ZITTING CISTICOLA (Cisticola juncidis)
Idre, M. 2014.Ā āCisticole des joncsā France
If youāve been following Zoonomatology for a while, you probably wonāt be surprised to find out that the nameĀ zitting cisticola (or streaked fantail warbler)Ā doesnāt have anything to do with pimples. Itās actually onomatopoeic; referring to the birdās zit, zit, zitĀ call. According to Ray Reedmanās book Lapwings, Loons & Lousy Jacks, ācisticolaā originates from the Greek ākisthosā or ākistosā (meaning rock rose) andĀ ācolaā (dweller) which probably references the birdsā (CisticolaĀ spp.) habitat. Alternatively,Ā ācisti-ā (from ācista') may mean wooden basket (relating to their nests).
