A pendant necklace can be worn alone or layered with other necklaces. You can make your own pendant using materials such as oven-bake clay and basic molding techniques. The custom-made pendant can be used in a simple necklace.
Things You’ll Need
Metal cookie sheet
Parchment paper
Wooden rolling pin
Pencil
Oven-bake polymer clay (3-5 colors, 1/2 inch wide balls)
Craft knife
Toothpick
Chain
Jewelry pliers
10-12mm jump rings (2)
Refrigerator
Oven
Step 1
Flatten each ball of clay into an oval using the wooden rolling pin. Each oval should be as thick as a quarter.
Step 2
Using the craft knife, cut across each oval.
Step 3
Stack the half oval shapes on top of each other, making sure the straight edges meet. The order of colors is entirely up to you.
Step 4
Flatten the stack of clay pieces with the wooden rolling pin. Apply pressure until the overall thickness is half of the original thickness.
Place the clay in the fridge for 5 minutes.
Step 5
Using the pencil, draw a rectangle or square in the center of the stacked clay.
Step 6
Using the craft knife, cut out the shape.
Step 7
Cut lengthwise down the middle of the clay shape.
Step 8
Position each piece sideways, exposing the stacked layers.
Step 9
Push the two pieces together, applying pressure with your fingers.
Step 10
Using the wooden rolling pin, flatten the clay. Continue flattening until the thickness is 1/4 of the original thickness.
Step 11
Slice the clay into your desired shape. This design features two joined diamond shapes for a Southwestern, earthy vibe.
Step 12
Using the toothpick, pierce a hole at the top of the clay piece.
Bake the clay in the oven for 15-20 minutes or according to the package’s directions.
Step 13
Using the jewelry pliers, open a jump ring.
Step 14
Add the jump ring to the pendant. Close the jump ring with the jewelry pliers.
Step 15
Using the cutting portion of the jewelry pliers, cut a long strand of chain. The length depends on the desired length of the finished necklace. This design measured 26 inches long.
Step 16
Add the pendant to the chain.
Step 17
Finish the necklace by connecting the ends of the chain with the second jump ring.
