After Nickole Atkinson contacted her friend Shanann Watts on August 13, 2018 and she simply didn't respond, she contacted the police.

Chris Watts said his pregnant wife Shanann and their children Celeste (3) and Bella (4) were gone and he didn't know where either.

When the police arrived at the house there were many inconsistencies: the favorite blankets from the girls were away, Shanann's wedding ring was on her bedsite table, the handbag was in the kitchen, her car with the child seats was still in the garage and Shanann's cell phone was turned off and on the upper floor. The neighbor asked for his help and showed the investigators footage from his house camera. Chris Watts backed his car into the garage at five a.m.

The police made a lie detector test on Watts and evaluated the navigation data from his car. He failed the test and the evaluations showed that he had been on an oil field where he worked. Watts wanted to speak to his father and claimed that Shanann killed the girls after telling her to split up. Later Watts confessed to the murders of his family. He had buried Shanann in a field and dumped the girls in oil tanks. He wanted to start a new life with his affair Nichol Kessinger.
