Look what my amazing friend @hangthebastards​ made! She creates custom banners based on games, movies, TV, etc., and I commissioned her to make one based on Eastern Mind: The Lost Souls of Tong Nou and Chuteng. Look at it! It’s so pretty! All the colors and symbols and everything. I’m gonna cry. 😭

Hey, people fluent in Japanese! Want to help with an unusual gaming history project?

For those who haven’t encountered it, Chu-Teng is an exceptionally rare Japanese adventure game. It was only found about two years ago, and there was never an English language release. shutupcarlton​ is working on a community translation of the game from Japanese to English.

If you’re fluent in Japanese and interested in helping, please drop shutupcarlton a line! Chu-Teng is a very odd game that would be great to have available to more audiences.

Today’s Eastern Mind trivia: after the credits, the game presents this screen that either lets you return to the game or quit. But you’ll notice a series of glyphs at the bottom...

Many of these glyphs are the same ones used in the Fire-Tower computer puzzle. They always translate directly to Japanese syllables. But many of the characters only appear in the guidebook – and in the English translation often without any identifiable corresponding sounds.

With some translation work and a little brute force, I think it comes out to “Ton’nou 2 de tsuzuku,” which roughly translates as “To be continued in Eastern Mind 2.”

Despite having curated a catalogue of games that both obfuscated and obliterated the walls of what a game could or should be over the years, Sato himself has expressed the notion that he’s never even been in the business to create games, citing only their use as a vehicle for artistic expression as a motivator for getting involved in the first place.

“I’m not specially interested in making a game or playing it. Games just happened to be one of [one kind of] media for my expression as an artist. For example, the promotional copy for LSD was ‘This isn’t a game.’ So I find my creations are rather contemporary art using game consoles.”
