I love the detail of Cinnabar and Diamond being born the same year. Their relationship in general is really interesting imo.
The hardest and the weakest, one so bright they outshines the sun, graceful and perfect, while the other hides away in the night and poisons everything they touch.
(Both were Partner to Bortz. And while Dia desperately wanted it, Cinnabar was the one who secured Bortz' respect and friendship. Funny how things works out.)
The fact that they have the same age explains a lot about Dia and their hung-ups, actually. Especially the pedestal they tried so hard and failed to live up to. Part of their situation can be attributed to the high expectations that comes with having Diamond class hardness, and part of it comes with being Bortz' senior, partner and shadow, but maybe there's more to it than that.
Maybe they created these high expectations for themselves at a very young age, before Bortz even came into the picture.
why did they do this, you ask? Because they grew up alongside someone who was born with poison leaking off their body, poison that destroys everything around, and no one knew how to deal with it, or why it was happening at all. They saw how it was effecting the other gems, how Cinnabar ended up leaving and how worried Kongo was. how afraid and helpless everyone was.
and what do you do when you sibling is caught in a spotlight for all the wrong reasons? you redirect the spotlight.
