“My grandfather was a mining engineer who spoke ten dialects of Chinese learned for the most part through what he referred to as a sleeping dictionary, in other words a Chinese mistress. He became an explorer for the tin mining companies and would sit down to dinner in the jungle in white tie and tails on  his own. He was a ferocious drinker and a gambler; on one occasion he bet his employees’ wages on his horse and when it was pipped at the post challenged the rival owner to a repeat race for double or quits which fortunately he won.”
from - Spilling the Beans by Clarissa Dickson Wright
Aged 21, Dickson Wright passed her Bar exams to become Britain's youngest barrister. However, this bright start was blighted by the deaths of Clarissa's Mother and Father. Consequently this led Clarissa entered a spiral of depression leading to 12 years of alcoholic abuse and the squandering of her ÂŁ2.8 million inheritance.Â
But after hitting rock bottom Clarissa turned to her first love of cooking. This was to prove an antidote to her compulsive behaviour and a new career path eventually forming what would be a legendary partnership with Jennifer Paterson to become the Two Fat Ladies. Her passion for food was irresistibly contagious, laced with charm and wit. A passage for a duck recipe from The Two Fat Ladies cook book 'Gastronomic Adventures [With Motorbike and Sidecar] reads
"Somewhere out there is a poem the theme of which is that God, fed up with the world he has created, creates the duck and laughs with joy. Much as I like watching ducks, I love eating them better - indeed, it will be on the menu of my last meal if and when they hang me!"Â
Another quote which illustrates this less than ordinary character was on a topic as mundane as butter.
"We have been eating the stuff for at least 2,000 years and if it were killing us in large numbers I think we'd have realised by now: or died out. But we haven't done either”.
Dickson Wright's less than ordinary life did not stop there however. In 2012 when questioned on the culling of badgers, she was infamously quoted saying Britons should eat the badgers which are killed as a result of culling. Which makes me wonder, what would the late Clarissa Dickson Wright's view be on the Billie Badger Felt Slippers?
Her witty remarks and sometimes brutal honesty were what made her stand out from the rest of the crowd as an individual. Whether you admired her or not, there is no denying the world would have been a more ordinary place without her. So hats (or perhaps crash helmets) off to this extraordinary woman.Â
I had never cooked either but if we were to have dinner parties I would have to try and so I discovered my one true talent. All of us have something we can do, some more than others, but everyone has a natural gift; it is just a question of discovering it.
