Is it the familiarity? The fact that most fountain water tastes pretty similar? The fact that you get a little thrill while dispensing it because maybe you could also add a splash of Sprite that you definitely didn’t pay for?

The truth is, fountain water is almost universally just decent. Three-star water at best if the conditions are right and you don’t get existential or start thinking too hard about what’s happening. Fortunately, it is also reliable, familiar and never a risk.

The water at Chunga’s was almost three-star water. It was indeed fountain water and yes, it was familiar (it tasted exactly the same as the water from the fountain in the fifth-floor break room on the north side of the KSL building, which — bonus review! — is three-star water and also the best water available in the KSL building). You know what you’re getting with Chunga’s fountain water; it tastes fine, it will go well with your food and it’s a good temperature.

Unfortunately, Chunga’s water was difficult to access, and, as explained to a group of coworkers over Chunga’s burritos and nachos, reviewing water is all about the entire experience, from the ease of access to the emotions you feel while consuming it. Maybe the fountain was just broken, but at least for now, Chunga’s water earns a solid two-stars. Enjoy Chunga’s water, but just know you have to kind of push the water button on the soda fountain to the left in a confusing way while also pulling it down and you might think it doesn’t work, but it actually does, but then again if you still can’t figure it out, just get like, a soda.
