These are from the same Gretel project. This time it's all the different creature concepts that I came up with. First is Chronon a god of time that carries what are known as moments. It appears every so often and when it does, you can get it to drop the moment by presenting it with an offering/sacrifice. I felt that when designing Chronon it was important to consider why it would drop the moment for someone to take. I made it so that Chronon carried it in its first mouth so that when it went to eat the offering/sacrifice it'd be forced to let the moment drop so Chronon could bring out its second mouth. I was obviously influenced by the Xenomorphs from the Alien series but went in a completely different direction with it. Chronon wasn't meant to be scary but otherworldly. For reference I looked at a condor, dear, humming bird, and a bullet ant. I was also influenced by the Chozo and the Luminoth from the Metroid series.
What follows is the process work for making Chronon, it started off as very mechanical but as the rest of the work went more organic so did it. Then there's a sample of my process work for one of the common creatures, minions of the Candy Witch, you'd encounter and fight. I really liked the energy in the sketches for the gummy bear so I decided to post it up. The line up of the creatures are: Gummy Bear, Blow Pop Bat, Jaw Breaker, Frosted Animal Cracker, and Peppermint Root.
The next two are boss monsters that you would encounter. The first is a rock candy monster that likes to stick to the ceiling of its cave and launch a mace like frog tongue at you. The way to beat it is by getting it to fall from the ceiling and land on its back, digging its spikes into the ground holding it there. You attack its stomach and repeat the process a few times until you vanquish it. The second boss is more of a hard shell ice cream than hot fudge......he can launch hot fudge at you! So the way to fight this baddie is by attacking its arms, breaking the shell. The ice cream is too soft to support the rest of it so when it falls over you have to attack the face until you break the shell and cause the ice cream insides to spill out, defeating the evil sundae for good.
Then finally the last one is a mount for Gretel to ride on. So if not obvious at this point, you play as Gretel; Hansel is the damsel in distress. This mount is made of flan and it's based off of a salamander. So I named it Flanamander!
