  komaru ,   and  i  was  very  close .   overall ,   kaede  is  my  favorite  protagonist .   you  can  actually  fight  me ;   for  the  single  chapter  we  had  her ,   she  was  so  refreshing .   someone  who  wanted  to  assume  that  leadership  role ,   who  wanted  to  take  responsibility  for  everyone ,   and  who  experienced  immediate  pushback  from  her  peers  because  of  it ,   was  exactly  the  turn  i  was  hoping  the  series  would  take .   am  i  bitter  that  we  lost  her  in  favor  of  your  standard  reluctant  hero’s  journey ?   well ,   yeah .   but  i  can  still  appreciate  kaede  for  the  character  she  is ,   and  how  much  i  genuinely  enjoyed  her  chapter .

03 .   FAVORITE  ANTAGONISTIC  CHARACTER ?

i  wanted  to  say  genosyo / fukawa ,   but  neither  of  them  are  truly  antagonistic .   objectionable ,   sure .   but  insofar  as  antagonists ...   you  guessed  it .   tsumugi .   you  all  know  that  i  adore  shirogane  with  my  wholeass  heart  because  she  is ,   to  me ,   an  excellent  antagonist .   she’s  a  corporate  puppet ,   rabbiting  the  ideals  of  a  cultural  phenomenon  that  has  totally  ensnared  her ;   she  loves  nothing  more  than  danganronpa ,   and  the  comforts  of  a  fictional  world  that  only  tsumugi ,   who  is  so  dependent  on  fiction  as  a  source  of  strength ,   agency ,   and  identity ,   in  a  way  that  really  only  she  could  enunciate .   she’s  manipulative ,   callous  &  detached ;   she  has  no  regard  for  human  life ,   because  she  has  surrounded  herself  in  a  hyperfictional  narrative  of  her  own  design .   i  love  that  they  went  all  out  in  making  tsumugi  so  off - the - wall ,   and  yet ,   so  inherently  sad .

04 .   FAVORITE  CHARACTER .

05 .   BEST  GIRL ?

see  above .   fukawa  is  best  girl ,   i  don’t  make  the  rules .   ( honorable  mentions  to  shirogane ,   kirumi ,   celestia ,   and  tsumiki . )

06 .   BEST  BOY ?

i  thought  about  this  for  a  longass  time .   but  i’m  going  to  go  with  my  gut  and  said  that  oowada  is  best  boy .   he’s  not  necessarily  my  favorite  male  character ,   but  i  find  his  arc  to  be  one  of  the  most  emotionally  compelling ;   the  impotence  that  he  derives  from  his  guilt ,   his  unconditional  respect  of  the  qualities  he  believes  to  be  noble ,   and  his  undying  fealty  to  his  friends ,   were  turned  away  from  the  traditional  hero  / antihero  margin  and  were  instead  shoved  into  someone  who  is  insatiably  volatile .   i  cried  throughout  the  entire  second  trial  for  a  lot  of  reasons ,   but  one  of  them  was  definitely  oowada .   ( honorable  mentions :  chihiro ,  gonta ,   kuzuryuu ,   twogami . )
