Meet Chrysilla Volupe a jumping spider native to the Western Ghats region of Kerala, India. These spiders were thought to have been extinct for 150 years and were reported in the media just last year! The spiders in these images are the female of the species which have the flashier colour scheme. Scientists from the Centre for Animal Taxonomy and Ecology (CATE) at Christ College, Irinjalakuda, rediscovered both male and female specimens of this spider from the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (WWS) located in the afore mentioned Western Ghats region of Kerala. “Renowned arachnologist Ferdinand Anton France Karsch of Berlin Zoological Museum, Germany, had described the inventory of a species of spider from Pariej Lake in Gujarat in 1868. But subsequently it had vanished. The spider belonged to the family of jumping spiders (Salticidae) and scientifically named as Chrysilla volupes. Dr. Karsch’s inventory was based only on male specimen.” - TheHindu.com These photos are from 3 sources the first was tweeted by @lynnvanbesien and looks very similar to a photo from @pavan_tavrekere so I presume he gets the credit. The next three are #reposted from @jack_kh.loo and the last is a #repost from @nakulmdev via @PhotoAroundApp who added “Chrysilla volupe is a type of jumping spider that are found in the western ghats. They are about just 8mm in size but have a colorful metallic sheen. These small guys usually make a retreat between green leaves of small plants. This particular guy hoped onto a friend's arm and I happened to get a shot on my phone just in time!” #Chrysilla #JumpingSpider #shotononeplus6 #ChrysillaVolupe #IndianSpiders #ColorfulSpider #WesternGhats #WesternGhatsOfIndia #India #PrideSpider #SpiderPride https://www.instagram.com/p/BzCht6SADKO/?igshid=1nbjcfe4q3iw2
