I am so excited that so many people enjoyed the avatar art I shared of npcs for the campaign I am DMing. I got several questions about it and thought I’d answer some of them here all in one place. So, here we go!
1. What system are you using?
I homebrewed this using the 5e system for Dungeons and Dragons, since that is the one I am most familiar with.
So obviously this is set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The campaign I am currently DMing is set 10 years after the Fire Nation massacred the Air Temples during Sozin’s Comet. I thought this would be an interesting time period to play and lead to some wonderful backstories and conflict, and a world without the avatar present is one that definitely is in need of heroes!
3. How do the classes work?
Well, we have the four elements of water, air, fire, and earth. Each of those benders have their own feats and subclasses to choose from (two subclasses for each element other than earth, which has three). Bending techniques take the place of cantrips and spell slots. So you are playing a specialized and hardier spellcaster, in a sense. Certain techniques and abilities are also localized to where the person is from (a waterbender from one of the poles would be hard pressed to move water through plants, while a foggy swamp waterbender would not be used to techniques dealing with ice and snow).
I also built the classes so that players can get creative. While combat is important, the best part about all the bending is seeing how players use their abilities to solve problems throughout the story, and work together to strengthen bending abilities and techniques.
There are also currently three non-bender classes. A weaponstmaster (who is a modified fighter type), a chi blocker (similar to a monk in terms of build), and a yuyan archer (because we all love a useful archer). Obviously you could easily play a non-bending rogue in this setting too, so long as you didn’t use a subclass like arcana trickster that relies on spells.
4. Will you make it available for other people to play?
Right now my current players are guinea pigs for the system. XD I am working out the problems and balance issues, but it seems to be going well and my players are enjoying it.
In the future when I have it all settled I would be more than happy to put it all together for others wanting to run similar campaigns, if the interest is high enough. I have some maps I have made of the major cities, but I don’t think my map making skills are strong enough to add those in to the mix.
The wonderful thing about the world of avatar is that there are so many periods and stories we know very little about, so you can do so much and be really creative with the setting.
I think those were the main questions I received, but if you have any others, feel free to ask! Once again, thank you everyone for the interest!
