Well, that’s a fun way to spend a morning!
The weirdest part is, I mean it. I detest grimdark for its own sake, but to take a difficult situation and really dive into it, showing the tragedy of it and the effect it has on people, that’s something else entirely. Everyone one of those characters dealing with the ramifications of re-introducing the death penalty, and not just as a theoretical thing, but as something you, yourself, will have to carry out, it was a glorious well of pain. And then Sam and Becca being cute as fuck in the middle of it, the little ray of sunshine that somehow only deepens the emotional turmoil. Good shit.
Also, I just learned that this show has the same showrunner as Party of Five, and I was like, oh, that explains it! Treating law enforcement as the serious issue it is. Introducing socialism as a positive concept. Playing off Lysistrate without even namedropping it, and portraying teenage girls as the ones who have their shit together. Lots of moments where I go, “They can do this on American television?” and yeah, Christopher Keyser can.
