Throwback to just a couple of weeks ago watching a beautiful sunset from my oceanview room in the Galapagos. These days, with each Daily podcast episode I listen to, it feels like I had the last ticket to Disneyworld before the park burned to the ground. Here’s to better days and beautiful sunsets on the open air beach which we know are going to come. #galapagos #ecuador #classicjourneys #travelwithfathom (at Islas Galapagos) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-NZN8WHG1f/?igshid=1n9l4xrrpa2vr
Something amazing happened in the world just a couple of weeks ago (before the C-word took over our lives). We rescued sea turtles from a commercial fishing net in the Galapagos Islands! We were sailing back after an awesome snorkeling session with sea lions, penguins and turtles, when our @classicjourneys guide, Eric, noticed a green net on the surface of the ocean. He immediately asked us to clear the deck. Pedro, the captain, ran over carrying a large kitchen knife. The situation quickly became clear: Some sea turtles had gotten caught in a fishing net. They made the decision to pull the animals onto the boat (rather than struggle to release them underwater) and together, they went to work. They made a small incision in one sea turtle's skin, and after some struggling, pulled out a fishing hook. Before releasing the gentle creature back into the ocean, Eric gave her a big wet kiss. Splash! They performed the same mini surgery on the next sea turtle caught in the net. Kiss! Splash! Freedom! Commercial boats are not supposed to fish within 50 miles of the Galapagos Islands but sometimes nets drift away and come into protected areas. Eric himself worked on a commercial boat until one day a similar thing happened — he ended up rescuing 14 sea turtles caught in netting. He decided to quit immediately and is currently building a second boat to be used solely for the purpose of rescuing these endangered Galapagos sea animals. The word “legend” gets thrown around too easily these days, but this man truly is one! “How do you capture a place like this?” @edwardpiegza asked me, the photographer, as we caught our first glimpse of the Sierra Negra super volcano crater, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. We were staring at a 360 degree view of the crater that spanned 14kms long. Our @classicjourneys guide, Sebastian (the best in the business, btw), let out a loud whistle. The sound traveled the entire circumference of the crater and came back. Honestly, it's hard to capture a spectacle such as this. You have to experience it in person for the full effect. It's an incredible 10 miles hike from the base to as far as you can walk around the crater before the gases become too poisonous for humans. Oh, and btw, the cork of this champagne bottle erupts every few thousand years and we’re just about due for the next one. Last time a super volcano of these proportions erupted — Indonesia’s Mount Tambora in 1815 -- it resulted in the “Year Without a Summer” due to so much debris in the atmosphere all over the world, so, there’s that to look forward to. Last winter, I traveled to Iceland with @classicjourneys while on assignment for @fathomwaytogo. My article and photos on how to travel this well-trodden country is now up (link in profile). Spoiler alert: Iceland is in my top 5! Always cool to look back on trip photos after some time has passed. I found these photos while surfing the archives that had previously never seen the light of day. In a time when content lasts about .01 seconds before the next whatever thing pops onto your screen, it nice to look back on past trips and cherish the memories. This was a good one! #iceland #classicjourneys #travelwithfathom (at Blue Lagoon Iceland) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8ZFWNYngbQ/?igshid=1x3p2s89nlk0h
As the weather starts heating up in the northern hemisphere, I’m thinking back to long winter road trips a few months ago in Iceland. 💎 #iceland #classicjourneys #travelwithfathom (at Iceland) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByoH2HgHU3f/?igshid=sdi5c4kvt6v3
"Is it okay to drink the tap water at the hotel?" "You can drink the water from the cow feed in Iceland." @atlilydsson 💯 I don't claim to be a tap water aficionado, but it‘s definitely the most delicious water I've tasted. 💦 Last couple of photos from the Iceland trip for now. #bluelagoon #iceland #classicjourneys #travelwithfathom (at Blue Lagoon Iceland) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvP2jL5BDFW/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1l6criqieir1a
