Polar Vortex Is a Big Oof
The University I attend has only cancelled classes 25 times since 1972 (including evening/morning onlys).
I've only been here for 1.5 semesters, and classes have been cancelled 6 times, if I remember correctly 4 of which were full cancellations. And we are about to have another full cancel tommorrow. (Currently only morning classes cancelled now.) We've had about 1-2 cancellations weekly this semester as a result of inclement weather.
I live in Kansas, so its understandable perhaps that the weather is a bit messy. Going from 45°F to -15°F windchill in a day isn't unheard of here. But this is not just Kansas that is acting up more than usual, the entire Earth is flipping out.
As a student I pay for an approximate amount of class time per each course. Some of these courses are once a week onlys, which in itself is okay.
A class I should have had 6 times now Ive only had 2 times. But regardless I still will have forfeited hundreds of dollars by the assumption that classes wouldnt be cancelled 1 or 2 times weekly. (Of course this isnt the main concern of this post, I'm personally just incredibly frustrated I lost hundreds of dollars in addition to the lack of scheduled class time affecting my GPA.)
This polar vortex is changing so many things, far beyond this. This is one of the last signs for a wake up call in climate change. The earth's air currents are changing in ways they shouldnt naturally be doing. And this is because of climate change.
Neither of the poles should be warmer than the Midwest at any given time. That is not normal. This is not just a "bad winter", this is a pattern. We had this in 2014 and it will become the new normal.
