Now spinning: R.E.M. "Chronic Town" Original 1st press of their debut EP. Before they became one of the biggest bands in the world, they made these songs. Shades of greatness even then. #nowspinning #vinyl #vinyligclub #vinyljunkie #vinylcollection #vinylcollectionpost #vinylcommunity #vinylcommunitypost #vinylporn #recordcollection #rem #chronictown #deathtodigital #digitalsucks #happinessisloudtunes #therevolutionwillnotbedigital

THEY’RE PLAYING OUR SONG
What is the soundtrack of impending apocalypse? Through 2020 I listened, in a loop, on headphones, with kooky teenage fervor, to Chronic Town by R.E.M., music unrelated in any obvious way to the year’s cultural, political and epidemiological crises. It sustained me. This EP, with the band’s first five recorded songs, was released in 1982, as they were building a fan base on college radio, one year before the album Murmur made them critics‘ darlings.
Murmur is organically unified; its very pretty songs, rendered in a quiet, shadowed tone, slip into a single 44-minute stream. Chronic Town is disconnected; each song rushes to start and then somewhat abruptly stops. The audio has fuzz around the edges and worn patches within, as if it had been recorded in a small dark room below ground. What holds everything together is the tempo. The music feel slightly, urgently, speeded. These are songs for someone in a hurry to get on with it, who cannot afford to stop and think about things.
My favorite, Stumble, weaves a galloping, country-ish, ornamental guitar with plangent, thumping drums and bass. Singer Michael Stipe’s suggestive and obtuse lyrics, delivered in his famously slurred voice, skim over the jangling noise. The words themselves are irrelevant; it’s the jittery spirit that engages. This song make my heart race a bit, my body rise. It fits the contours of current anxiety and leaves a bright charge in the air. It carries me right to the edge of hope.

One of my #R.E.M. #treasuredpossessions: 1982 issue of #ChronicTown #EP obviously kept in a protective plastic sleeve. #GardeningAtNight is one of the greatest songs ever written in my opinion and also my favourite on #Reckoning.
