Made in MakerSpace: Batman Bust

Hi my name is Edward. I’m the MakerSpace staff member (MakerSpace Cadet) who made this Batman Bust.This project started with a 3D model downloaded from www.Thingiverse.com

Many of our Library customers print models that other people have uploaded to that site.

I used the program 123D Make to slice that 3D model into layers. I told the software what size my cardboard material was and it gave me a document for use with the MakerSpace’s laser engraver.

I then used the laser engraver to cut each layer of cardboard out. There are about 200 layers.

Once I got all the layers stacked and glued it started looking like Batman. (See first image.)

Then I took it home and kept working on it. I topped his horns with some sculpting clay to help support them. (See second image.)

Then I covered the cardboard bust with spray adhesive and thin foam bandage. (See third image.)

Once he was covered in foam, I started covering him in many layers of painted latex. (See fourth image.)

Once he had a few coats and the color was just right, he was ready to hit the streets of Gotham. (See fifth image.)

The cheesy smile is a sticker. His mouth area is blank so we can change his expression. He’s just really happy to be at the Library.

I’ve also included a photo of the Joker bust I plan on making next. I’m really looking forward to that one. (See last photo.)
