Song Review: Billy Strings and Christopher Henry - “Midnight on the Stormy Deep” (Live, Feb. 16, 2024)
Billy Strings asked his fans to use their “inside voices” as he and guest Christopher Henry prepared to sing and play into a single mic sans monitors on Bill Monroe and Doc Watson’s “Midnight on the Story Deep.”
The audience (mostly) complied as Henry, on mandolin, played Monroe to guitarist Strings’ Watson. That they didn’t get to rehearse - which Strings/Watson mentioned in his preamble - is evident in the wobbly, but sincere, vocal harmonies.
But Henry/Monroe offers a sublime solo while Strings uncharacteristically punts his as documented on this pro-shot video of the languid bluegrass ballad from Strings’ Feb. 16 gig in North Carolina.
