Prompt: Kohaku being happy and having a good day, using them /their pronouns. *I had to use "it" in a few places.
A Wish for a Christmas Special
If asked, one would not be very likely to agree that a cold, winter day had a great deal in common with a cool, summer night. But, if one asked Kohaku on this particular day, they would politely disagree on the matter. Though cold, with the previous night bringing a soft blanket of snow, it was similar to the night when they had first met. At least in terms on how it felt to Kohaku, how happy Kohaku had felt after being saved by Shuichiro those many months ago. Despite quivering in the cold, holding their hands up their mouth to breathe some heat onto them, Kohaku had set out of the house to complete a mission.
You see a few weeks ago, Shuichiro had finally brought a television set for his house after much persuasion from his new houseguests, well, just one in particular.
~Flashback
"I can’t believe I suckered that Shuichiro to get me a TV.” Koryu said happily while flipping through the numerous channels on the TV, without really bothering to look for something to watch.
"He didn’t buy the TV just for you, he brought for everyone!” cried Kohaku who happened to be sitting next to Koryu.
"Nah, you just wish he did.” Argued back Koryu, trying its best to wind up Kohaku, “He only brought because of –“But before Koryu could finish his sentence.
"Because you couldn’t stop whining.” Interrupted Kokuyo, as though out of thin air. And just as quickly as Kokuyo had interrupted, the remote went missing from Koryu’s hand in Kokuyo’s.
"HEY!!!” Koryu’s attention was now off Kohaku’s, instead it was now on Kokuyo’s. “I was here first!”
"You were,” Kokuyo nodded in agreement, “But you weren’t watching anything.” Stated Kokuyo, after finally settling on a channel that did not seem so boring.
"I was looking for something to watch!” Koryu yelled defensively.
"Don’t you dare lie, Koryu! We all knew you were just hogging it!” Kohaku interjected, gaining Koryu’s attention back.
"What are you accusing me of, you little --!,"Koryu was cut off by another the other Angel of the household.
"Now, now, you two. Why don’t we all sit down and enjoy the Christmas special that’s on.” Hisui said with a smile towards the two, quickly earning a glare from Koryu and a smile from Kohaku.
"Fine.” “Okay!” they both said at the same time.
~A few Christmas specials later
"Hisui . . ;”
"Yes, Kohaku?” Hisui replied from the kitchen, making a pot of tea.
"You know those specials that we were watching earlier?” Kohaku asked hesitantly while pushing its index fingers together, much like a small child wanting to ask a favor from their parent."
"What’s the matter?”
"Um … You see …” Kohaku began twiddling its fingers now, “I was hoping, with Christmas coming up … Maybe, we can all do something together!”
"I don’t see any problem with that,” Hisui agreed with a smile, earning a sigh of relief from Kohaku.
"And … Um … . “ Kohaku began again, but this time turning a slight shade of red.
"Let me guess, you want to keep this a surprise from Shuichiro?” Hisui suggested.
Kohaku simply nodded. “Okay, shall we get planning then?”
~Present Time
And that is why Kohaku was outside, despite the lack of sunshine. ‘Okay, Kohaku, time to get everything we need.’ Kohaku encourage itself, as Kohaku began mentally bracing itself for the fourth time since leaving the house a few minutes earlier.
"Meow~”
"Oh, Sango!” smiled Kohaku seeing Sango in its usual spot by the shop where Shuichiro gets his cigarettes. “How are you today?” asked Kohaku, while petting Sango under its chin just where the cat, well at least Sango, liked it.
After a few moments of playing with Sango, who was awfully more playful than usual, Kohaku noticed that the shop was not open. “Hmm, did the old lady take the day off today?” Kohaku asked a loud, earning another meow from Sango.
"Well, I have to be off so I can get the supplies for the party. Bye Sango~” sang Kohaku, waving goodbye to the cat.
As the day continued, Kohaku began to feel as though something was wrong. “I know that it’s cold today, but why haven’t I seen anyone?” Kohaku asked a loud. And, another thing that Kohaku thought that was strange, none of the shops that Kohaku had tried have been opened.
"Oh,” after trying what felt like the hundredth shop today, something clicked in Kohaku’s head. “Maybe all the shops are closed today because it’s Christmas?”
After a few moments of sinking in that information, Kohaku’s eyes began to water as it realized its mistake. “Koryu was right, I am an airhead!” Just as when the first tear left Kohaku’s eyes, it began to snow.
It was not a harsh blizzard of snow that began to fall, luckily for Kohaku, but flurries. Though, still snowing, it did not make much of a difference in temperature.
Looking up at the sky, Kohaku began to ponder its next move. “Maybe, I should just go home and help Hisui …” While the thought depressed Kohaku, not much could be done over the matter. “I just really wanted to make everything festive for Shuichiro …” With another teardrop, Kohaku quickly wiped its eyes with its loose sleeve and set off, back in the direction of the house.
"Oh … What am I going to Hisui? Or, everyone else?” With every step, Kohaku began to worry even more over the lack of decorations in their hands.
Absentmindedly, Kohaku had long stopped in its tracks with bringing its right hand covering its mouth. Kohaku’s mind was going all over the place with trying to think of ideas that could fix the mess Kohaku was in.
As time passed, Kohaku was no closer in coming up with an idea, then it was when Kohaku began walking back home. “Oh, I give up … I’m sorry Shuichiro.” Mumbled Kohaku, with tears once again forming.
"Give up on what?” asked a voice from behind Kohaku, surprising God’s favorite Angel causing Kohaku to jump into the sky.
After calming its heart, Kohaku looked to see who had scared them moments before, only to find that Shuichiro was the one that had scared it. Of course, being the sweetheart that they were, Kohaku’s mood immediately brighten from seeing Shuichiro.
"Shuichiro!” Kohaku exclaimed, putting both its feet back on the ground, giving a tackle hug to Shuichiro. “I thought you were going to work late today!”
"I got off a few hours early, it’s almost six.” Shuichiro stated after taking a quick glance at his watch from above Kohaku’s head.
"Wait a minute! It can’t be that late!” And just like that, Kohaku’s began to worry once more, as Kohaku had lost track of time to get the party ready for Shuichiro. Shuichiro simply held out his watch so Kohaku could check the time for itself. “Aww, you are right.”
After a few moments of Kohaku mumbling to itself, Shuichiro began guiding Kohaku back home, out of the cold. “Kohaku, what is the matter?” From the few mumbles that Shuichiro had overheard, he knew the sooner that Kohaku spilled, the sooner Kohaku would be happy again.
Though, as luck would have it, or Kohaku’s stubbornness, Kohaku did not tell Shuichiro what was troubling it.
The walk back home was quiet, except for Kohaku mumbling to itself. While Shuichiro wanted to try to rid of Kohaku’s worries, he felt that he, for a lack of a better word, being anti-social probably would not be able to fix the entire problem alone.
No more than twenty minutes had gone by when they had both finally reached the house.
"Welcome home, you two,” called out Hisui from the living room when Hisui had noticed both Shuichiro and Kohaku had returned home.
<
p>“We’re home.” Kohaku had replied back without its usual tone of happiness.
Since knowing Kohaku for quite some time, Hisui immediately picked up something was wrong and just when Hisui was going to ask, Hisui had noticed the lack of Christmas decorations in Kohaku’s hands.
"Lady Hisui!Kohaku cried out, running from the home’s entrance into Hisui’s arms, immediately shrinking to its night form. “All the shops were closed so I couldn’t buy any Christmas decorations so I screwed up Christmas for everyone.” Kohaku spoke quite fast during its explanation, but everyone had heard in between the sobs coming out of Kohaku.
"It’s fine little one, we can make do with Christmas dinner.” Hisui said, while patting Kohaku’s head trying to calm down the little Angel, “You can help set up and clean too.” Suggested Hisui, knowing full well that Kohaku would want to help out with something.
Watching from the entrance way, Shuichiro had heard the conversation between Hisui and Kohaku, and once understanding the problem he had set out to look for something.
Once Shuichiro had returned back to the living, Kohaku was still being calmed down by Hisui and Kokuyo was sitting at the table, strangely or not was occupied reading a book, had given Shuichiro a look when he noticed the box that he was carrying. Deciding to sit next to Kokuyo, Shuichiro sat down and started taking out the contents from the box and setting them on the table.
Colorful pieces of construction paper, glue, glitter, scissors, tape, and other supplies needed for arts and crafts had found places on the table between everyone in the room. “Oh, what’s this Shuichiro?” asked Hisui with smile when it had noticed what Shuichiro was trying to do and decided to help by bringing Kohaku’s attention.
Kohaku had been facing down on Hisui’s chest, so when Hisui had asked something, Kohaku decided to see what Hisui was talking about. To much of their surprise, Kohaku saw the table covered in art supplies and Shuichiro cutting something out.
"What are you doing Shuichiro?” asked Kohaku, with wide eyes as Kohaku could not figure out what Shuichiro was doing but was fascinated by it.
"A snowflake."
Kohaku blinked, the thing that was in Shuichiro's hand looked nothing like a snowflake. It was a square with a few cuts made into it. "But it doesn't look like one."
No reply came from Shuichiro, he kept on making cuts here and there. Still Kohaku kept watching, waiting to see if Shuichiro could make a snowflake. After a few more cuts, Shuichiro put down the scissors and began opening the square. As the square began to open up, Kohaku's eyes began to widen once again and as soon as there was snowflake in Shuichiro's hand, Kohaku let out a cute laugh and floated up next to Shuichiro.
"Oh, it's so pretty, Shuichiro." Kohaku exclaimed and then a thought came into Kohaku's mind. "Maybe if we make enough of these, then we can decorate the house with snowflakes!"
Shuichiro nodded in agreement, while handing Kohaku a piece of paper and a pair of small scissors. "Before cutting the paper, you want to fold it into a square and afterwards cut triangles of different shapes into it." Shuichiro explained.
"Does it matter how many times I fold it?" Asked Kohaku with a slight look of confusion on its face. Shuichiro shook his head, "Oh yay!!!" Exclaimed Kohaku once again, starting to fold his paper.
After finishing its first snowflake, Kohaku had another idea. "Hisui, Kokuyo, do you two want to make decorations with us?"
At some point since the snowflake-making business, Kokuyo had returned to its book so Kokuyo had not heard Kohaku's question, but Hisui had heard. "We'd love to!" Answered Hisui, all the while closing Kokuyo's book making Kokuyo lose his spot.
That is how the Shuichiro household spent the night; making snowflakes, ornaments, stockings for everyone even for Koryu, poinsettias, and just about everything one can do with construction paper.
Hours passed, the house grew more festive with every new piece of decoration and soon, little Kohaku was fast asleep holding onto the first snowflake that Shuichiro had made with a huge grin on their face. Tucking Kohaku into the make-shift bed from a laundry basket, making sure to put extra blankets on top of Kohaku as he could already feel the frost from outside getting into the house.
Turning to leave to his own room, the bottom of Shuichiro's shift was pulled by a small hand. "Shuichiro . . ." Kohaku called out sleepily.
"Yeah." Said Shuichiro, bending down to his knees so he could be nearer to Kohaku.
"Lend me your ear." Strange as it was, a command of sorts coming from Kohaku, Shuichiro did as he was told. With his right ear close to Kohaku, Kohaku had sat up almost as if Kohaku was going to tell Shuichiro a secret. Though not a secret, to Shuichiro's surprise, Kohaku had instead kissed Shuichiro on the check, making Kohaku to a bright shade of red in the process. "That was a thank you for today ... And for everything else!" Kohaku shouted before covering their head with blankets.
The entire from the kiss to Kohaku hiding had barely processed in his head, before turning a slight shade of red himself. "Kohaku . . . " Shuichiro began, before stopping himself from saying good night. ". . . I love you."
No reply came from the bundle with the little Angel; taking that as his cue to leave, Shuichiro got up from his kneeling position to head back to the door.
Just as when he was going to shut the door behind him, there was a soft voice calling out from the basket, "I love you, too."
With a smile, Shuichiro closed the door behind him. When the door had closed, Kohaku came up from underneath the blankets, "This was the best day ever!" Smiled Kohaku to them self, then proceeding to go back to bed with a huge smile on their face and that is how Kohaku had woke up the next day.
Again, sorry that this was late! I hope you enjoyed it, this is the first time that I have written anything with these characters so it was hard to get into character.
