she was lucky after raccoon city to have an apartment in another town, ready for her move intended for just that next day. she was luckier still that her recovery was so short- shorter than should have been possible by all accounts. but now she’s had nothing to distract her, nothing to cut through the anger she feels towards umbrella or the cold hollowness that overtakes her whenever she thinks about her former home and the people left behind. 

sometimes when she closes her eyes she can still see the blazing expanse of that bomb. 

usually, when she closes her eyes, she sees nemesis and fire. 

but she made sure, as soon as she was settled, to send a message to claire and give her the new address. with chris still gone and everything that happened in raccoon city, jill can only imagine how worried she must be. 

it’s a relief, and maybe the first bit of excitement she feels in so long, to hear back and find that claire is on her way. 

jill prepares the couch for herself and the bed for her guest, tidying up the dirty dishes and scattered papers. she’s even found a way to cover the pin board that looks like madness to anyone but herself. 

the knock on the door makes her spin, breath stopping in her chest. the sound is so light and jovial, but still her mind jumps to scattering brick and a hulking figure reaching out.
