La Jetée: The ciné-roman/photo roman
What is expected when a movie is played is a video. The point which I want to point out is that this movie is made of photos. It is an out of the ordinary film and has a characteristic that affects the audience. From my point of view, sometimes it is really hard to understand the subject of the film which is made of videos. However, for this movie even though it is frame by frame with photographs, I get the idea easily. The reason why it is easy for the audience is the techniques that they use.
The fade ins and fade outs are giving the effect of movement so these images are not static images anymore. For instance, in the scene of a woman lying in bed, it was awkward for me to feel her eyes on my face. This is the power of photographs that I understand. Another illustration for movement can be the man with opened eyes and looking at the camera. I can feel the sense of emotion which is the same as a man. The last example can be the first scene of the movie, which was the airport. The technique that they use is like flying in the sky like a plane. They added a movement by zooming the photo. Transferring the emotions with photos is a great success.
The storyteller which I just found out, it called over-voice. It is as effective as the power of the photographs. The tone that over-voice use has equivalent timing with photographs. Sounds are also giving a sense of movement. Like I mentioned before, in the airport scene, the sound of a plane with zooming in, I convinced that it was a video.
To summarize, to understand and feel the story, it doesn’t have to long or include shots of videos. The audience can understand it by photographs which have a story. About this movie, using techniques very efficiently they achieve the movement with the photographs.
